Members of Menapia SAC had one of those nights last weekend when club anglers just turned up for their competition at the right beach, on the right night, with the right bait. A remarkable night’s fishing saw 65 smoothies landed by club members, as the large packs of hounds in the area hunted down the crab and ragworm baits as soon as they hit the sand. In fact, apart from a single dogfish and one pin whiting, it was hounds all the way as bites came thick and fast for those competing.

The venue was Furlong’s Road, Kilmore Quay, a venue that can fish brilliantly under the right conditions.

Brendan Wall and Sean Carley were head to head throughout the match with Brendan pulling a double shot of decent hounds to pip Sean on the last cast. Third and fourth place was also a head to head between Simon Doyle and Joe Carley with Simon coming out on top by a handful of points.

Top three on the night was

  • Brendan Wall 1059 pts
  • Sean Carley 998 Pts
  • Simon Doyle 856 Pts

Longest fish was Jerry Carbery – 102cm Hound
