Fishing the Galway Weir, June 21 2023

Daithi Ryan reports from the Galway Fishery, where following a closure due to high temperatures, the fishery reopened on the 19th of June. Grilse have been running the river in better numbers every day since. Check out the video below shot at the weir this week.

Daithi reports that since the reopening fishing has been very productive, with 56 salmon landed. The most successful method has been the fly, with 40 caught on the Ffy and 16 caught on the prawn. The most successful fly has been the Haugur, with it accounting for a lot of the fish.

The grilse so far have been good quality with the majority averaging about 5lbs. On the 21st Denis Heffernan landed a stunning fish of 9lbs on the fly and shortly after landed another one of 4lbs, also on fly.

On the 23rd Brendan O’Connor landed an excellent fish of 12.1lbs fresh off the tide also on the fly. On the 28th Ray Drennan landed 2 beautiful grilse within a very short space of time one of 6lbs and the other just over 5lbs.
