Angling guide Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling reports from the Maigue and Deel rivers in Co. Limerick…
Robert O’Meara who fished with me in May’22 is back again and again staying at my local Mustard Seed Country House and Restaurant www.mustardseed.ie with his wife Sue, Rob’s dad hailed from scenic Ballyorgan just under the Ballyhouras, Rob grew up in the UK and is now between homes, from Somerset to Kent to be near the grandkids. Although exclusively a reservoir fly-fisher in the UK, Rob has taken to river fly-fishing well and we had a lovely day on the Maigue yesterday, we finished at Adare, having spent a few hours 6 miles upriver near Banogue.
Now a pretty established trend, our rivers seem to be hitting low summer levels by mid-May, and continuing that way throughout the Summer, climate change no doubt. It means one has to have advanced fly-fishing skills as upstream approach is practically essential for success and not something you lick off a stone. Rob had 5 or 6 fish and many more offers, all released of course. The countryside is especially beautifully just now with Hawthorn in full bloom.
