Skipper Luke Aston was back on the water last weekend to kickstart a busy season, and what a couple of days they had, with blue skies and a calm sea. All they needed was good fishing, and that was available too. Although mackerel were in short supply,

Luke: On Saturday we tried for mackerel around Loop Head but only got 1 and a few coalies. Moving off the fishing picked up as the tide started to fill. Drifts on the reefs were producing plenty of coalfish with a scatter of pollack and some spurdogs. We even got a few strings of mackerel and a fine ling.

Nice pollack
Finally some mackerel!

A drift Sunday morning at the Loop produced no mackerel but a nice mix of pollack and coalfish. Moving out onto the reefs to mix it up a bit, the best of the fish was this ling and spurdog, both over 12 lbs.
A quick stop on the way in did provide 20 or so mackerel and a heap of small coalfish.
Another fine ling

Go fishing…
