Vincent Appleby is back again this week reporting from Lough Currane…

13 February 2025 The anglers were driven off Lough Currane early due to strong southeast winds, with speeds reaching up to 80 km/h and an average speed of 45 km/h. This was accompanied by a significant amount of rain, as evidenced in the attached photograph. Yesterday’s weather included a rainfall total of 1.8 mm, a maximum air temperature of 9.1°C, and no recorded sunshine.

14/2/2025 Calmer waters on Lough Currane on this bright and sunny Valentine’s Day. No Hen Salmon were caught or released, and the same applies to my Noble gentlemen the Salmon. You could say the Lough Currane anglers didn’t have the Valentines Day touch.  The wind was gentle from the South and veered SSW, SSE, SW, S, SSE, SE. Yesterday’s weather included 2.4mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 10.2°C, and no sunshine.

15/2/2025 Just one out manipulating their skills today and I quote www.fishingwithdom.com No joy just the lonesome boatman and his client. Wind variable SSE veered SE followed by good cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 10.7mm, maximum air temperature 13.2c, amount of sunshine 6hr.1minute.

16/2/2023 The Currane anglers had another wild day and in the words of one Currane angler and I quote, Not out too bad, with gusts up to 54km/h average speed 33km/h and overcast all day, followed by heavy rain at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.7mm, maximum air temperature 13.0°C, amount of sunshine 0.1minute.

18/2/2025 The weather conditions at Lough Currane were challenging for anglers. There was a fresh to strong SSE wind with an average speed of 44 km/h to 52 km/h and strong gusts ranging from 65 km/h up to 80 km/h, with an average gust speed of 78 km/h. The sky was overcast throughout the day, accompanied by light misty rain at times. The forecast does not look promising for the rest of the week. Yesterday’s weather included 17.1 mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 12.1°C, and no sunshine.

19/2/2025 On 19 February 2025, the Currane anglers were unable to proceed due to strong, gusty southerly winds, with average speeds of 44 km/h and gusts reaching between 65 km/h and 70 km/h, accompanied by heavy showers. The previous day’s weather recorded 11.4 mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 12.4°C, and 1 hour of sunshine.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks
