REBEL COUNTY SAC fished their 4th match of 2025 at the weekend in Youghal. Shane Olden reports…

FRONT STRAND YOUGHAL
SAT 1ST MARCH – 4PM TO 9PM

The 4th out of 5 comps this side of our break up period at the end of March saw an eager 25 anglers head for the front strand in Youghal. The 1st of March also signalling the start of our 2025 club species hunt which seems to be driving members crazy and putting a great buzz across the club once again.

On arrival we had a 3.9m tide with fresh to moderate south westerly winds that were due to decrease as the night went on. Though a welcomed break from the previous easterlies it was like a summers day, something we seem to see very little of these days even at summer time. All in all it was a glorious day with overly comfortable conditions, something the REBEL’S were long over due after battling tough conditions over the winter months to stay on the fish.

First on the fish was a very close call with Radivoj Martinovic landing a thornback ray to open the clubs account. Very close to that fish was Petar Mandić with another thornback but of bigger size. Next in sequence was Vladimirs Nosovs with a rockling to keep him in the running. As things were starting to liven up I was next, between duties and taking photos, with my first thorn back ray that I had ever caught from the venue. Fish were slowly but surely starting to show across the line and the lads were looking busy. Our lady angler Edwina Anne decided to scratch away at the rockling in day light hours producing 2 rockling on her new investment in a Yuki rod and showed well before switching to the bigger fish.

Coming into darkness the numbers of Ray being caught got the excitement going as lads were only to happy to be getting photos of fish on their 2025 species hunt cards to get the ball rolling on that end of things. On the high number pegs Noah Tahran opened his account with a double shot of a flounder and a dog fish. To his left our Dublin angler CHRIS GREENE was starting to show strength, gather pace and put to use what he learned in the last few outings and it was inevitable he was going to give the lads a good run on this outing. Also getting in on the last of the day time ray were JOHN O MAHONY and STEPHEN (WEATHER WATT ) WATKINS.

With the darkness finally upon us the numbers of dog fish increased and the thorn back ray were replaced with painted ray. And again a welcomed species for our species hunters with the odd whiting in the mix also. Martin O’Hare had an unlucky few hours failing to connect with about 10 fish that just would commit enough to his bait, but Martin soon turned the tides and was producing a ray and a dog fish on most casts for what was left of the competition. Out on the front line and battling hard were Noah TAHRAN, Martin O’Hare, Chris Greene and Kieran Ryan, Who was it going to be…

It was a great effort by all anglers and though fishing was slow they produced fish to their cards very well  All new members a juveniles to the club have already come a long way and the competitive streak is well bedded in, especially our Dublin angler CHRIS Greene who travels by train and hasn’t missed a competition since joining. Our next competition is planned for Gary Lucas beach but could be subject to venue change which will bring us up to our annual break for the summer which also gives our anglers a chance to scatter all over Ireland chasing species and specimens for our club species hunt. So we are never on a break as such the REBEL’S always keep busy.

As always we can be contacted through the usual ways for those wishing to get their names on our waiting list to join our club. We’d like to thank our friends, followers and sponsors who are also a big part of the family. Also an upcoming report on our species hunt and sponsors so watch this space.
