fter several miserable weeks of wind and rain, members travelling to the club’s annual away-day match in Arklow were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a scorching Saturday afternoon. Some were so eager that they arrived at the venue three and a half hours early, while the usual good-natured banter was in full flow as anglers gathered for the 3pm meet-up.
Unfortunately, three members travelling together broke down in Swords and were unable to make the match. Thankfully, everyone got home safely, although the much-anticipated cream buns never made it to Arklow.
On the beach, Yuki pegged the match to the left-hand side of the slip before the draw was made and anglers headed to their pegs. Conditions could hardly have been better, with temperatures in the 20s and leads hitting the horizon at 4.30pm.
In Zone A, Gavin Mahaffy opened the scoring with a dogfish, while Stephen Kinning soon followed with a smoothhound, the target species for many. In Zone B, Craig Henderson enjoyed back-to-back dogfish on his first two casts, while Tommy Carnegie landed a dogfish and an 86cm hound. Fra Mahoney also added a dogfish and the longest fish of the night, an impressive 89cm smoothhound.
Although fish did not appear in large numbers, anglers recorded a good variety of species including dogfish, smoothhound, tope, whiting, flounder, dabs and tub gurnard. Last-cast action saw several fish landed, including a crucial dogfish for Tommy Carnegie which secured his zone win.
Zone A was won by Stephen Kinning with seven fish for 357 points, while Tommy Carnegie topped Zone B with three fish for 191 points.
