Campaigners Fear ‘Back Door’ Salmon Farming Via Galway Bay Test Site, Afloat
Could proposals for the Galway Bay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site provide a back door for fish farming in the bay? That’s the concern of local campaigners after a Statutory Instrument was enacted earlier this month that changes the licensing laws for salmon farming for research purposes, as the Connacht Tribune reports. The new law allows for salmon farms under 50 tonnes to operate without an Environmental Impact Assessment… Afloat, 25/09/16. Fisherman threatens to sue OPW over ‘destroyed’ fishing pool, The Mayo News
A CORK fisherman is threatening to sue the Office of Public Works, claiming it destroyed a fishing pool adjacent to his property on the River Moy. Tim O’Mahony claims that work the OPW carried out on the river last year resulted in 300 tonnes of silt running back into the river and destroying the pool, known as Howley’s Pool located on the River Moy between Swinford and Foxford. The Cork resident owns a fishing lodge beside the pool, which he hires out to anglers. Claiming it is now unsafe to fish along the river bank, he says his business has suffered as a result… The Mayo News, 20/09/16. The Grand Canal at Daingean turned up some nice fish for the event
Atrocious weather conditions made for hard and uncomfortable fishing for the Senior Inter-Provincial Championships this weekend on the Grand Canal at Daingean. Congratulations to Leinster who managed to take the victory by a tight margin from Connacht by 2 points.
The Inter-Pro’s as normal proved a great weekend with the teams from the provinces getting together. Thanks to Castle Barna for their hospitality.

Irish Boat ‘Screaming Reels’ from Cork Wins Rosslare Small Boats Festival for Eighth Time, Afloat
The Irish boat ‘Screaming Reels’ has won the Rosslare Small Boats Angling Festival for a record eighth year in what was a very tight competition. This is the sixth year in a row that the crew from Rosie’s Sea Angling Club from Midleton in Cork, who first started fishing the competition in 2008, has won. They beat 43 other boats from Britain and Ireland catching 30 different species of fish for 28.03 kilos…. Afloat, 22/09/16. A night of heavy rain filled the rocky basins of Nadirkmore and Dirkbeg lakes and sent an overflow spilling into the Owenbrin to transform that merry stream into a maelstrom that roared down the long hill and into Lough Mask. At its height the flood was yellow-brown and turgid, swirling thick over the bare boulders that form its course. We heard it roaring from a distance and, as we drew close, felt the very ground thrum beneath our feet. Even the hills poured with water. Miniature streams could be seen all along the rocky peaks, as fine white threads peeking through a torn blanket of cloud… The Mayo News, 20/09/16. Leave the boat in the car park when you're finished...
David McEvoy reports from Delphi where September storms are making an impact on the fihsing…
23 September: As is often the case here in September we tend to get the tail end of the hurricanes that sweep through the east coast of Northern and Central America. This year has been no different and we experienced one very bad storm with severe rain on the night of the 11th and morning of the 12th. We had 81.1mms (3.19”) for the 24 hour period but almost all of this fell in about eight hours during the night and early morning. The river was actually over the top of the gauge which goes to 120cms. Roads were impassable by car and some who tried found it a costly experience.

On a positive note the salmon fishing picked up but sea trout seemed to be slower probably as a result of the huge flood, with Glencullin being unfishable for at least a week afterwards. Nineteen salmon have been landed since my last update and some nice sea trout but they were not as good as before the flood.
Roads were impassable following the worst of the rain
There were two salmon landed on the 5th with Rollin Schuster from the USA landing a fish of approx. 2.5lbs on a Mini Tube in the Meadow Pool. This was followed later in the day by Peter Eaton who had a fish of 3lbs3ozs from the Dynamite on a Yellow Shrimp. Tommy Lee had a fish the following day from the Stream on Finlough of approx. 4.5lbs on a Cascade.
On the 8th it was the turn of Chris Barry from Sydney who landed two fish, one of 9lbs14ozs and the second of approx. 3.5lbs, both from the Turn Pool and both on Willie Gunn’s.
Salmon
The following week we had some who specialised in salmon and others in sea trout. Mark Corps landed three for the week of 3lbs 14ozs, 5lbs and approx. 5lbs, the first two being from the Whin and the third from the Rock Pool on a Collie Dog, Beaded Nymph and a Golden Reach respectively. Alexander Mills had a fish of 2lbs11ozs from the Whin on a Yellow Shrimp. Philip Janaway had two of 4lbs and approx. 3 lbs, from the Grilse Pool and the Horseshoe Pool, both on a Cascade. Chris Cromey Hawke had two, one off the Deadman’s of 3lbs9ozs on a Sunrae and the second of 9lbs11ozs off Finlough also on a Sunrae.
Jack Browne was the main salmon catcher this week, with four landed, three on Doolough and one on Glencullin of 3lbs2ozs, 11lbs8ozs, approx. 3lbs and approx. 4lbs, the first on a Stoats Tail and the remainder on a Willie Gunn. David Swaine also had afish of approx. 2.5lbs from the Meadow Pool on a Silver Wilkinson. Rob Broke also managed to land his first ever salmon, a fish of 3lbs8ozs from the Quarry Pool on a Beaded Nymph.
We’re down to the last week now so hopefully we’ll put a few more fish in the book before the end of the month, if the weather allows as we are experiencing another good September Storm at the minute.
At Delphi Lodge, with many years of experience with the timing of the best runs of fish, we have in place a price system that offers both great value fishing and lets our anglers know when they have the best chance to catch a fresh run spring salmon or a summer grilse or Delphi sea trout.
Three anglers have been given safety advice by the coastguard after their small motor boat was swamped by heavy seas and began sinking. The three men had been fishing off Ramore Head in County Antrim, Northern Ireland when their vessel suffered mechanical failure. As of Monday 26th September the Laune is gone up to 1.8m over the weekend. This is the last thing we needed. Only one fish reported for the week and certainly no sign of fresh fish. Tom Curtyane’s salmon was a nice fish of 10 lbs spinning and Patrick Richard and Bernard Lyot also spinning had some good sea trout to 3lbs before the water rose. The other 157 members blanked.
Nothing to add.
Prospects: Poor in ideal conditions and high water levels to contend with for remaining five days.
Billy Downes, Secretary Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association
