Moy salmon anglers put down a quiet week

The Moy system accounted for a reported catch of just 181 salmon for the week. With varying water levels fishing conditions remained difficult for most of the week, while overall angling effort was well down.

Most fisheries saw a rather quiet week with fewer fish caught than previously. On Cloongee, William Hanna from Northern Ireland had 3 small grilse on spinner, while his countryman, Harry Clarke, had one also on spinner. Norwegian visitor, Bjorn Kringstad caught a small grilse on the East Mayo water. Also on East Mayo, Mark Fennelly, Carlow, had a 5.5 lbs. fish. Both fish were caught spinning.

Mixed reports from Mask as Trout focus on Daphnia

Ronan Cusack has mixed reports from Mask this week as anglers continue to hunt the deeps in pursuit of daphnia-feeding trout…

Peter Byrne of Lough Carra Anglers organized the annual catch-and-release competition on Carra/Mask on Sunday last in aid of the Water Protection Group. This is the 10th anniversary of the competition and had a good turnout of anglers despite Mayo being in the All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park that day. On the day 46 anglers fished and 89 trout were recorded. The competition was run to a 30cm limit, which 54 trout exceeded. Philip Clesham from Castlebar came out on top with an overall length of 241cm. Philip also had the longest fish on the day which measured 56cm. Using the World cup conversion chart Philips fish would convert to over 4lbs.

Ray Broughton and Kevin Beattie from Ballinrobe fished the deep on Tuesday of this week and they reported plenty of action. The lads finished with 5 good keepers and numerous undersize (best fish 1.75lbs). Richie Cameron had 1 fish on wets on Saturday last in very rough conditions. Danny Joyce from Ballinrobe had 2 on Sunday and a further 3 on Tuesday, all on wet flies from the deep (best fish 1.5lbs).

Heavy rain over the past week has raised water levels on Lough Mask significantly. Any anglers who may not have seen their boat recently may be advised to do so.

Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling has a tale of first time success on the Royal Canal…

Last week Ray McIntyre took his young neice and nephew Sean and Rachel Daly for their first angling trip on the Royal Canal. Rachel was very keen to catch her first perch from the Royal Canal. With a bit of guidance from her Uncle Ray and encouragement from Sean, Rachel made short work of connecting with here first perch.

Return to Derravaragh – pike live up to expectations

The O'Shea boys from Budapest
The O'Shea boys from Budapest

Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling reports on a recent pike trip to Lough Derravaragh…

IT’S A LONG WAY FROM TIPPARY TO BUDAPEST….  Last week John O’Shea, contacted me. John is originally from Tipperary but now living in Budapest these twelve years. John as a keen, young pike angler spent many days on Derravaragh, Lough Iron, and along the banks of the river Inny.

The O'Shea boys from Budapest

On this trip home he had his young son Sean on board, and Sean having heard all the stories about the Midlands and Derravaragh was very excited to fish the lakes his day talked so much about. The O’Shea Boys stay over in Kerrigan’s in Harbour Street, and the date was set for our angling adventure. On arriving on the shores of Derravaragh John could not believe how clear the water was, as in his day it was always a bit cloudy. I explained the Zebra Mussels had arrived in recent years on a lot of our lakes and they have being responsible for filtering our water clear.

Pike in flight

The plan on the pike scene was a bit of trolling and maybe a few hours spinning, as Sean was only 12 years old, and the day we fished it was scorching hot. Soon enough we were into a few hard fighting pike, and I got some great pics of the boys playing fish with young Sean in the thick of the action. I am sure you will see the lads back in Mullingar when home on holidays in the near future.

40 salmon from Ilen last week

Eileen Carroll gives a round up of the salmon fishing in West Cork…

RIVER ILEN

40 salmon landed for the week on the River Ilen, all grilse, mostly on worm.  Best, sea trout 3lb by Eickhard Wagner on a fly.

RIVER MEALAGH

No report.

OUVANE RIVER

10 fish reported for the week on the Ouvane.

COOMHOLA RIVER

12 fish reported for the week on the Coomhola.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Great weights at Ned O'Farrell canal match at Daingean

Julian Kendrick
Julian Kendrick

The Daingean stretches of the grand canal once again produced some great weights for this annual memorial match run by Prosperous Angling Club. This is a 2 Day event and heavy rain and strong winds made day one a lot harder than normal with 5kg winning the day. Day two was fine and  overcast and produced the goods for the winners with several double figure weights coming from three different sections. The Millenium section gave Brian Kane the day win with 12 kg whilst Julian Kendrick took second place from the bumpy road section with 10 kg.

Barrow clear on day 1 of Bonanza, up 2 feet on day 2

Mick O'Connor
Mick O'Connor

NADA PRO Eddie Long reports on the Waterways Ireland Barrow Bonanza…

Naas and District Anglers held its second annual Barrow Bonanza match in Carlow over the weekend.  Murph’s fishing tackle provided fresh quality bait to our anglers and the IADA provided a dipping station – no dip no draw. We don’t want the spread of invasive species in our waterways! Over 40 anglers were registered and after the draw the anglers headed to the Day 1 venues – Knockbeg and Maganey.

The weather on Saturday morning was scattered showers and some wind but like the previous year we didn’t get much rain on the days leading up to the match. The river wasn’t flowing well and was very clear so again it was going to be a tough match. We had loads of time to prepare our gear for the match and at 12pm on the button we called the all in. I knew this was going to be tough but I had no idea just how tough it was to be. I cupped in four balls of groundbait laced with caster at 11.5m and also catapulted some nuggets of groundbait on my waggler line. I tried holding back on the pole line and running though and nothing seemed to work. Again on the waggler line, cast after cast after cast produced little or no bites. At the halfway point I think I had only three fish so I decided to go for a walk up to my right and see if anyone was catching. I think the most anyone had up that way was around 30 fish but most had just a few fish and even some very experienced anglers had nothing at all. I decided to return to my peg and give it another bash but nothing I did produced anything of worth. At the all out at 5pm I had only managed a measly six fish  and so I set off to begin the weigh in at peg 1.

Day 2

On Sunday conditions seemed a little better and the river had risen by two feet but was the fishing going to improve, only time would tell! Again everyone met up in Toughers for breakfast and the draw. Sunday’s match was to be held on two different stretches – Leighlin Bridge and Milford in Carlow. Again after the draw had taken place we left in convoys to our drawn stretch, I was heading for Leighlin Bridge. The river looked very promising, good flow, nice colour and deep and along with the overcast but warm conditions we were sure to see some decent nets of fish caught here, or so I thought!

Brendan O'Malley
Brendan O’Malley

Again I fished a pole line at 11.5m and cupped in 4-5 balls of groundbait laced with caster and also catapulted some nuggets across the river toward the far side for my waggler line. Again nothing I did, neither holding back or running through produce any fish on my pole line and I managed to winkle out three fish on the waggler but that was it. At the halfway point I lost the will and so left my peg to see how the lads were doing to my right. Of course I had an ulterior motive to head to my right, there was a shop on the bridge and I fancied an ice cream.

Anyway, on my way down I found out that most had very few fish and only the last two pegs were really producing, so I set off to the shop and returned with Cornettos in hand. I dealt out the Cornettos and set off back to my peg to give it one last bash but to no avail. Nothing I did produced anything fish and so with about 45 minutes to go I decided I’d had enough and packed up so as to be able to help out with the weigh in. At 5pm the all out was called and we set off to peg one by the weir where Conor Browne set the benchmark weight of 5.100kgs on a top 5 rig which no other angler on the way down towards the bridge could come close to. Ollie Doyle, Paul McLoughlin and Bowbie O’Connor all had 2kg+ but nobody else really had anything to contend with peg one.

Again like last year rumours began to circulate, the guys fishing the Milford stretch apparently had bagged up all day but we’d have to wait till our return to Toughers to get the final weights totted up!

We really hope you all enjoyed the fishing, it was very tough going but that’s river fishing, you can never predict how it’s going to be! Thank you all very much for fishing our match and we hope to see you next year.

Before I finish up I’d like to thank a few people.
Murphs fishing tackle for the bait.
Toughers Carlow for looking after us with the venue for the draw.
The IADA for the dipping station and disinfectant.
Big thanks to Waterways Ireland for the sponsorship and the help with clearing swims.
Thank you to Billy O Neill for all his help over the weekend.
A big thanks to Ollie Doyle for his Trojan help clearing swims from his boat and raking pegs.
Thanks to Owen Lynch who helped myself and Paul with peg cleanups.
Thanks to Padraig O Riordan, Trev Campbell and Aussie Conway for your help with the registration, pools and the peg draw!
And finally to Paul McLoughlin who put in a phenomenal amount of work into this event. From sending out Barrow Bonanza info packs and bait order forms, to procurement of the sponsorship. Paul spent many long days and evenings clearing pegs and hammering in peg numbers for this match and with twice the amount of swims this time round I can tell you there was a savage amount of work to be done and most of it was carried out by Paul on his own, down the banks of the Barrow. He hadn’t even time to prepare any rigs, hook lengths or ready his rods for the match. I know this because I was working with him the Friday night before the match.
Paul, you’re an absolute star and the driving force behind the Naas and District Anglers club.
We really appreciate all you do for the club and were it not for you this club would cease to exist. We can’t thank you enough for all that you do for the club but hats off to you lad, your an absolute legend 😉

Thanks to you all

Difficult conditions on Currane followed by flood

Guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where it has been slow going for salmon and sea trout anglers…

17/8/16  Straight to the Sea Trout fly department. Northern Ireland angler, Mr. Guy Hollis, caught a fine 2 ½ lbs. Sea Trout on the drift while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Staying with the Sea Trout, Cork angler Mr. Tom Murphy gives his fly fishing report and I quote, “fished last evening and today for one small juniors and a few brownies. There was another boat out early morning for two small juniors and a few brownies”. Wind North light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover and very humid.

18/8/16 The fly takes  all the headlines on Lough Currane and on Lough Derriana. We start on the Big Lake/Lough Currane, UK Angler Mr. Garry Kirby while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 2 nice Sea Trout on the drift. Now we head up the Commeragh River and Lough Derriana where Scottish Angler Morag MacLean from Aberdeen, fishing with her Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught two fine Sea Trout both in the 1 ½ lbs. class. Her Dad looked on with satisfaction as she manipulated her flies to perfection. Wind SE fresh with good cloud cover and heavy rain this evening.

19/8/16 There was a strong SW wind blowing down the lake which made fishing difficult. This didn’t deter a few anglers with their Gillie’s heading out, so we start in the fly department. UK angler Mr. Phil Staniforth, caught a fine Grilse, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com. Now we head for the trolling department, Mr. Guy Hollis, caught a fine Salmon/Grilse of 4 ½ lbs. while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and for the rest of the angling community there is no criticism this day, reason being My Noble Anglers have a good excuse! I have spoken.

20/8/16 Kerry had a yellow alert today but yellow alert or not this didn’t deter a few anglers venturing out and there is one angler, glad that he did and that was Northern Angler Mr. John McGee, who, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com, caught a fine 3 lbs. Grilse/Salmon on the troll in a strong and wild NW wind with heavy showers. The rest of the anglers they either failed in all departments or they had their fine day fisherman’s hat on. Wind as already stated, amount of rain fall yesterday 11 mm.

21/8/16 Sadly the weather takes all the headlines as my noble Anglers headed out for their days manipulations on Lough Currane and Lough Namona, all you can say their boats were lighter this evening as they burnt their fuel and ate their lunch baskets empty and hoping to find that elusive fish, be it on the fly or the troll. Now for their excuse for failing miserably in their duties, in the words of local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Wind SW mad, on Lough Namona, local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea ofwww.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com reported much of the same in all departments. Staying with the weather, its made a good flood so all eyes will be on the river front tomorrow be it the World famous Butler Pool of www.watervillegolflinks.ie the Mouth of the Commeragh, the Commeragh River and last but not least the great River Inny so let the fly and Spin take the headlines tomorrow.

22/8/16 The Lough Currane wild Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout were in a subdued mood today and that’s not surprising with filthy water coming down the Capal and the Commeragh River, it’s a good job we Lake anglers always have a good excuse! On the River Inny front all quiet on the western front and the only conclusion I can come to is, that Limousine  Bull must have been on duty on both banks of the River Inny, need I say more. Wind W light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 17.7 mm.

23/8/16 As you all know that Lough Currane is on the rise and as you well know that doesn’t make for good fishing and with another 11.9 mm rain fall yesterday, it will take two or three days to settle down. On the River front again my Noble anglers are either still scared of the that Mighty Bull or their keeping their catches to themselves, on that note we head for the Waterville Inn and I would like to on behalf of all the anglers and good people of Waterville, wish the Landlord Mr. Damian Duff a speedy recovery. Wind next to nothing with bright sunshine all day.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
