Tonk fishing in front of the the ruined Desmond Castle
Tonk Fischer and son-in-law Bryan Kazmar along with other family members are staying at the picturesque Gate Lodge thatched cottage in Adare village. Being so close to the river they decided a day on the water was called for…
Tonk is an avid flyman back home in Oregon, USA, and Bryan is a keen rookie. I had flagged the poor prospects with Tonk, especially the low water, but he was having none of it, wanting to do the full day anyhow. Our day began at Ballyallinan Tonk had never fished anywhere like it. The river Deel here challenges the best, wild riverbanks, weeded river and easily-spooked wild browns, many find it difficult enough just getting into the water. I left Tonk to fend for himself fishing under a field of 80 or so heifers… and an understanably protective bull who would later introduce himself in person! Tonk had some rises to his dry BWO but alas did not connect.

We adjourned for a packed lunch and headed back to Adare for the final hour of the ebbing tide, here I continued to help Bryan with his casting whilst Tonk went wandering again. Both had many small fish including Bream on the fly, delightful company both,

George Handley with his 8lb fish off the castle beat in these challenging conditions.
It was tough going for George Handley and his party last week at Fort William on the Munster Blackwater they but managed to land 5 salmon, keeping just one.

Steve Earl from the U.K also had 4 fish for his week also keeping one fish. James Cerklin and his family had a cracking few days with 4 fish with 2 on fly. James also had a great evening at the sea trout landing 10 from half pound to 3lbs all released.
Go fishing…
Flowing through Cork and Waterford, in the south east of Ireland, the river Blackwater is most famous for it’s salmon fishing. Fort William Fishery has 5 beats on the river, which include stretches particularly suited to flyfishing. Our beats offer a wide variety of water, suitable for both beginners and the more experienced fishermen. In summer we have also good numbers of sea trout. On the estate there is two self-catering cottages and tackle/freezer room. Whether you like fishing for salmon or fly fishing for sea trout, Fort William will meet all your game angling requirements and much more.

Richies biggest bass from his boat, Seahawk, 11.3lb
Richie Ryan tells us that there are still good reports of bass fishing in Cork Harbour. Whilst the easterly winds have made life difficult, a small window of opportunity arises each day for a cast. Wind against tide makes life difficult, reports Richie, but a short session is better than none…
And so it was this week that the Eire Bass guide set out to research fishing for some more tagging next week. Fishing a large surface lure Richie noticed a large amount of very small mackerel chasing the 128 mm Ilex lure. He even managed to hook one! A small bass of about 3 lbs was landed and released, another lost.

Shortly after this there was a large smash beside his bait and he stopped the lure dead. Before Richie started to retrieve the Lure the bass took it. What followed was a frenetic fight for close on 20 mins. Adrenalin was pumping with the fear of loosing such a large bass, not to mind the damage a lost lure would cause to this marvellous fish. Net in position, the fish was quickly measured and weighed. 11.3 lbs and 83 cm and a large smile of course !
As Richie was on his own the picture was hastily taken on the deck of the boat.
However this YouTube clip gives some indication of the size of this bass :
The future of Lanesboro’s fishing industrycould be dealt a potentially crushing blow if latest tests show traces of invasive clams in Lough Ree.
Those were the sobering words from Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) chief executive Dr Ciaran Byrne this week following their discovery along the region’s so-called ‘hotwater’ stretch last Thursday.
Dr Byrne confirmed samples had been taken from the bed of Lough Ree in the days since by specialist teams to determine whether the invasive species had spread….
Something interesting has happened out west. For the best part of two years Bord Iascaigh Mhara has been trying to reboot the the Irish salmon farming industry. The plan centres around very large farms, with one planned for Galway Bay and another earmarked for Inishturk off Co Mayo. The projects have met opposition from various interest groups who have joined forces in Galway Bay Against Salmon Cages… Irish Times, 15/09/14. Close to €500m of EU funds spent on fish farms was largely wasted, according to a report highly critical of the sector. It warned that money was handed out without proper environmental and health issues being taken into account — at a time when production in countries like Ireland was experiencing a decline in salmon stocks because of disease. The report by the EU Court of Auditors said that, in future, EU money should go only to countries where proper national strategies are in place… Irish Examiner, 17/09/14. OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 8th to Sunday 14th September 2014.
The week was very dry once again and we received no rainfall at all. The river ran at very low summer levels as the poor gauge average of 0.08 metres testifies to! Only 2 visiting rods fished for the week and I have no reports of any fish caught We are still praying for rain!
LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 8th to Sunday 14th September 2014.
Lough Melvin remained very low with no rainfall to freshen things up. Trout fishing was variable with some rods reporting fair fishing for Sonaghan and Gillaroo and other rods reporting the fishing being tough in light winds and very bright weather. Sunday gave nice conditions being overcast with a nice breeze. Luckily, this was the day that the Seamus O’Doherty Memorial Cup Pairs Competition was held out of Garrison. There was a good turn out on the day with 47 boats fishing. The competition was won by Dermot Brewster & Barry Maguire with 6 fish. In second place were father & son team, Sean & Darren Maguire with 5 fish and in third place were Greg White & Gary Stewart with 5 fish.
