Works on new bridge in Kilkenny city remains suspended until Monday when Judge will make final decision on interim injunction, Kilkenny People

Work on a new bridges over the River Nore, under Greensbridge in Kilkenny city, as part of the Central Access Scheme (CAS), remains suspended. Yesterday in the High Court, Kilkenny County Council gave evidence rejecting concerns raised over the future of a rare and minute mussel found in the upper reaches of the river. Following the evidence, Ms Justice Marie Baker deferred any decision on lifting the interim injunction in place and said she would make a decision on whether or not to remove it on Monday…

Traffic impact still key issue in Cork port expansion, Irish Examiner

The Port of Cork may have to sign a legal agreement compelling it to use a special traffic management system if its €100m Ringaskiddy expansion gets the green light. Senior Cork County Council planner Paul Murphy told Bord Pleanála inspectors yesterday it should consider including the clause given that traffic impact on the N28 was the key issue when the port’s 2008 expansion plan was rejected…

Asian Clam invasion prompts Longford angling ban, The Journal.ie

INLAND FISHERIES IRELAND today announced an immediate ban on angling at the “hotwater” stretch at Lanesborough, Co Longford after the discovery of the invasive Asian Clam there. In a statement this afternoon, Inland Fisheries warned:

Anglers must be aware of the dangers posed to other waters.
Asian clam can spread on fishing equipment such as keep nets, landing nets, boats, rods and clothing.
A decision has been made to close this section of the fishery as a temporary measure to avoid the accidental spread of Asian Clam to other waters.

After bio-security measures, including disinfection for angling equipment, the stretch of water will reopen “at the earliest opportunity”, the statement added….

Salmon Fishing Improves on the River Boyne

Peter Cunningham Releasing a Salmon Back to the Boyne During the Week

Water levels have been dropping over the last couple of weeks on the River Boyne but despite the difficult conditions a number of fish have been reported taken. Peter Cunningham has had a few fish on the Rossin, Slane and District Angling Club waters and produced a lovely 14lb salmon for French angler David Chaignon, from Normandy. Fishing has been tough but with two weeks left before the end of the season Peter is hopeful that the salmon fishing will continue to improve.

Another Pike 1m+ for Pierre on Lough Derg

Pierre Monjarret with a 104cm Pike from Lough Derg Last Weekend

The hot bright sunny weather has not helped pike anglers over the last week but despite the tough conditions Pierre Monjarret has continued with run of great fish over 1m. Fishing on Lough Derg in very difficult conditions Pierre hooked and boated a beautiful 104cm fish on lure last weekend. After a good fight the fish was carefully released back to Lough Derg to fight another day. Pierre has been producing some great fish all season and now with his new boat he can cover even more water more quickly. We look forward to future reports from Lough Derg guides Pierre, TJ O’Brien and Jean Louis Bigot.

Day 4 of the World Pairs sees Rob and Adam still in the lead

Mirror-like lake surfaces look good but can make the fishing very difficult. Experienced Irish festival regular, Rod Scott, drawn end peg 1 at Church Shore on Garadice Lake knew that a positive feeder-only attack would give the best chance of a weight.
Casting past 50m, the Northwich tackle dealer kept hybrids coming steadily all day before a burst of better fish in the last half an hour sealed the lake win with 20.180kgs.
Rod and partner Michael Buchwalder have moved into 5th place going into the last day. Tomorrow one of them will be at Killadeas, where the fishing has got stronger as the week has gone on.
While Rod Scott was storming to the lake win, over on the other end peg, 14, David Herron was quietly plugging away on the feeder as well. His 17.280kgs contained a lot of small fish, but he also got amongst the better hybrids.
The Co. Tyrone rod used double red maggot on the hook and got through 2 pints of casters and 3/4kg of chopped worm. A recent convert to window feeders, he used a 20g model to pick off his fish.
Daiwa Cup front-runner Adam Wakelin drew Lough Scur peg 13, a peg that had not produced massive weights all week. He fished a sensible match for small roach, perch and hybrids on the pole to keep his nose in front with 14kgs.
