Eleven into thirteen goes well for Delphi anglers

David McEvoy reports from Delphi this week:

Our first week in June was not bad at all, with thirteen fish landed in total. Probably the most amazing element was that these were caught by eleven anglers, which it must be said was a very fair distribution which is not always the case!

Martin Ceillier was the man on the 1st of June, with two fish off Doolough. The first weighed in at approx. 5lbs and the second at 8lbs7ozs.

Not to be outdone by her husband, Barbara managed to claw back some ground when she landed a beautiful fish of 5lbs13ozs on one of her own Willie Gunn needle tubes on the 2nd. The fish was taken in the Rock pool. Manfred Wolf also had a fine fish from Sligo Bay on Finlough. The fish was taken on a Delphi Collie and was a conservative 13lbs.Created with Nokia Smart Cam

Created with Nokia Smart CamThe 3rd saw two more landed. David Walmsley had the first of approx. 7lbs from the Rock pool on a Willie Gunn. The second was taken by Charles Finch, also in the Rock pool and weighed in at 5lbs8ozs. It was taken on a Delphi Collie and was Charles first ever salmon.

We drew a blank on the 4th and then had six on the 5th. Manfred Wolf was first off the mark with a nice fish of approx. 7lbs from the Quarry pool on a Willie Gunn. Fred Eberle had one of 6lbs11ozs from the Rock pool on a Cascade. Bill Middleton had a good fish of 10lbs2ozs from Salmon City on Finlough on a Delphi Collie. Lukus Steinmann had his first ever salmon from the Boat Point on Finlough on a Cascade. The fish weighed in at 4lbs3ozs. David Rainford had a fish of 8lbs from the Turn pool on a Cascade. Finally Anabelle Tomes managed to land her first ever salmon. The fish was taken in the Bridge pool on a Red Francis and was approx. 5lbs.

Delphi - June 2014 2There were quite a few fish seen and risen on Friday, with Ian Carroll the only one who managed to land a fish. It was a cracking fish weighing in at 12lbs was taken on the Turn pool on a Jack Power Special (not the Whiskey)

Yesterday I was expecting great things as we had some crack anglers but I’m afraid they failed miserably. The day was extremely thundery with some heavy showers and thunder and lightening also, was I suppose some form of excuse!!

We are still waiting for our first fish of the day, which we will see hopefully before the close of play. The river is running at about 23, which is a shade low but there are still fish entering the system so hopefully we will see a few of them landed in the next week.

First grilse make an appearance at Kylemore

Nigel Rush reports that a couple of grilse have been caught at Kylemore but more water is needed to see a real run of fish…

A wet day on Friday gave the river a small lift and the first Grilse of 3.25lb was caught at Derryinver Bridge Pool by Thomas Henry visiting from Scotland.

A further three grilse of 4lb were also landed on Saturday morning. One in Upper and Lower Eugenes on the Upper River by Seamus O’Neil and a fish of similar size to myself from the Rock Pool.

We are going to need some of this promised rain to keep angling momentum up.

Hidden away between the mountains of Connemara and the Atlantic ocean, the Kylemore Abbey fishery is a wild and beautiful place. Kylemore Abbey Fishery consists of the Kylemore Middle and Castle lakes, with five and a half miles of the Dawros river which enters the sea in Ballynakill bay.  Salmon and sea-trout run for a good proportion of the year to provide first class fishing on uncrowded waters.

The open panoramas of the lakes contrast with the intimacy of the river to give a variety of fishing combined with stunning scenery unrivalled anywhere in Ireland. Although offering an excellent chance of a fish for most of the season, you will find the real meaning of “a fish is a bonus” at Kylemore.

Top Honours for Carrickmacross Coarse Angling and Youth Development Club at TAGIT Competition

Top Honours for the Carrickmacross Coarse Angling and Youth Development Club

Tom Cogan reports that the Cross Border Peace Cup was won on Saturday 31st May 2014 by Carrickmacross Coarse Angling and Junior Development Club. The event was hosted again by the TAGIT angling club at their Golden Glen Fishery in Newtownards.

In what was a very competitive field the Carrickmacross Club managed to take top honours at this prestigious event. The team consisted of 2 seniors Peadar O’Brien and Mal McLoud and 2 juniors Lee Harris and Killian Cogan. Following the clubs success at the event Tom Cogan commented “this is a huge achievement for the club as it is only up and running for 2 years now”.

The success is also all the more notable in so far as all of the junior anglers have come through the clubs youth development programme which has been sponsored by Inland Fisheries Ireland. The club has been running a recruitment campaign for the last few years, initially using Fisheries Awareness Week as a recruitment vehicle. From this the club has now gone from strength to strength and developed regular coaching sessions and week long summer camps.

The new coaching initiative takes anglers from the basics of identifying the right gear, tying knots, setting up the gear and then on to how to fish and how to catch and handle fish. The coaching staff at the club give introductions to pole, whip, feeder and waggler fishing techniques and the demonstrate the fishing tactics associated with each method. The wealth of experience passed on from the club members and coaching staff has ensured that the youngsters have had one of the best starts in what is sure to be very successful fishing careers. The recent success a the TAGIT event demonstrates that the clubs youth development strategy is working well.

In the junior event Lee Harris took part in the over 12 event and Killian Cogan represented the club in the under 12 section. All members of the team fished magnificently returning a total number of points of 54. Trout was the main catch of the day with some nice bags of roach also being returned. Each trout counted as 1 point and each lb of coarse fish also as 1 point. All of the hard work, preparation, coaching and practice sessions paid off for the members of the Carrickmacross seniors and juniors. This success is not just a one off and follows other recent successes in a number of inter- club matches.

The venue for the competition was at the TAGIT Fishing Clubs, Golden Glen Fishery in Newtownards and everyone commented on what a wonderful fishery it is. Tom Cogan on behalf of the Carrickmacross Club commented “the hospitality shown to us throughout the day was absolutely awesome, with sandwiches, tea , coffee and minerals served to the fishing pegs and in addition to this there was a barbeque later that evening”. Tom added “this is truly a great day for the club and we look forward to hosting the next round at Lough Muckno in the near future. Congratulations to all who took part. Everyone is a winner”.

The Flies "May" Change but the Fish Remain the Same

Peter Cunningham from Drogheda Angling Centre has been back on Lough Sheelin again recently. Regular visitors to Sheelin know that when you can hit the right evenings the fishing can be spectacular but when you hit those cold evenings you have to work very hard to try and eke out that fish or couple of fish. It’s difficult but not impossible and sometimes requires that little change in tactics. Peter visited on a number of such evenings but still managed to get his few fish.

Ruairi Coleman from the Swords Angling Centre reports that was out on Sheelin a few times last week with a couple of customers from the shop and they had plenty of trout. The fish were mostly small and weighed from 1 to 2 and a half pounds. The fishing has been great this year with lots of big fish around. There have been some very good falls of spent on the evenings as well which has produced some good fishing.
For up to date angling information and a range of top gear why not drop into Ruairi at his new shop in Swords. He stocks a full range of sea, game, pike and coarse angling tackle and bait. Wise words from Stephen Brennan of IrishSportFishing.com as he fishes at Owenmore:

Never are you more aware of how small a hook you have on until you hook a fish. This sea-liced bar of silver took a size 12 Ally’s Shrimp pattern, and I don’t know how it stayed on with all the acrobatics. Oh, and it was a barbless hook too!

Owenmore is C&R this year and can be very hit and miss with the water levels, but get it right and there’s a good chance of a fish. Cracking fly water too.

Some stingers for Dave and Paul

Stephen Brennan author of IrishSportFishing.com rounded the gang up for a spot of sea fishing on bank holiday Monday and tells us:

Some anglers made the most of the recent good weather and managed to bag themselves some stingers, including these fish for Dave Roe and Paul Molyneux. There were bigger fish caught, and some even bigger fish lost! It won’t be long now ’til the main flurry of them is over for another year.
