Good run of sea trout at Owenmore

Frank Maunsell reports on the conditions and prospects on the Owenmore Fishery in co. Kerry…

05/06/2014: There are plenty of sea trout running and they are being caught on the lakes and in the river. For two or three nights when the river was low we had some great night fishing also Our biggest trout by night was 3 1/2 lbs but trout up to 5 lbs have been seen travelling up the river. Heavy rain forecast for Friday so from Saturday evening onwards the fishing should be excellent.

Paul and Darren get a taste of the wild Irish waters

Paul with a couple of nice Tench.
Paul with a couple of nice Tench.

Paul and Darren decided on a fishing holiday to Ireland this year and decided to stay with Kevin and Jane at Melview Lodge in Longford, not having been to Ireland before Kevin showed them around when they arrived so they could get a look at the various types waters. Kevin said the guys fished two or three waters during their stay and produced some nice Bream, Hybrids, Tench and Roach. I think next time they will do even better after getting a taste for the wild Irish waters, well done guys.

Prebaiting works well for Grandad and Grandson at Melview Lodge with young Dominic winning 'Catch of the Week'

Superb catch by Dominic Backer wins him our ‘Catch of the week’

Melview Lodge report:
Ian Taylor and Grandson Dominic Backer from Yorkshire were over for their annual fishing holiday and used Melview Lodge in Longford as their base, Kevin said the guys have stayed before and decided to prebait and fish one of the same places that produced for them last year. Mainly fishing the feeder at various distances were able to produce some good Bream, Hybrids, Tench and Roach.

The prebaiting however not only attracted the coarse fish but also rang the dinner bell for the Pike to move in, and so caused a few problems for them. Dominic managed to catch one of the Pike around 6 to 7lb and things then seemed to settle down for them, Kevin said the guys put in the hours and the bait and were rewarded with a good weeks fishing.

Gone Fishing: The cost of having a catch nearby – Irish Independent

Irish Independent photo

There’s an unattributed quote on the subject of fishing which says that an angler is a man who sits around all day doing nothing on the water because his wife won’t let him do nothing at home.

But within that predominantly male society of studied idleness there is – naturally – a hierarchy.

There’s sea fishing from the shore, up against the waves, which is free and which anyone can do, risking nothing but their own lives and the lives of mackerel.

There’s coarse fishing, in which you spend all day trying to catch a fish that you don’t want to eat, only to be derided as a mere drowner of worms.

And above all that is the elite – mostly gentlemen’s – club of fly-fishing, in which you spend all day trying to catch a fish that you’re probably not allowed to eat, and using the most obtuse and difficult methods, and then brag about it.

Ireland is internationally famous for its fly-fishing, but there are byzantine laws dictating who can fish, for what and from where…..

Irish Angling Update – 05/06/14

Heading for home after a good day on Lough Conn

It was another busy week for anglers in Ireland with specimen salmon, tench, congers and more landed in the last few days. The warm weather and mostly settled conditions encouraged more anglers to take to the waters and the wilds, and with extra time to play with at the long weekend, the opportunities to fish were seized by many.

Congratulations to Steven Rayner who records the first blue shark of the season
Catch of the Weeks goes to Steven Rayner who records the first blue shark of the season. Blue shark were also caught from Clonakilty at the weekend.

There were some fine sized salmon caught around the country last week. On the Delphi fishery a 19lb 9oz fish was caught during a busy week. This fish is the biggest taken from Delphi in the modern era. A 22.1 lb salmon was taken during the last week of May at Screebe, though the fishery has been a bit quiet since. Salmon to 14lb were reported from the Moy and Laune. Inagh Lodge fishery reported its first salmon of the year. Anglers on the Moy Estuary have had some great sea trout fishing recently with fishing coming well to fly and bait.

England won the Spring International Match on Lough Owel last week. Using conventional reservoir rainbow angling methods the team caught 59 trout for just over 75lb to secure first place. Lough Sheelin had another good week as the Mayfly patterns continued to tempt some good trout. The heaviest trout reported for the week was a beautiful 9 pounder caught on Thursday May 29th by Noel McLoughlin, Kells on a spent gnat. Lough Ennel is also reported to be fishing well. Two anglers on Lough Conn last week had 28 trout to 2lb over 4 days. Dry mayfly patterns and Green Peters were the killing flys. This week’s banner image was taken at the end of a good day on the lake as the sun set.

The first blue shark of the season were early again this year. Steven Rayner fishing on the  Loch an Iasc had the first blue of the season fishing from Union Hall on Saturday. Anglers on the Tigger out of Clonakilty had  8 sharks between 50 and 90 lb the same day. Tope were also recorded for the first time this season at a number of places over the weekend including the Shannon Estuary, Sligo Bay and Downings, Co. Donegal. Charter boat fishing in Valentia Island saw some great catches for a group of German anglers including conger to 45lb. The fishing was also good at Kinsale where large whiting and good haddock made for happy anglers. Pollack anglers fishing with Richie Ryan learned the value of the fly as other methods failed to produce while a fish a cast was possible on a fur and feather lure. At Wicklow anglers enjoyed some great fishing for bullhuss, spurdogs and smooth hounds.  At the Tag a Ray competition in Tralee Bay over the weekend 6 Stingray, 7 Thornback Ray, 1 Painted Ray and 27 Undulate Ray were caught and tagged. A highlight over the weekend was the catching of a 60lb female stingray which was close to pupping, proving these fish breed locally.

In coarse angling, Tommy Pickering won the Mahons Festival with 109.900kg, a match record. This was an exceptional catch made just as many of the coarse species become particularly elusive as the urge to spawn takes over. Will Freeman won the Ottewill 3 Day Feeder Only Festival on Inniscarra Reservoir. The match was fished on 3 venues including the new stretch at Coachford which is now closed in advance of the World Feeder Fishing Championship. While many of the silver fish are off spawning anglers at Ballyhoe still had some good tench fishing with some great specimens to 7lb reported.

Pike fishing seems to have slowed down a bit though jacks are still quite obliging, particularly in the shallows. Some better pike were reported at Derravaragh on the troll where fish into double figures hit a variety of brightly coloured lures.

The weather forecast for the weekend is for more rainy, unsettled conditions though it will remain warm with temperatures into the high teens during the day and staying in the double figures overnight. Sunday is to be more breezy and the broken conditions will continue into next week.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Myles Kelly

Guidelines for handling pike

pike

Download: Pike Handling and Conservation [.pdf 850 KB]

When landed, the fish should be laid flat preferably on a protective mat and the hooks removed with a suitable tool such as long handled artery forceps or a long nosed pliers. Anglers may find it useful to wear protective gloves. Sometimes it can be easier to release the hooks by working very carefully through the gill covers.

The use of pike sacks can be used for the short time retention of fish enabling them to recover prior to weighing or photography. When weighing and photographing fish, the pike should be cradled and supported properly to avoid injuring the fish. A pike sized weigh sling should always be used if the fish is be weighed.

When being released, the pike should be held carefully in the water to promote recovery until it is ready to swim away. At all times, the pike should be returned to the water in the shortest possible time.

Paddy Dolan Trophy on Lough Lene Sunday June 8th

This coming Sunday June 8th Lough Lene Anglers will host the Paddy Dolan Trophy. Its a 11am start at Fagan’s Point and all boats in at 6pm. I have not got much time to fish Lene in recent weeks with the May Fly season in full swing and International on Owel last week.  Lough Lene will produce some huge pike over the coming summer months, and a few just might take the bait for the Paddy Dolan Trophy.

10 lovely pike on colourful lures and in great condition at Derravaragh

Midland Angling’s Michael Flanagan tells us the Pike boys are back:

Last week Stan Ryan and Justin Gorden were featured in Angling Focus with some super pike. They had planned another trip to Derravaragh after the fantastic fishing and this time took pals Jim McDonnell and Willie worth on board. The lads arrived on Donore shore in brilliant sunshine, and the Lake was looking a million dollars with just a slight breeze blowing that would keep the boats drifting nicely. Willie and Jim had not really done much pike fishing and Jim never actually caught a pike before, but this we sorted during the day. Jim and Willie had 10 lovely pike with some well into double figures. All the fish were caught on the troll with colorful lures, and were in great condition.
