Irish Angling Update – 03/04/14

What a spring we are having this year here in Ireland.  When I think of the horrible spring anglers and fish had to endure in 2013, this year’s spring weather has been much kinder with good average temperatures together many fine days and anglers are reaping some wonderful fishing on our inland waters.  High water levels still prevail in some fisheries but in general conditions on many of our waters have been excellent and some exceptional fish were recorded in the past week.

A twelve year old angler caught a fine 12 lb. salmon on his own tied fly on a beat on the Cork Blackwater at Blackwater Lodge.  Over in Mayo, there was some nice salmon reported from Carrowmore Lake.  In Connemara, the first salmon of the season were recorded at Ballynahinch and on the Costello and Fermoyle Fisheries.  There was mixed weather down on Lough Currane last week but the highlight of the week was a fine caught and released salmon for an Italian visitor.  In Delphi, there was some salmon lost and some nice fish up to 12 lb. reported in the past week.  On the River Slaney the Kilbride beat produced the first salmon after a seven year closure.  The River Bundrowes continues to fish very well producing very steady fishing with salmon to 12.5 lb. recorded this week.

It has been an exciting week for trout anglers especially on loughs where the first hatches of Duckfly brought some success for anglers.  There were good hatches on Lough Corrib and some excellent fishing recorded in some parts of this huge lough.  There were lesser hatches on nearby Lough Mask but the wetfly fishing was still very good on most days of the week.  The River Nire in Tipperary produced some lovely river trout fishing for clients fishing on nymphs at Clonanav.  The easterly winds did test anglers fishing on Lough Sheelin last week but the big trout were still brought to the net on most days.  The north east rivers like the Fane are still producing superb trout fishing and well known American angler and journalist wrote a fine article on his recent trip to the area where he enjoyed a great trip.  The Waterford loughs are producing very good fishing for Rainbows and good brown trout in the past week with midge hatches bringing trout on the feed.  Most of the well stocked fisheries in the south east are fishing well and offer great sport.

One of the exceptional fish caught last week was a huge brown trout of 14 lb. which was caught on Lough Muckno in Co. Monaghan by an angler dead baiting for pike.  Down in Longford, angling guide Kevin Lyons also took a fine trout of 8 lb. 4 oz. on a deadbait while pike fishing with clients.  A Leixlip angler had two fine pike outings in small loughs in Leitrim with many double figure pike recorded following careful planning and was culminated with a fine 20 lb. pike.  Down on Lough Derg however a pike of 16 Kilos (35 lb. 5 oz.) which measured 1.18 metre was recorded by well known french angling guide Pierre Monjarret from Killaloe on a busker jerk pro bait.  This the biggest authenticated pike recorded in Ireland in many years. Pierre’s fish is our ‘Catch of the Week‘.   He had another fine pike of 1.07 metres the following day.  US marines on holiday here enjoyed great sport in the loughs in Co. Monaghan while guided by Brendan O’Reilly.

There was two major coarse angling festivals were formerly launched last week and are open for entry.  The Ireland Classic Fishing Festival will take place in Co. Fermanagh in May and the great Canal Festival at Edenderry takes place in early June.  Entries should be made as these events are often sold out quickly.  The Oaklands Fishery at New Ross in Co. Wexford produced some excellent weight for match anglers fishing the Mother’s day competition.

We have no sea angling news this week but this fine spell of weather should see some activity soon.  There is plenty of other news items in this week’s angling update and finally if you are going afloat, please seek out an up to date weather report and be safe and wear a lifejacket please.  It is the law and we want all anglers to enjoy the best of Irish Angling.

Tight lines especially in Ireland

IRELAND – Minister Simon Coveney has confirmed 230,000 salmon are missing after storms significantly damaged Murphy’s salmon farm in Gearhries, Bantry Bay, on 1 February 2014. This is Ireland’s largest single salmon farm escape in history.

“As things stand there is no evidence of any mortalities at the Gearhries salmon farm. To date, not one of the missing salmon are accounted for. This could spell disaster for wild salmon in Bantry Bay,” said Alec O’Donovan, Secretary of Save Bantry Bay….

FG candidate says "too many unanswered questions" remain over fish farm – Galway Advertiser

No fish farm should be located in Galway Bay, until serious questions about potential risks, pollution, sea lice, and escapees, are answered publicly, through an oral hearing.
This is the view of Fine Gael Connemara candidate Niamh Byrne, who has “serious reservations” about An Bord Iascaigh Mhara’s proposal to locate a 1,126 acre, 15,000 tonne, open caged salmon fish farm off Inis Óirr.
Ms Byrne and the Fine Gael Oughterard branch say “too many questions remain unanswered” on the issue. As a result, they will be writing to the Marine Minister Simon Coveney, calling on him not to grant permission for the farm until the risks fully examined….

A young angler catches a fine 12 lb. salmon on his own fly at Blackwater Lodge

Proprietor Ian Powell reports on a young angler who caught a fine salmon on his own fly at Blackwater Lodge

12 year old James O’Keeffe was fishing with his Dad Thomas last Saturday afternoon  March 28 on the Inches on Upper Kilmurry on the lower river.
He was fishing in a spot that most experienced anglers would have walked past without bothering to fish there.

He caught a 12 lb. beauty on a
#10 Cascade which he had tied himself
on a fast sinking tip line.
The fish took him 40 minutes to land.

It’s the Best Fish on the Fly

Exciting sport all the year round at well stocked stillwater fisheries

South East Angling services guide Gerard Doran makes the most of the extra hour in the evening and visits a well stocked fishery:

Long bright evenings are slowly approaching with the water temperatures rising also the fish are becoming much more active. Air temperatures are below average for the time of year which made for some very enjoyable early morning and late evening sessions recently.

Ger Doran - Rainbow (1)Stocked stillwater fisheries make for some exciting sport all year round and are readily available throughout the country. Many of these fisheries are spring fed or have some source of natural water flowing into them so as a result they also might hold native fish.

Where possible fishing light tackle is the route I generally choose regardless of target species. Fishing a 3/4 weight or 4/5 weight rod in stocked fisheries might seem too light to many people but I find such equipment a pleasure to fish with and perfectly practical for most fisheries.

Ger Doran - BrownThe # 4/5 Airflo setup was utilised greatly on recent sessions with floating or slow sinking weight forward lines, 6 lbs leader with fly choice being a variety of small beaded nymphs all tied to represent each areas natural available food life. Short fan casts covering all areas retrieved using a slow figure of eight worked in most cases with fish taking furiously and fighting extremely hard all the way to the net. Mostly well built rainbows with some nice browns landed for good measure ensured we were busy and quite content anglers.

Ger Doran - Brown (2)Taking great notice of surrounding activity and putting observations into action can improve your results greatly. If you are struggling but do manage to catch a fish and intend keeping it perhaps use a marrow spoon to inspect what the fish was feeding on prior to taking your fly.

Well renowned coarse and pike angling venue Lough Muckno, Castleblayney amazed local anglers when it produced a superb 14 lb. wild brown trout last Thursday. The fish was caught by local angler Mr Steven Donaghy while he was using a dead bait fishing for pike.  A truly amazing day on Lough Muckno.

Mark Whiteside and friend Kerry Hardy from N. Ireland were once again down for a guided Pike fishing trip with guide and guest house owner Kevin Lyons of Melview Lodge Longford, Kevin said both Mark and Kerry have been down a few times and have both caught some great fish. The first day was not a good day for the boat due to high winds so they fished on a spot from the bank using both dead baits and the fly, things were slow to start but after lunch the Pike came on the feed and fell to both Fly and dead baits. The second day out on the boat again after lunch time did produce pike to Fly and dead baits, but their were also a lot of losses on the dead baits and we were all wondering  why. Later in the afternoon Kevin struck into what he thought was a good Pike take but after just a few seconds it was clear this was not a Pike, when we landed on the bank the fish weight in at 8lb 4oz which was a personal best. Kevin said the next day I even tried fly fishing for the Pike and even though I have only been fly fishing for a couple years still managed to bank not a monster Pike but still one that gave me a good fight on light tackle, Kerry was also able to pick up some bigger Pike on the fly that afternoon. Great few days, thanks lads.

Two great trips for pike in small loughs in Co. Leitrim brings a great 20 lb. pike for Leixlip angler

Karl with that lovely 20 lb.+ pike to wrap up a memorable session.

Karl Bohan, Leixlip reports on two recent pike trips  to two small loughs in Co. Leitrim through emails along with photos

I was out on a new lake Sunday morning to check for possible bream/tench swims and access, I decided to bring the pike gear with me to try winkle one out. I fished two rods on alarms with static deadbaits.  After 30 mins  I had two fish in quick sucession. I then had all four seasons in the next hour or two including high winds and hailstones which had me questioning my sanity as I was travelling very light and didn’t have a brolly or chair with me! I had two dropped runs and then at around 11 o clock the right hand rods screeched away. Once I set the hooks I knew it was a decent fish and after a spirited fight I had her in the net, a nice upper double.  I took a quick snap and let her back. I packed it in shortly after with 3 fish for 31 lb. Although the weathers been poor I am probably having the best run with the pike I ever had having caught 7 fish over 15 lb. in my last two sessions not to mention many smaller fish. I am thinking of putting away the pike gear on a positive note and now I am looking forward to tackling the bream who are just waking up.

On the second trip last weekend, I was heading back to a venue in leitrim which had thrown up some good fish for me in the past but I hadn’t landed a fish in the last six trips there.  So it was an all or nothing trip for me and luckily it was all! I approached the fishing with in a different approach, after 3 hours mapping with the boat I was confident I had found an area that was holding fish, I anchored up in about 28ft of water and had three pike to 16 lb. in maybe 90 mins. I then set upon setting up my bivvy on the bank as it was coming upon five o clock. It was dark by the time I set up camp so I cooked some dinner and put out two baits on the alarms overnight. No touches during the night. At roughly first light I had my first run, a dropped bait I checked the bait and recasted just as I was setting the rod down the other rod went off.  A nice mid double, as I was unhooking it the other rod went off, In what turned out to be a hectic 3 hours I had no less than seven pike ranging between 12-20 lb. including two double hook-ups and four being over 15.

Karl with two fine pike

I think the highlight of the trip was when one of the fish became snagged up and I had take the boat out to free it, It turned out to be the 20 and what a sight it was, not a ripple on the water and not a noise to be heard apart from the crashing around of this fish tailwalking and cartwheeling in the mist that was still rising from the lake at one stage as she shook her head the pollan which was used to deceive her flew from her mouth 20 feet in the air, I chinned her out after giving her a breather she tipped the scales to just over the 20 mark. In what has been a tough time piking this year this trip has certainly made up for it.
