Slaney River Trust reports on April 6th, 2014:

Before the rain came on Wednesday the fishing on the Slaney was starting to pick up in particular with fish being met upstream as shown by Kevin Keagan’s lovely 9 lber off the Tullow Club water (photo courtesy of Thomas Nolan Photography). Lower down stream Mossy Browne at Tombrick finally got off the mark with a sea liced 10 lber  and Antony Doran had 2 fish on Clohamon on Tuesday the largest being 96cm (close to 20lbs!). The rain which came on Wednesday put a stop to the party with just a couple of fish met on Sunday. If the water starts to drop next week we should see the lower beats and Enniscorthy start to come into play.

Fly guide looking forward to good pollacking and more in Cork Harbour as summer approaches

Richie Ryan of Eire Bass again reports of his plans for pollack on the fly in deep water yet again this year Himself and his clients have had fabulous sport chucking fluff for this very sporting fish. He reports that he has had great success in water 40ft plus feet deep with HD lines and heavy flies.

Having completed a video editing course run by Jim Clohessy for the Cork Harbour Angling Hub, Richie dipped his toes in the water and produced some videos. His latest is Pollack on the Fly Part 2 is filmed in the Cork area. The video was chosen by the site Total Fishing.nl for their Friday Film slot.

Carrickmacross Youth Anglers Take 4 out of Top 5 Places at Today's Match

A Great Bream for Lee Today at Annagheirin in Co Cavan

A coarse match was held today Sunday 6th April on Annagheirin Lake in Co Cavan with members of Carrickmacross and Drogheda Coarse Angling Clubs. Although temperatures were high today and the water was in perfect condition high squally winds made fishing difficult. Hitting the mark was tough but all of the young anglers managed well on the day. Nine anglers fished and Lee Harris of the Carrickmacross Coarse Anglers took top honours in the Match with a nice net weighing 5lb 10ozs. Second place went to Shane O’Reilly of Drogheda Coarse Angling Club and Stephen White took third with 2lbs 14ozs. Jamie Edwards was just pipped into fouth position. The young Carrickmacross anglers again demonstrated their high skill set with a great performance by all youth members of the club.

Light Feeding Keeps the Fish Keen on Lough Muckno

A Nice Net of Roach from Lough Muckno

Lough Muckno is well known for the quality of its coarse angling and never ceases to surprise. Anglers constantly seek to find that magical formula that will bring success and keep the fish in the swim and feeding, all day, especialy during a match. On a recent outing to Concra Wood on Muckno I simply added four medium feeders of groundbait and nothing more. Two red maggots fished on a .10 hook-length and size 12 hook brought good success but dozens of bites missed. Scaling down to a size 16 hook and a single maggot and keeping tight in touch with the bait brought very small roach, 1oz to 2ozs. Some nice roach as well but what was surprising was how little feed was required. I suppose that more feed might have gotten rid of the tiny fish but that’s for another day. It was still nearly a bite a chuck at 55 turns. What a venue!

Don’t forget the upcoming Easter Festival Competition Schedule for Lough Muckno.

Safety checks for anglers now – Irish examiner

Photo : Irish Examiner

The tragedy involving three anglers on Lough Ree is a reminder to everyone who enjoys our lakes, rivers or seas of how very unforgiving, how very threatening adverse weather can be.

That warning is underlined by the fact that the anglers, all visitors from Armagh, were very familiar with the lake and were experienced boat handlers. Despite that they were no match for the difficult conditions and were quickly overcome by exposure and cold.

Everyone who uses a boat knows, or at least they should know, that tragedy like this is a real possibility. Because of this, safety precautions cannot be ignored or treated lightly…

Save Bantry Bay group claims sea lice statement 'misleading' – Irish Times

Irish Times - Danny Murray, Terenure, Dublin, with a magnificent trout, 3.8kg in weight, 64cm in length, caught and released on Lough Sheelin last weekend. Danny was ghillied by Gary McKiernan
Irish Times - Danny Murray, Terenure, Dublin, with a magnificent trout, 3.8kg in weight, 64cm in length, caught and released on Lough Sheelin last weekend. Danny was ghillied by Gary McKiernan

With reference to recent media coverage relating to Marine Institute research on sea lice, the Save Bantry Bay group concludes the statement was “misleading” and “deceptive”.
The statement claims the Journal of Fish Diseases apologised for publishing the critique of the work of Dr David Jackson, senior Marine Institute fisheries inspector, and that the critique was “downgraded”.
When read more closely, the apology is for nothing more than an administrative error that meant Jackson’s response was not published alongside the critique. What is more, at no point does it suggest the critique was “downgraded” or that there are any errors in the critique, according to Save Bantry Bay…..

Catching pollack caught on video by the Bellavista team

Soft plastic supremo, Jim Clohessy, has been out recently getting in some early season soft plastic fishing. Jim reports on his early season foray….

‘Kevin M & myself hit some reefs the other day. Incredibly this was our first trip of 2014! Fishing was steady but the average size was small. We did get a few decent fish. Pollack were the mainstay with plenty of small coalies and a few ling making up the rest. Kevin had most success on metal while I did most damage with a Yokouna Sentail on an articulated head.’

Given the long run of winter storms we had this year Jim and Kevin were indeed lucky to get out. Hopefully, the weather will settle down from here on in and we should see more angling reports coming in all round.

Jim is now doing some fine articles on www.topfisher.eu. Check it out!

Once again the lads were fishing onboard one of Kevin’s boats from the Bellavista self-drive fleet. If you’d like further details check out www.bellavistahotel.ie or give Kevin a bell on 00-353-21-4812450.

Irish Angling Update – 03/04/14

What a spring we are having this year here in Ireland.  When I think of the horrible spring anglers and fish had to endure in 2013, this year’s spring weather has been much kinder with good average temperatures together many fine days and anglers are reaping some wonderful fishing on our inland waters.  High water levels still prevail in some fisheries but in general conditions on many of our waters have been excellent and some exceptional fish were recorded in the past week.

A twelve year old angler caught a fine 12 lb. salmon on his own tied fly on a beat on the Cork Blackwater at Blackwater Lodge.  Over in Mayo, there was some nice salmon reported from Carrowmore Lake.  In Connemara, the first salmon of the season were recorded at Ballynahinch and on the Costello and Fermoyle Fisheries.  There was mixed weather down on Lough Currane last week but the highlight of the week was a fine caught and released salmon for an Italian visitor.  In Delphi, there was some salmon lost and some nice fish up to 12 lb. reported in the past week.  On the River Slaney the Kilbride beat produced the first salmon after a seven year closure.  The River Bundrowes continues to fish very well producing very steady fishing with salmon to 12.5 lb. recorded this week.

It has been an exciting week for trout anglers especially on loughs where the first hatches of Duckfly brought some success for anglers.  There were good hatches on Lough Corrib and some excellent fishing recorded in some parts of this huge lough.  There were lesser hatches on nearby Lough Mask but the wetfly fishing was still very good on most days of the week.  The River Nire in Tipperary produced some lovely river trout fishing for clients fishing on nymphs at Clonanav.  The easterly winds did test anglers fishing on Lough Sheelin last week but the big trout were still brought to the net on most days.  The north east rivers like the Fane are still producing superb trout fishing and well known American angler and journalist wrote a fine article on his recent trip to the area where he enjoyed a great trip.  The Waterford loughs are producing very good fishing for Rainbows and good brown trout in the past week with midge hatches bringing trout on the feed.  Most of the well stocked fisheries in the south east are fishing well and offer great sport.

'Catch of the Week' winner Pierre Monjaret with his super 35 lb. 5.5 oz (16 Kilos) and 118cms Pike from Lough Derg
‘Catch of the Week’ winner Pierre Monjaret with his super 35 lb. 5.5 oz (16 Kilos) and 118cms Pike from Lough Derg

One of the exceptional fish caught last week was a huge brown trout of 14 lb. which was caught on Lough Muckno in Co. Monaghan by an angler dead baiting for pike.  Down in Longford, angling guide Kevin Lyons also took a fine trout of 8 lb. 4 oz. on a deadbait while pike fishing with clients.  A Leixlip angler had two fine pike outings in small loughs in Leitrim with many double figure pike recorded following careful planning and was culminated with a fine 20 lb. pike.  Down on Lough Derg however a pike of 16 Kilos (35 lb. 5 oz.) which measured 1.18 metre was recorded by well known french angling guide Pierre Monjarret from Killaloe on a busker jerk pro bait.  This the biggest authenticated pike recorded in Ireland in many years. Pierre’s fish is our ‘Catch of the Week‘.   He had another fine pike of 1.07 metres the following day.  US marines on holiday here enjoyed great sport in the loughs in Co. Monaghan while guided by Brendan O’Reilly.

There was two major coarse angling festivals were formerly launched last week and are open for entry.  The Ireland Classic Fishing Festival will take place in Co. Fermanagh in May and the great Canal Festival at Edenderry takes place in early June.  Entries should be made as these events are often sold out quickly.  The Oaklands Fishery at New Ross in Co. Wexford produced some excellent weight for match anglers fishing the Mother’s day competition.

We have no sea angling news this week but this fine spell of weather should see some activity soon.  There is plenty of other news items in this week’s angling update and finally if you are going afloat, please seek out an up to date weather report and be safe and wear a lifejacket please.  It is the law and we want all anglers to enjoy the best of Irish Angling.

Tight lines especially in Ireland
