Galway Buccaneers SAC wish Congrats to Steve Turner on winning leg 6 of our boat master angler series 2013 sponsored by Galway Bay Fishing. In doing so he secured the overall series for 2013 to be crowned Galway Buccaneers SAC boat master angler 2013. Hearty congratulations from all your fellow club members.
Steve fished consistently throughout the series and was a deserving winner. Steve went into the last session knowing that Conor Mountaine needed to win and himself come 4th for there to be a reversal in the standings. The two battled it out until the finish with Conor coming up just short on the day finishing in 2nd place and runner up for the 2nd year in a row in the overall series.
Fishing on the day was made difficult by a fresh swirling wind persistent rain that never let up for the day and a moderate swell. Our skipper worked hard to put us on fish and keep us in relative shelter using his years of experience and knowledge. Steve as so many times this series built up a lead with both fish and species and Conor with a customary strong finish came back strongly.
Many thanks to all who fished the boat comps this year and also to those who came and fished on the boats it was our pleasure fishing with you all and we hope you enjoyed the excellent fishing that was on offer throughout the year.
A big thank you to our very own Fear Uisce Kevin MacGabhann for both his continued sponsorship and for looking after us all year with first class fishing. If you’ve never been out for a days fishing with Kevin before you’re missing out on a great experience and a fantastic days fishing, we can’t recommend him enough top class.
That’s it for the boat comps for 2013. If you fancy being apart of it for 2014 membership is now open please contact our club secretary Conor Mountaine on 0877660808 for details you’ll be made most welcome.
After the very strong winds the previous weekend Rockhunter reckoned the cod would start to move inshore in greater numbers. So he placed an order for 2 dozen crabs for the weekend. Off he set on Saturday the 9th and he reports:
I arrived at a reliable mark just after low tide. It was a very mild evening with just a light breeze. The tide had not started to move as I was setting up two rods with 4/0 pennel pulleys baited with fresh crab. I had fished there the previous neap tides and the shore had been strewn with debris (branches, logs, seaweed, bottles etc) but the last big tide cycle had cleared it off.
Shortly after casting out I had a strong knock on one of the rods. It felt to be a strong fish and I could tell from the fight that it was a cod. After a few minutes I hauled a 4.25 lb cod out of the channel. That was a good start and it was not even dark yet (this mark normally fishes far better after dark).
It was quite for a while after that. Then after dark I had three cod is quick succession; the first was 2.25 lbs, followed by a 2.5 lb fish and then a smaller one under 1.5 lbs. A little later I had a better fish of 3.5 lbs, followed by a 3 lb cod 20 minutes later. This was shortly followed by a 2 lb fish.
There was a bit of a lull for 20-25 minutes then I had another three in the space of a few minutes, a 3 pounder, then a 2.5 lbs fish followed by another 3 lb cod.
It got quite again so after about half an hour I decided to pack up. At that stage I had caught 11 cod, 10 of those were 2 lb or above which I kept, and released the only fish under 2 lbs.
I dismantled one rod and brought some of the gear and fish to the car. However, when I got back the tip of the remaining rod was bouncing. I retrieved to find a 3.75 lb cod on the last cast.
Sunday 10th
Sunday was a wet day but I decided to return to the same mark as I had about a dozen crabs left. Just before leaving home the rain got heavier but I hoped it would ease off but it lashed down for most of the remainder of the evening. There was quite a strong SSW/SW wind too. So it was not a pleasant night to be out.
I set up at the same spot just as the tide was beginning to rise. The fishing was a lot slower for the first couple of hours this time. I did have a couple of small codling of 1-1.75 lbs which went back. It was only when the tide began to push in strongly in that the fishing picked up. The first was a 3.5 lb cod, followed by three fish in the 2-2.75 lb range. Then there was a very strong tug on one of the rods. I picked it up, the line had gone slack. I reeled in the slack, the fish was heading upstream, I connected with it and struck. This felt to be a more substantial fish and it fought very strongly all the way it putting a severe bend in the rod as I tried to stop it digging into the channel margin. Eventually I got it close and thankfully no weed was caught in the leader knot and it was with relief that I saw the shockleader wind into the reel. It was a stocky 5.5 cod.
A fine 5.5 lbs cod
I fished on for a little longer but there were no more bites so decided to pack up. The rain had been persistently heavy all the time I was fishing but then stopped as I was walking back to the car!!

Jack Tisdall of the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland NCFFI writes:
It has just been confirmed to me that, finally, the funding has been granted for the work to go ahead on access works for Inniscarra, Co. Cork in order to host the World Feeder Championships 2014.
When the works are completed on this project we will see for the first time in Ireland’s history a World Championship coarse angling venue to rival the best in the World. There will be over 200 unbroken pegs which will also mean that we can bid for more World and European events into the future thus creating a venue along the lines of what Rugby and Football have with the Aviva Stadium.
We would like to give our sincerest thanks to everyone who made this happen as at times there had to be much consultation and negotiation along with some interference from others outside this Federation.
We would like to thank are very own Tommy Lawton and Der Casey who were invaluable in this process and never gave in. We would also like to thank the members of the local community group who supported the NCFFI every step of the way.
Much thanks also goes to the local TD’s and Councillors along with the various Minsters and their departments.
This event would not be possible without the support of Inland Fisheries Ireland and Cork County Council.

Winter is definitely here for anglers struggling to fish venues on inland waters and at sea in the past week. However, anglers are a hardy bunch in any weather and catches of pike, rainbow trout and bass and skate from the sea show that where there is a way to catch fish in any weather the hardy angler will surely find. My advice, wrap up well and get fishing. There is still plenty of sport to be enjoyed all around Ireland.
Crab was the key bait for bass anglers reporting fish to 7 lb. taken on the shore in East Cork. Similar bass fishing was reported in many areas of West Cork where shad lures were catching some nice fish. Well known bass angling guide Jim Hendrick extols the virtues to anglers of “Leave no trace” while they enjoy the sport of fishing. Gerard Doran reported that he had super bass fishing in the south east in the past week. Up in Northern Ireland there was some fine skate recorded at “the Maidens” by angler’s small boat fishing. Congratulations are in order to Warren Doyle and the rest of the European Federation of Sea Anglers (EFSA) team on their gold medal winning performance for retaining the 2013 Shore Championships in the Heinkenszand, Zeeland area of Northern Holland from the 28th of October to November 1st 2013.
Luke Fitzpatrick with his 30 lb 2 oz pike from one of Monaghan’s lakes wins our ‘Catch of the Week’. Well done Luke!
Angling guide Mick Flanagan reports that the pike and perch in Lough Ennell have gone deeper and hard to catch as water temperatures plummet but expects good sport in the weeks ahead. Mick found it was pretty much the same on nearby Lough Derravarragh but he enjoyed some good sport on the River Inny near the lough. Up in Lough Key the annual pike awards for the anglers of the year were announced. It is nice to report some good pike caught on lures on the canal outside of Dublin up to 10 lb. 15 oz. Several venues around Co. Monaghan were in the pike news this week including some nice double figure fish reported taken on deadbaits. The best fish however of 30 lb. 2 oz. was taken by 14 year old Luke Fitzpatrick on a ledgered herring and wins our ‘Catch of the Week‘.
Good rainbow trout fishing was reported at Curragh Springs where many anglers using lures, nymphs and wetflies were enjoying good sport. Rainbow trout to 8 lb. were reported at the Courtland Trout Fishery as they announce their winter league competitions schedule for the coming months.
Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Gerard Doran of South East Angling Services gives such a wonderful description of his environment that I can almost taste the salt on my lips! He reports:
The wind howled, the rain poured, the sea choppy, conditions were great and the Bass were aggressively taking lures!
Some fabulous much welcomed sport was had this week lure fishing for Bass in what was a brief window of opportunity. All of the bass caught this week were in prime condition, Bars of silver fighting very hard.
On one occasion a very nice fish gently took a feed shallow and took off about thirty yards to my left giving one vigorous head shake and in doing so spat the hook, Can only wonder if it could of been another double figure fish….
The biggest Bass of many landed was 5.5lbs and a list of tackle used is below:
Lures: Slug-go, Wave worm, One up Shad,Tackle HouseFeed shallow, Duo Tide Minnow, Subsurface walkers.
Lure fishing for bass is challenging and demanding to both the angler and his or her equipment. The successful Bass angler must be able to anticipate and take advantage of each opportunity as it unfolds. The ‘when’ and ‘where’.
Water temperature remains quite high considering its mid November. Prospects for the Bass angler will remain challenging but positive for another short while if conditions allow fishing to take place productively.
All fish were released unharmed after taking scale samples and various details for IFI’s National Bass Program. Bass are such a slow growing fish it is important we treat them with care for the future good of our fishery.
