Pike are still biting in Boyle

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland was out on the water again in search for Midland pike. This time together with regular guest Michael from Germany. The accomplished lure angler paid the Boyle area a late season visit this year and wasn’t disappointed catching a good number of  pike best at 103cm over his 3-day visit.

and another one for Bodo

Bodo and Michael had 25 pike for the boat fishing two different venues…not bad for mid-November!

Superb November fishing in Galway Bay

Sunrise casts a golden light on boats in the marina

A beautiful but bitterly cold morning greeted a few of us in Rossaveal this week, as we boarded the Maighdean Mara charter boat for a day afloat in Galway Bay. The target was pollack, for research sampling, so skipper Kevin pointed the boat west for some rough ground where he expected to find them.

A frosty morning at Ros a Mhil Marina

It has been a very mild November up to this week, and water temperatures out the bay were a positively balmy 12.8C. A lot warmer than the -1 air temps we set out in, but the calm conditions meant it felt quite mild. We started on some shallow ground, about 14 metres, and from the first drop coalies started coming aboard in twos and threes. It was tremendous sport, with some really hard-fighting fish, and some nice cuckoo wrasse in among them, but not the quarry we were after.

Stunning colours on this male cuckoo wrasse

As we drifted on to deeper, rougher ground, pollack started to make themselves known, their explosive takes were unbelievable. A move to deeper reefs (30m) produced a steady take of pollack, mixed with the odd coalie, cuckoo and ballan wrasse. Fishing slowed over low tide, but when the tide turned the pollack came back on the feed in a massive way, with fish coming over the gunwale in a steady stream. Between 5 rods, there were 70-80 pollack caught, a similar number of coalies, quite a few ballan and cuckoo wrasse, and a couple of pouting too. All agreed that by any standards, for any time of year, it was exceptional fishing, and remarkable for November!

Skipper Kevin shows the crew how to do it

Sweet Tooth Pollack

Your correspondent brought along a bag of fruit jelly snake sweets from a well-known discount supermarket chain (cough, Lidl!) and shared them around. One of the crew wondered aloud if a fish would take one. Well, we cannot say it will always work, but the pollack were so hungry yesterday that two drops with a fruit jelly snake produced two pollack! Future outings may involve a comparison with other brands before we can recommend this one…

Tuna season ends with a flourish on south coast

The bluefin tuna season finished with a flourish off the south coast last week, with some sensational action for the boats involved.

Tony Santry of Kerry Angling and Tuna Charters reported some unbelievable tuna fishing in the Kingdom County of Kerry over the last few days of the tuna season – having not seen action like it in a long time. His crew had some great battles and every customer that got off his boat at the end of their day truly felt like they had been in the ring with Mike Tyson. There were very few small tuna around, with the larger than average fish providing a real test for any angler. Craig Walsh had an unforgettable day, he fought 4 tuna in the space of 2 hours with fish ranging from 60 to 95 inches. On the final day, once again Tony’s crew had some serious fighting action with two fish of 90 and 102 inches. Very well done to Jim and Dave on catching these fantastic fish and this was their first crack at it. What a great way to close a season.

Seahunter Charters also had some smashing action fishing south of Youghal. In two days they tagged four fish out of six hook ups and saw plenty of action in the surrounding waters.

Irish Deep Sea Charters only had one more opportunity to get out after tuna before the season closed and they made it count, hooking up to an energetic 190lb bluefin. It came alongside pretty quickly, but wasn’t ready to give in yet. It then did its best to get under the boat then for the next 10 minutes, but eventually, they got it alongside, tagged, recovered, and released.
That’s a wrap for the 2024 tuna season, one that was disrupted for long periods due to the sustained high winds that we experienced throughout the season. Roll on 2025.

Smashing pike fishing with Irish Fishing Tours on Lough Derg

Paul Bourke and Senan Stanley, well known angling guides, are getting some great pike fishing on Lough Derg this month. Paul reports…

Big Powerful pike are smashing our lures hard this November, so hard in fact this one even broke my favourite rod in half! It’s unusual for a rod to break like this. Might have struck the fish a small bit hard – thought it was bigger!

Also enjoying testing some new handmade lures, including some over 50cm! the pike seem to like them.

Thick in all the right places! ☺️🐷 This one hit the lure in shallow water, great condition, very powerful on the jerkbait gear!

Pike to 122cm for Cody as he smashes PB with Go Fishing Ireland

116cm pike - Cody Costello - Go Fishing Ireland
116cm pike - Cody Costello - Go Fishing Ireland

Cody Costello smashed his personal best twice in one day during a recent pike fishing session in Co. Cavan with Chris Barry of Go Fishing Ireland.

Pike activity was quiet at the start of the day, with smaller fish notable by their absence.

Then things changed.  His first fish of the day was a 116cm beauty, a new PB by some distance. But the best was yet to come. Later that afternoon Cody was trying out a new rod and went one better with another stunning fish. This time measuring 122cms. First fish on the new rod!

Both of the fish were taken on lures. Congratulations Cody – an exceptional catch by any standards and a day to remember.

Good pike at Lough Allua but better to come as temps fall

Sigi pike, Lough Allua

Greg Latour of Tir na Spideog is seeing a few pike caught on Lough Allua and expects things to improve with this cold spell…

While we had a good few pike around the 100cm mark in the last couple of weeks the big grannies are still not showing in numbers. With the predicted forecast of temperatures around 0°C , this should change soon…

Irish Fly Fair 2024 – over for another year

Dan O’Neill of South East Casting sent us in his report on the Irish Fly fair which was held in Enniskillen last weekend:

So that’s it for another year. It seems like you get to say hello to your fellow teammates and friends and then its goodbye as all what happens in between becomes a fond memory. The event this year was everything I had hoped for and more. I got to cast with some new people and also some familiar faces. I had promised to call back to many people at the fair but ended up out on the grass casting, helping people with slight faults they felt that they had.

I spend a lot of time watching casting videos and most things fly fishing and fly tying. To go and see the faces that create the magic works of art at the fly vice or produce artistic casting strokes with fantastic loops is mesmerising. Speaking to such people they make it look and sound so easy, they spend endless time explaining to enthusiasts how they create such art. The Irish fly fair truly brings out the people who are passionate about their sport and want to ensure its future for generations to come.

The level of modesty the exhibitors had made it so much easier to learn from them and listen to them. The trade stands made an immense effort and put on fantastic displays, they really interacted with their customers and welcomed them. The stands for all the different organisations were superb, with each giving out information on their work, greeting everyone with a smile and speaking about the fantastic things that they do. I managed to walk around a couple of times to have a talk to people I usually only get to speak to over the phone or by email.

It was great to see so many youths at the event and watch them learn and perhaps one day they will be sitting here writing something like this or casting/tying at a fly fair passing on their knowledge to the next generation. The organisation I am a part of APGAI Ireland had a fly-tying table inside and held the Peter O’Reilly fly tying competition which was superb.

Trevor Greene, Arthur Greenwood and Trevor Norris were just brilliant. The way they worked with the kids made me very proud to be a part of the organisation. My fellow casters outside also worked brilliantly and to see the way they teach and to watch them cast makes it an honor to be in APGAI. Ray McKeeman and Andy cooper did a great job with the kids casting and watching them teach was warming, it was very obvious watching them that they had a true passion for fly fishing and teaching the art.

The drive home to Kilkenny was full of memories from the fair, some I would smile fondly over and some I will never forget. Of course, a certain sadness loomed when I saw a sign for Kilkenny and realised the Irish Fly Fair 2024 had come to an end although it wasn’t long before my smile rekindled as I realised now the prep begins for the Irish fly fair 2025.

I’d like to thank Stevie Munn and his team for the invitation and giving me the opportunity to demonstrate. James Robbins from Cadence also for the support and allowing me to be part of the Cadence team and Yeti who sent me some very popular cups to give out at the fly fair to the youths of the sport and even some spare ones for the slightly older members of our sport. Finally, a huge thanks to Killyhevlin hotel, all the staff were so helpful and courteous.

Pollack, wrasse and bass for Cork Harbour small boat anglers

A Black Eel did some damage for me after my paddletails were being nipped off at the tail!
A Black Eel did some damage for me after my paddletails were being nipped off at the tail!

Jim Clohessy of TopFisher.eu was weighting up his choices to make the most of what was on offer at the weekend…

Choices, Choices…

With the impending weather change we had to make decisions. What would we like to achieve from our day? Weighing up all the alternatives we decided on a day in more inshore waters on the lures…. We’d get a bend in the rods first on the reefs and we would hope for hint to locate some bass on more open water…
Our first stop had us into fish straight away. Crash diving pollack up to 8lbs. Super fish. You’d like to think that the “bycatch only” rules on commercial fishing of pollack as allowing more fish to mature on the reefs.

Emmett with a decent pollack. At this time of year the fish are really in perfect condition.
Emmett with a decent pollack. At this time of year the fish are really in perfect condition.

We found plenty of fish and with a bit of work we managed to locate a few pods of decent sized fish. Emmett did his damage with one of my V2 heads and a shad body. I was doing wreck with Crazy Paddletails but was suffering a few tails being bitten off! It was certainly good craic. We roved about to a few other reefs in the vain hope of finding a few cod. It really looks bad for cod in our area.

Schoolies.... the pain of my bass fishing all year!
Schoolies…. the pain of my bass fishing all year!

We have been messing about with a pod of bass just outside the harbour. They have been there all summer but can be difficult to locate. You really need a tell-tale to find them as the area is so big. Bass are certainly on the autumn move within the harbour as there has been gatherings of bass in the outer harbour. A friend was searching for bait in the outer harbour and saw some gulls working… Bass were pushing sprat to the surface. He had a superb hour getting some fine bass – Tell-tale tells all!

A grand wrasse in some lovely light. All Novembers should be like this!
A grand wrasse in some lovely light. All Novembers should be like this!

Of course when we went into the area just a few days later there wasn’t a sign of a gull. We did pick up a few schoolies but you’d sort of expect them anyway. We had a few nice wrasse while we worked the ground looking for bass in what was a beautiful evening.

A Black Eel did some damage for me after my paddletails were being nipped off at the tail!
A Black Eel did some damage for me after my paddletails were being nipped off at the tail!

It looks like winter will be arriving over the next while and it may be that we’ll not get another run out in November. It certainly was the most benign end of October and November we have seen in years. We had some decent trips too. Some decent wrecking trips, I did very little on lures in recent weeks, and even some late season shark!

I put Skua into part winter mode, taking out electronics and most of the gear. It takes longer to get ready for any trip but it’s better for the gear.

Winter running - In winter time I take out my Echomaps and I spray up the connectors on the boat with contact spray.
