Improvement in hatches and fish more active on the Tar, Anner and Nire

Andrew Ryan from Clonanav Fly Fishing reports:

After several really cold harsh weeks the weather has begun to get a little milder. With the absence of the cold bitter east wind fishing on the rivers has started to pick up.  For the past few weeks conditions have been difficult with very few insects hatching and fishing holding down deep.

The past few days have seen an improvement in hatches and fish have become far more active. We have had some really good days on the Tar, Anner and Nire. The Suir has been high the past week or so with the heavy rain last week. It is dropping back quickly and should be in good order in the next few days.

Bo Ivanovic a seasoned angler from the UK had a few excellent days on the Tar and Anner getting some nice fish. Mainly on the nymph with very few fish rising.  Bo has fished all over the world and is an exceptional trout angler.

Alec Birchall and his two sons Charles and Rob have been fishing with us for over 10 years. They had some good sport in difficult conditions last week.

Genetic study finds Ice Age salmon refuge, BBC News

An area of coastal waters around North-West France has been identified as a site for a previously unknown ice-free refuge for salmon during the Ice Age. Researchers said the isolated marine haven would help explain the “genetic mosaic” of British and Irish salmon. They added that fish from this refuge bred with fish from the Iberian peninsula as they migrated into UK waters as the ice receded. The findings have been published in the journal Heredity

Eamonn Checks Out Nymphing in Monaghan

A Lovely Wild Brown Trout from the Monaghan Blackwater
A Lovely Wild Brown Trout from the Monaghan Blackwater

Milder weather and higher temperatures over the weekend brought angling guide Eamonn Conway back on to the rivers of the north east in search of wild brown trout. Although Eamonn reports that there were some rain showers it was mainly dry during his visit to the Monaghan Blackwater. On this occasion Eamonn reports that the water was in good order and almost perfectly clear. There were good hatches of olives throughout the day but very few trout were taking the dry fly. Eamonn tried wet flies as well but although the trout were hitting them they were missing them a lot. Eamonn eventually settled on his trusty nymphs which produced excellent sport for him throughout the day. If the weather keeps improving at its current pace, Eamonn reckons that the trout will be coming to the dry fly very shortly.

Arrest warrant out for angler, Irish Examiner

An arrest warrant has been issued for an angler who threatened to stone fisheries officers after being caught fishing illegally. Oliver Breen, from Dunfanaghy, Co Donegal, was caught by inland fisheries officers using illegal equipment on the River Ray in Falcarragh onjun 24. When challenged by officer Cortnac Goulding, Mr Breen gave a false name and then refused to hand over his fishing rod. After a struggle the rod snapped and Mr Breen waded across the river away from officers…

The March Lite Lines competiton that was in April !

Well the March competition wasn’t actually held in March….it was held in April!!!

For one of the first times ever, a light lines competition was cancelled because of the weather. ‘I thought Cork Harbour was an all-weather venue?’ I hear you say. Well it is….but the worst gales to affect the harbour are those from the east or southeast quadrant….and so it was on the week ending the 24th March we had a humdinger from the south east. In fact, the wind had been blowing hard from the east for weeks and on the Friday of that weekend a storm passed through that dumped one month’s worth of rain within a 24 hour period in the region. This was the same storm that, as it tracked northwards, dumped a couple of feet of snow in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, north Wales, and the north west of England. Strong enough as the winds were the boats may have still got out but with that volume of fresh water in the system the fishing was bound to be crap….and so the decision was, regrettably, taken to cancel.

The rescheduled competition was earmarked for Sunday 7th April. Conditions leading upto the day had improved dramatically….but then it all went downhill. That morning a gale kicked up and again from the southeast. At least there had been no rain leading up to the day and it was decided to carry on with the event.

Boy the wind was strong….and as the 16 anglers headed out on the John Boy and the Naomh Cartha they were dramatically buffeted. However, once at anchor at ‘Deep Hole’ the boats settled down quickly and there was no discomfort, as such. At this spot, just between the forts, there is no noticeable swell compared to the storm tossed seas outside. Nevertheless, the conditions did make for tough angling as, with the strength of the wind, many anglers complained that they could barely feel the ‘bites,’ if at all….and this was reflected in the fishing with numbers of fish caught well down on previous competitions. But you know what they say ‘….when the going gets tough, the tough get going.’

A total of 282 fish were caught with the breakdown being as follows: 236 whiting, 41 dab, 4 cod, and 1 plaice. Most successful baits were again mackeral and lug.

The final results were:

1. John Dennehy,           40 fish,   558 pts, 100.0%
2. Pat O’Shea,               32 fish,   457 pts, 100.0%
3. Pat Wright,                27 fish,   406 pts,   88.8%
4. Martin Perryman,       26 fish,   376 pts,   67.4%
5. John Fitz,                   21 fish,   301 pts,   65.9%
6. Donnacha O’Connell, 26 fish,   362 pts,   64.9%
7. Pat Condon,              18 fish,   273 pts,   59.7%
8. Shane Gilvarry,          17 fish,   249 pts,   54.5%
9. Roy Kearney,            21 fish,   299 pts,   53.6%
10. Josie Barrett,             20 fish,   288 pts,   51.6%
11. Robert Fraczek,        12 fish,   180 pts,   39.4%
12. Danny Kane,             12 fish,   188 pts,   33.7%
13. Tomasz Kyowe,          5 fish,     76 pts,   13.6%
14. Dermot O’Brien,          3 fish,     50 pts,   10.9%
15. Danny Kilcannon,        2 fish,     37 pts,     8.1%
16. Sandra O’Shea,           0 fish,       0 pts,     0.0%

This sets the league table up nicely for the last event which takes place on Sunday 21st April. The top 10 places now are:

1. Pat O’Shea,                  14pts
2. Pat Wright,                   18 pts
3. John Dennehy,              18 pts
4. Martin Perryman,          24 pts
5. Danny Kane,                33 pts
6. Sandra O’Shea,            35 pts
7. Martin Kennedy,           38 pts
8. Donnacha O’Connell,    44 pts
9. John Fitz,                      44 pts
10. Sylwester Skowronski, 46 pts

Richie checks out the action on the Erne Estuary

Guide Richie Johnston with Erne Estuary Sea Trout
Guide Richie Johnston with Erne Estuary Sea Trout

Guide Richie Johnston of Guide Fishing Ireland reports:

21/04/13: Spent a couple of days with Johnny Reddin in Ballyshannon, famous for its wonderful sea trout fishing on the Erne estuary. We fished in some of the stormiest weather I was ever out in. Local IFI fishery officers Michael Patton and Lindsey Clarke were our hosts, while filming some promotional films about sea trout. First we tried sand-eels, free-lined from the boat. The lads really know the area well, and it was not long before we had some action. Johnny was first in, with a fish of about 1 lb. He was only back out and was into a 2nd fish, which threw the hooks at the boat.

Michael Patton and Johnny Reddin with Erne Estuary Sea Trout

We then went to a local beach and fly fished with sand-eel patterns. The crystal clear water is teeming with fry and sand-eels and the sea trout can chase you right up to your feet. We also persisted with the fly when back in the boat. In the end we landed 4 sea trout and lost quite a few others too. The best fish were touching 2.5lb.. Michael was astonished we didn’t hit a bigger fish as these regularly turn up to over 4lb.

Day 2 was a washout, with even bigger winds. We fished a few hours from the boat and managed to hook a couple of decent fish, but landed none. Ballyshannon is a wonderful venue to fish, there is so much variety in the fishing available. A special estuary licence is needed along with the state one. In the end we got some great footage and I will certainly be back again.

Three generation out fishing, with little Noah catching his first fish

Noah Johnston and his Granddad with Noah's first fish
Noah Johnston and his Granddad with Noah's first fish

Guide Richie Johnston had a very important customer out fishing with him lately….his little son Noah, who is certainly following in his Dad’s footsteps.  Richie tells us:

Over the last couple of weeks there has not been many opportunities to get out fishing what with the high winds and cold weather.  A week or so ago, we took advantage of one of the calmer days to introduce my son Noah to his first day out fishing. Along with his grandfather we took Noah out on a local trout fishery. He has been practicing his casting already on the grass, with a 3 ft fly rod top and a length of fly line.

On the water he was very determined and with the help of Grandad he eventually hooked a fish. The trout pulled him all over, and it was eventually netted after a great scrap. Only 2 and a half, the trout was possibly older than him!!

Noah loved the whole thing, and after a few pictures we returned the fish. It was about 3 lb and he has not stopped talking about it since. Grandad was quite pleased too.

Erriff Fishery is off the mark!

Conor O'Leary with his fine 11.25lbs spring salmon, the first Erriff fish of 2013
Conor O'Leary with his fine 11.25lbs spring salmon, the first Erriff fish of 2013

There was no angling on the Erriff until the weather changed at the weekend. Following heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday, the river had been in a spate at 2.5 meters, and the levels dropped to a fishable height at the weekend.

Conor O’Leary, from Dublin, who had been trying for the first salmon of the season for a number of years, finally succeeded and caught the first fish of the season in the Gauge Pool on Beat 9 on Saturday the 20th. The fish weighing 11.25lbs was caught on a Yellow & Black Shrimp pattern that Connor dressed himself. Another angler had hooked and lost a good fish on Beat 4 the previous day.

Donavin Brinklow caught 12 brown trout on wet fly in an afternoon session on Tawnyard Lough, and Delphi Rods accounted for 4 brown trout as well.

With the weather set to continue unsettled for the remainder of this week, water levels should keep the river in good condition for flyfishing, and prospects for a springer are good. To book fishing contact Jim at Aasleagh Lodge on 095 42252, or email erriff.fish@iol.ie

Higher water levels and 10 salmon caught at Delphi

Michael Wymes
Michael Wymes

Fishery manager David McEvoy reports from Delphi 20/04/2013:

It’s hard to believe that in the last 7 days we have had 142mms(5.6”) of rain. This is actually more than the total rainfall for February or March. This week the system was almost unfishable some days due to extremely high water, which considering the last two months is a welcome change. It also appears that fish have been running.

Since my last update Michael Roden was the first to bag a fish with one off the Meadow pool on a Delphi Collie of 8lbs 5ozs on Tuesday. Not to be outdone his fishing partner Guy Hollis then landed a fish of  approx. 6lbs also on a Delphi Collie from Morrisons.

We drew a blank then till yesterday when we had 5.  David Dunne had 2, one off Doolough of approx. 13lbs on a Black and Yellow tube and then one from the Rock pool of 11lbs10ozs on a Willie Gunn.

David Dunne with his catch from Delphi
David Dunne with his catch from Delphi

The Wymes family had 3, one of 10lbs11ozs on a Willie Gunn from the Rock pool and two from Finlough, one of 9lbs12.5ozs and the other approx.9lbs, both on a Yellow shrimp fly.

So far today the Wymes family have accounted for three more all off Finlough, one of 6lbs12ozs and the others of approx. 8lbs and 9lbs. They took a Posh Sunday, a Yellow shrimp and a Red Frances.

That now brings our total for the year to 34. With the excellent conditions we have at the minute I’d be hoping that the recent trend will continue.
