No hullabaloo at coarse match at Gulladoo

Derek Gibbons of Cavan Coarse Angling Club reports that a few anglers from Belturbet AC, Cavan CAC, Gowna Match Group and some visiting UK lads held a knock up yesterday on Gulladoo Lake. It was a tough day with the fish hard to hit, bites being very finicky. Weather was brutal at times  with sunshine, rain, hail and high winds at various stages during the 5 hour match. Some lads had a poor catch and only caught a few but in general there were no actual blanks, despite some lads not weighing at all.

Results were as follows:

  • 1st. Paul Leese – 8lb 4ozs
  • 2nd. Nigel Holdsworth – 5lbs 10ozs
  • 3rd. Derek Gibbons – 4lbs 5ozs
  • 4th. Stuart – 4lb 3ozs

15 anglers fished and top 4 places paid out.

Top weight at Oaklands yesterday was 64 lb
Top weight at Oaklands yesterday was 64 lb

Adrian Browne reports that all sorts weather was heaped upon the 22 anglers who fished Sunday’s match at Oaklands. Heavy rain, gale force winds and bright sun shine are not perfect fishing conditions some but good weights were made up. The top end of the lake produced the bigger weights with first and second coming from pegs 28 & 27. Pellet, waggler and shallow pole were the best methods.

Spring salmon fishing goes up a gear on the Slaney

Brian Stevens, Slaney River Trust reports on that salmon fishing is going well on the Slaney

The last week has seen fish caught from Kildavin to Enniscorthy bridge as the river as fined down after the flood and water temperate has started to rise. Anglers in the Kildavin area report that the first fish of the season was landed today but that very few fish are to be seen. Lower down the Enniscorthy stretch reported 3 fish caught and a number lost.

Three anglers had 2 fish on the same day this weekend Tiernan Sludds (Enniscorthy), David Dobbs (Clohamon),  and an unnamed angler on Clobeman who had a 14 and 15lber.

Time to change tactics?

As the river warms up and the levels drop it may be time to change over from big heavy weighted flies to smaller flies with floating or slow sinking  lines. The week started with big Willie Gunns doing the business and by Sunday size 6 yellow shrimps and the like were successful as showed by a very happy looking Paddy Syme who had 11lb sealiced fish.

Anglers are reminded that with the exception of the Enniscorthy anglers water below the old bridge where black flying Cs have been doing well, the river has a fly only rule which IFI are actively policing.

The boys opened a can of worms, Irish Examiner

THE easterly gales of the last few weeks drove millions of marine creatures ashore. The shells of molluscs and crustaceans were strewn along the tide-line at Malahide. Gulls gathered to feed on the spoils. Whelks, razor-shells and cockles, their bright orange ‘feet’ protruding, were especially abundant. Tommy Collins, aged five, and his little brother, Liam, on a shell-collecting spree, encountered what seemed to be a giant millipede, alive among the debris. The creature, over a third of a metre long and as thick as a man’s thumb, had hundreds of little legs along its body. On being handled, it burrowed powerfully into the sand…

Shannon water campaigners could take their case to Europe, Limerick Leader

CAMPAIGNERS opposed to plans by Dublin City Council to extract water from Lough Derg to shore up the capital’s dwindling water supply could take their case to the European courts. Gerry Siney, chairman of the Limerick branch of the Shannon River Protection Alliance, said his group is examining the relevance of a European ruling on the Greek government’s failure to protect a lake and has been conferring with Irish MEPs on the matter…

River Suir recreational angling bylaw comes into effect for 2013, Irish Times

A NEW BYLAW for recreational angling on the River Suir has been signed into law. As and from April 12th, 2013, when fishing for salmon and sea trout (over 40cm), it is prohibited to use worms, prawn, shrimp or any other crustacean or artificial forms as bait and fish hooks, other than single barbless hooks, up to May 11th, 2013. From May 12th to September 30th the bylaw provides for a bag limit of five fish subject to a daily bag limit of one fish. Anglers must use a single barbless hook once their bag limit has been reached. The prohibition on the use of worms, prawn, shrimp or any other crustacean or artificial forms as bait, continues until the season ends…

It was a damp start to the fourth Lough Ree International Pike Angling Festival at Athlone but plenty of fireworks across the three day boat angling tournament.

There were 165 anglers on a total of 83 boats dashing about the fish-filled waters and where they caught 18 pike measured between 100 and a staggering 113.5 specimen that probably weighed 28lb or so.

All boats launched from Coosan Point but angling on Wednesday was restricted to the Inner lakes due to high winds but Maurice McCaffery (Sligo) led the assault with a winning 107cm pike.

Conditions got better for Thursday’s assault and most crews set sail for the open water of Lough Ree. Sport picked up well and the overall size of fish improved, as shown by Sligo’s Mark Hughes (Sligo) winner of 109cm, which earned him the €1000 top daily prize plus €150 for a 96cm pike that was 10th on the day.

Friday was the ‘pike bonanza’ and a string of specimen pike, topped by a superb 113.3cm fish (probably about 28lb) caught by local expert Dermot Sammon (Athlone) who won €3000 for the biggest fish of the festival.

Altogether there was €20,000 paid out in prizes.

Big mullet move into Cork Harbour, fish to 7lb 5oz reported

Myles Kelly with his 7lb 5oz mullet - a great start to the season

Sea temperatures are still low for the time of year and are hovering below 10C. This has made for difficult fishing in Cork Harbour where pollack and bass fishing has been very slow. The change in weather has seen fortunes for mullet anglers improve and Myles Kelly got his first of the season in one of the Harbour’s tidal creeks yesterday afternoon.

Stalking a number of good fish for a frustrating couple of hours finally paid dividends when one hit the bread flake bait and took off on a long run. On light tackle the fish proved a difficult opponent and after some heart stopping moments the fish was finally played out and safely netted.

Local angling guide Richie Ryan was in the area and was on hand to weigh and photograph the fish which came in at 7lb 5oz. Richie is no stranger to good mullet and has been on the look out for the shoals which vanished after his last outing to West Cork when specimen sized fish also made an appearance.
