Two youths from the Coosan & District Anglers Association are off to France on July 4 as part of a six-strong Irish team to compete at the 2012 World Youth Fly Fishing Championships.
The competition will take place in the Lozere region in the south of France, and locals Fergal McKiernan (from Coosan), and Sean Dempsey (from Ballykeeran) have been practising hard over the last year for this event. Both are accomplished anglers and have been representing Ireland consistently over the last four years. Indeed, the two 17-year-olds are both former All-Ireland fly fishing champions.

July 4th: The river was out of order on Monday (2nd) & no rods fished. Yesterday, it was still high & a wet day, but 3 of our local rods went to do some bank clearing at Ballyhooly (2 on strimmers & 1 with a rod alternating.) Apart from doing a great grass cutting job they managed to catch 3 fish on spinner. James Hill had these two of 3.7 & 5.7lb & Christopher Whelan released one about 5lb. The clarity of the water was only about 1 foot. James Hill with two salmon weighing 3.7lb & 5.7lb
Today, Tim Harty & Steven Slattery from Co. Limerick fished Ballyhooly & caught 5 fish on spinner between the two of them for the day. Steven released 3 fish of 12, 8 & 3lb & Tim killed a 9.5lb (bleeding) & released a 6lb. The clarity of the water there at the end of the day was around 3 feet.
Surprisingly (considering the showers), both the upper & lower river are dropping slowly but steadily since yesterday & the water is fining off nicely.
By 19.00 this evening the gauge in Ballyduff was on 1.20m with clarity 1 1/2 – 2 feet.
There’s a bit more rain for Friday night but then it looks to be drier through the weekend & into next week. Ian & Glenda Powell Blackwater Lodge & Salmon Fishery

Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan was out bass fishing recently with World Champion Power
Lifter Victor Patterson .He was joined by his wife Della . From the outset there was serious pressure on Richie because as the 2 Americans boarded the boat they announced their boat was bigger and that Victor had never blanked on a fishing trip in his life ! Considering the awful conditions, brown harbour water, they were very lucky to hook up a bass of nearly 4 lbs. The lure used was a Megabass X 140 and the couple went home happy. If you want to book with Richie then see www.corkbass.com or http://eirebass.blogspot.ie/
July 1st: We have just achieved our fiftieth fish of the season. A small fish of just 1.75lb from Tullywee Bridge Pool! For the fishery to have achieved the same feat last year, we had to wait until the 31st July. This is a clear indication of a strong grilse run and good spring run. It feels like we have had another four weeks added to our season. If this is the case then we should well clear last year’s total of 137 providing weather conditions remain conducive.
We have just finished June on a high with 43 salmon for the month. The average for June over the past ten years has been a mere 11 fish with the best year, 2002, 27 salmon and 2010 just one fish.
The average weight of the first fifty fish tallies in at 5.75 lb against 5.25lb last year which is clearly evident in the shape of the majority of the fish. Fine deep well fed specimens.
Sea Trout runs really only started a week ago and so far with all our anglers fishing the river, we have only managed to secure eight fish into our register. Last week last year we had 76 Sea Trout for the week, this year just two. This is reflected by the angling effort last year with boats out nearly every day and good Sea Trout anglers occupying the same.
As I mentioned above… we have an extra four weeks added to our season, let’s make the most of it.
Lunch pool Kylemore Fishery
July 3rd: We can all relax… the Sea Trout have arrived in great numbers, great sizes and in good plump condition.
July 5th: Another cracking day yesterday. Five rod days five fish!
Sixteen year old Gabriel Coulter landed his first ever salmon of 4.5lb from the Lower River and Lee Bunting visiting from Belfast landed his first Kylemore fish for his first visit to Kylemore at 5lb. Lee landed a further fish similar in size later in the day. Richard Stephens started his Kylemore Account with another fish of 5lb from the Middle River.
Great numbers of Sea Trout entering so if we get the conditions right for the lakes……..
Lough Acalla by John Devaney, IFI Ballymurray, Roscommon.
Lough Acalla
Fishing was good in Lough Acalla during the week. Connie Finnerty had some nice fishing using a Black Wolf fly. Justin Coen caught some fish during the week on a white caddis type fly.
Pallas Lake and the Camcor River by Martin Moffat, IFI Mullingar.
Pallas lake – Aiden Dunne from Rosenallis had three rainbow trout one weighing one and a half pounds and two at a pound weight and he caught them on a hawthorn fly.
Liam Bradley from Kinnity had one brown trout weighing 2.5 lb. caught on a black midge.
Liam Horgan from Portlaoise had two fish weighing 1.5 lb. each caught on a klinkhammer. Weather was mixed in Pallas.
Camcor River is still high and difficult to fish, Brendan McGarry from Banagher caught one Croneen trout 1.5 lb. on an invicta fly.
River Feale, Kerry – by Paddy Halpin, IFI Listowel
About 15 Salmon got for the week and we have only 2 names Tom Long from Limerick had a nice fish of 13 lb. while fishing the Tralee Club stretch of the River Feale and James Almann from Listowel had a fish of about 6 lb. while fishing the Finuge Stretch at the Dam at the moment water levels are gone too high for fishing see picture below taken in Listowel town at the back of the hotel.

Danny Meagher from Wexford heads out for a nights fishing and reports the following:
The first one was a seven hour session from 11pm – 6am which saw Barry, Pat and myself battle a lot of suspended weed for the whole session. We stubbornly would not give into the weed in our quest for our quarry. I landed an L.S.D first cast and a long lean bass a couple of casts later, both these by-catch took a liking to my frozen peeler crab presentation.
Unfortunately that was to be the only action we had for the rest of the session. Every cast the weed was engulfing the traces, dislodging grip leads and carrying lines down the beach at pace. It appeared the other anglers on the beach were experiencing similar difficulties with the weed, at one point we saw an angler running into the pounding surf around 5am, only to return with a rod and a tripod a few moments later, the weed nearly claiming his tackle!
Pat waiting to strike.
The second session saw Barry, Pat, Tom and myself put in 4 hours on a rising tide into dusk. Conditions were calm and clear with no swell or surf. Our chosen bait was frozen peeler crab mounted on pennel pully rigs (3/0-4/0) match to 5oz breakaway grip leads,
As expected the session started slow, with the sun nearing the horizon and the tide starting to push we were kept busy landing L.S.D.’s. before the pack moved in.
First cast an L.S.D.
Light faded and takes became more venomous, the pack was in the area as rods began arching over to the sound of us scrambling to adjust the drag. First the pup’s came before we started to connect with some larger fish.
The fishing was frantic for a couple of hours, with multiple hook ups at all distances. The frozen crab was doing the business and keeping the rods bent for sport.
We called it a night with the fishing was still frantic, we had our sport, around 50 + Hounds between 4 of us in around 2 hours made up for the first session!
Lough Graney – at a competition last Sunday on Lough Graney 26 Pike were caught – one of which was a 13 lb. This was a good result for the 30 anglers there – many of whom commented that the condition of the fish was excellent.
