No salmon on the River Fane this week but sea-trout are starting to run

Following on from the capture of two nice early fish on the River Fane last week Bernard Devenney reports that things have been quieter on the river this week. Bernard reports that water conditions are excellent at present and some nice sea-trout are starting to come into river, althoughthe main run does not arrive until mid July. Unfortunately, no salmon have been caught this week but some fresh run fish have been observed showing in river. The Fane is usually a late river and the main run will not normally arrive until August/September. However, with such good water in the river and more rain expected we anticipate some salmon will show up in river earlier than usual.

Regular visitor and pike spinn-angling enthusiast Marco Podesta from Italy once again visited Boyle for a pike angling trip. As usual he booked his trip with professional pike angling guide Bodo Funke (www.anglingservicesireland.com). Along with regular angling companion Marco A., he also for the first time  brought along his 12 year old son Edoardo. Their goal was for Edoardo to catch a big pike during this trip and after a slow start on the first day with only a few small pike caught, it was Edoardos lure that was engulfed by a big pike right beside the boat. The young angler played the fish quite expertly, with a little coaching from his father and guide Bodo. After a short but intense battle the fish was netted and quickly unhooked. The fish weighed exactly 20lbs and what a great achievement it was for the boy and his proud Dad.

The next day saw Dad Marco catch his fish of the trip, measuring 96cm and estimated at ~18lbs. it was a nice pike too.

Meanwhile their friend Marco also had his share of the fun, catching pike of 12 and 17lbs. that day. Marco was out in an additional boat with another Angling Services Ireland guide.

Many other smaller pike were also landed by the group during their short trip. They had come over on the new flight from Milano to Knock Ireland West airport, allowing them to conveniently fly from their home town in Italy right into the heart of some of Irelands best fishing grounds.

Drift the rougher ground and find the pollack says Terry

Berkley Firetails are the business
Berkley Firetails are the business

Terry Jackson tells us of the rewards gained when fishing in rough ground over pinnacles and ridges.  Drifting these areas for Pollack using a flowing trace on light boat gear such as a 12lb class teamed with a 7500 reel and 30lb braid gives good results.  He notes that when you’ve found a good spot, it’s always an excellent idea to mark it on your sat nav (if you have one!) Have a look at some of Terry’s photos and read his full article on http://www.eu.purefishing.com/rough-ground-fishing/

Great range of species taken on a tremendous day for Dutch anglers on Predator II

Happy Dutch angler
Happy Dutch angler

Last week Hamish Currie, Predator II, saw a group of Dutch anglers enjoy a range of species.  The weather was nice and a tremendous amount of Pollack was caught.  Catch and release, with only a few smaller ones taken for the table.  Spurdogs are still rampant in the deep water holes south of the Mull of Kintyre and of course the big predators are also in feeding on them as the picture shows.

First specimen smooth hound for John Millerick along with good range of species recorded on the Lisin 1 off Wicklow.

First Smoothy for John Mellerick

Kit Dunne Charter Skipper with Wicklow Boat Charters reports on the recent appearance of Smooth-Hounds off Wicklow and notably the first specimen onboard LISIN I for 2012. On a recent trip for Smooth-Hound they appeared in large numbers with 3 very near specimens and one specimen recorded. Des, Josie and Chris of the IFI, accompanied by a few avid Specimen hunters fished the Wicklow marks with great success on the 11th June 2012. After reports of Smoothies showing on the beaches and a couple taken on-board Lisin recently, the guys wanted to be first to hit the big one, and they were. Armed with plenty of Peller crab, fresh & frozen, they set off at 7am from Wicklow Harbour. The plan was to head South and fish the last of the Ebb tide down to slack water, then see the flood tide pick up, this would give us the best opportunity I felt.

We weren’t long fishing when a Smooth-Hound came on-board, at 5 lb he wasn’t a specimen but things were looking up. We caught Bull-Huss to 12lb, Ray of about 10lb, Tope up to 30lb and a few Gurnards and dogs of course. Among all of these prize fish came the only specimen of the day, after 3 near misses, John Millerick landed a fine Smooth-Hound clearly of specimen size, this was the big achievement of the day among 80 Hounds, 6 Tope, 5 Huss, 1 Ray, 2 Grunard and lots of Dogs.

Red eared slider turtle is surprise catch on Royal Canal at Mullingar.

Tony Masterson and Dermot Broughan with red eared slider turtle

Royal Canal report by by Dermot Broughan

Ballinafid lake:

Over the past week no anglers have been fishing the lake.

Royal Canal:

Anglers fishing the canal west of Mullingar have reported good Roach to 1lb. and Tench up to 3½.  Tony Masterson reported nice Tench fishing west of Mullingar and an unusual catch on Sunday evening. He caught a 30cm Red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), a species of semi-aquatic turtle native to the southern United States. The presence of the animal in an Irish canal is a matter of some concern. It is illegal to release any species that is not normally resident in Ireland into the wild, but an increase in the pet trade has meant that such introductions have become regrettably common.  This is a particular problem with turtles as they are small when bought but are often quite long lived and can attain considerable size.

Although this species is unlikely to become invasive in Ireland, IFI are concerned that introductions of this sort may have other negative effects. This species is omnivorous and will feed on a wide range of material including aquatic vegetation, insects, small fish, aquatic snails, small amphibians and carrion. The animal was caught several times over the space of three weeks in a canal that is managed as a fishery by IFI and Waterways Ireland and had been interfering with bait used by anglers. A secondary threat from the release of non-native species is the introduction of harmful pathogens which could have potentially devastating effects on native wildlife. Inland Fisheries Ireland’s position is that non-native species should never be released into the wild and that pet owners should act responsibly when dealing with unwanted pets.

The turtle has now been removed from the Royal Canal by Inland Fisheries Ireland and will be re-homed in the coming days in a suitable location.
