Allez la France, first salmon for French visitor at Delphi

Thierry Leverrier's First Ever
Thierry Leverrier's First Ever

Fishing has picked up a bit since my last update as we have landed another 7 fish.

Conditions have been difficult, with low water at the beginning of the week and then a deluge yesterday with 73.7mm or almost 3 inches. This finally put the river to 90 which is the first time since February it’s been that high.

Arthur Jardine from Scotland managed to land a fine fish of  approx. 10.5 lbs on Monday afternoon from the Quarry pool. The fish was taken on a Willie Gunn and was an old timer.

On Wednesday Kurt Roth managed to land 2 fresh grilse, one of  approx. 4.5lbs off the Turn pool on a Tummel Shrimp and the second off Finlough on a Laxa Blue of approx 2lbs. All this was done in the presence of his father who is now on his 20th year coming to Delphi.

Congratulations to Thierry Leverrier from France who managed to land his first ever salmon off Doolough. The fish weighed in at 5lbs4ozs and was fresh. His brother Pascal managed to land a brown trout of approx. 2.5lbs on Finlough.

Manfred Wolf managed to land a sea liced fish of approx. 4.5lbs on an Orange shrimp from the Deadman’s before the river started to rise yesterday morning.

So far today we have landed 2 fish. John Russell-Wells had one of approx. 7lbs off the Turn pool on a Thunder and Lightening and Kurt Roth had another fish off Finlough of 5lbs15ozs on a Collie Dog.

There were also quite a good number of fresh fish seen and lost this week which is very encouraging for the days to come.

This week was also a very humbling experience for David and Sarah Walmsley who blanked. This was in stark contrast to their haul of 11 fish this time last year.

Congratulations are also due to Deirdre Herbert who on a day trip to the Erriff managed to land her first ever last Monday.

The water is now running at 60 so we should have some nice water for a few days and hopefully plenty of fish also.

A 6lb salmon is the first fish after the flood on Munster Blackwater

Flooding on Blackwater 8th June 2012
Flooding on Blackwater 8th June 2012

Friday June 8th: The lower river is still rising, but should peak in the night. It was at 2.90m at 20.30. It will probably be unfishable until the beginning of the week. With drier weather in the coming week & a preview of what may happen with the Best Day of the Season on the 6th., prospects are superb for next week.

This was the Blackwater @ 20.30 Friday 8th June
This was the Blackwater @ 20.30 Friday 8th June

Sat June 9th: The river has fallen extremely quickly both upstream (1.97m @ killavullen at 22.45) & down here at Ballyduff where it is down to 1.40m @ 22.45.

Amazingly, the clarity is remarkable good at ~ 1½feet both up & downriver. I was amazed when I looked at it at 7pm this evening here, & had a phone call just after to say it was the same upriver & would be fishable tomorrow above in higher water spots.

Prospects must be superb for the coming week & rods/accommodation are available.

Sunday June 10th: The heavy rain is over. Next week will see drier weather but still rather broken with some heavier rain possibly later in the week around Thursday. The river has dropped quickly above & below. It is still high – up 50cm at Killavullen from the level it was at before the flood.   At Ballyduff, the gauge is on 1.15m this morning. The clarity above & down here is about 2 feet, which is excellent given the height of the water.

Prospects are superb for the coming week.

The first fish after the flood has already been reported from the upper river at 11.00! A very fresh fish ~6lb. on spinner for Garry O’Shea (Dungarvan) from Ballincurrig. The gauge at Ballyduff is at 1.00m at 12.15. Clarity about 2 feet. The clarity on the upper beats is ~3 feet already.

Yellow tailed jellyworms lured the Pollack

Pollack No 1
Pollack No 1

Welcome back to Rockhunter and here is his report from the Wexford region: Upon my return to Ireland after the holidays I was very keen to get out and catch something bigger than the small fish I got in the Aeolian Islands. So on Saturday afternoon I grabbed the lure fishing gear and headed to a bay which has a number of deep water marks where I had caught a few sizable pollock last year.

Pollack No 1
Pollack No 1

Although the bay was sheltered from the westerly wind the sea was still very choppy and the water rather coloured. I tried a couple of deep gulleys first without a bite. Then close to high tide I moved to the western end where there is a deeper embayment. I tried a range of soft plastics (Xlayers, Slug Gos, Wave worms, Senkos) and a few small metal lures but there was not a hint of a fish. I was almost going to pack up but had one last try with a yellow tailed jellyworm. I cast it out to sea, parallel to the side of the embayment. On the second cast I was hit by a strong fish which was pulling downwards – it had to be a pollock. It kept deep all the way in and fought strongly as I pulled it up. It was a 52 cm fish, weighing just over 3 lb.

I then tried the jellyworm in a deep gulley at my feet and a few casts later it was snatched by another strong fish. This stripped some line before I got it under control and fought well until I eased it on to the rocks. This was a larger chunkier pollock, 58 cm in length and weighed just over 4 lbs

A little later I had another pollock on the jellyworm from the same gulley. This was much the same size as the first at 52 cm.

Shortly afterwards a torrential rain shower started. I fished on a little longer but by 5.20 pm decided to pack up. So despite all the expensive SPs I got all the fish on the cheapest lure in my collection. A few years ago I got a packet of 12 of those yellow tailed jellyworms for about 3 euros!!!

River Fane Produces Some Quality Wild Brown Trout

Eamonn Photographs Another Beautifully Marked Wild Brown Trout from the River Fane
Eamonn Photographs Another Beautifully Marked Wild Brown Trout from the River Fane

Like most areas  throughout the country, the recent rains have put water levels well up in most rivers and the north east is no exception. Eamonn Conway reports that he had some nice fishing on the Fane up until the recent rain arrived taking fish on dry fly and nymphs fished New Zealand style. According to Eamonn it will take a few days for the water levels to drop off but expects good fishing again as soon as the water drops and clears. He expects some nice olive and sedge fishing over the next few weeks. Eamonn has sent some pictures of fish taken recently to give a flavour of the quality of fly fishing for wild brown trout that can be expected on the River Fane.

If you fancy a days guided trout, pike or salmon fly-fishing Eamonn can be contacted at [email protected]

Eamonn is also an APGAI-Ire casting instructor, so if you want to learn to fly fish or improve your casting technique why not drop him an email at the above address.

Super bream catch of 125 lb. reported in an east Clare lake by a Cambridge angler.

Mike Shoesmith with a 125 lb. of bream in an east clare lake.

Dorothy Minogue Landers from Clondanagh Cottage in East Clare reports:

Mark Shoesmith, from Cambridge, a  guest at Clondanagh Cottage with great bream catch in an East Clare Lake.  Mark caught total of 27 bream, on June 2nd… average weight 5lb.  Estimated bag weight 125 lb., his 2nd best catch ever in Ireland.

Mike Shoesmith, Cambridge, UK with a 125 lb. of bream in an east clare lake.

Mike was fishing with some friends and  swims were very heavily prebaited the night before.  Sweet corn, chopped worm and frozen red maggots (that are stored in the freezer at Clondanagh) were added to the crumb mix.  About 30 (tennis ball) sized balls were fed in the night before at dusk.  The anglers  were on the lake by 7am and started catching immediately.  All the bream were taken on red maggot.   Due to the weather conditions, the Lake completely switched off by midday.  At this lake, the use of  chest waders  was compulsory on the good bream swims!

Inquiry advises that safety gear is kept accessible – Irish Times

An inquiry into the drowning of three friends on a fishing trip has recommended that life jackets, personal flotation devices and fire extinguishers be stored in an accessible location that does not require crew to go below deck to get them in an emergency.

Wolfgang “Mike” Schmidt (70), Richard Harmon (69) and Wolfgang Schroder (62) drowned near Adrigole Harbour in Bantry Bay on August 16th, 2010, after they abandoned Mr Schmidt’s motor cruiser, Castaway, when a fire broke out on board.

Irish Angling Update – 07/06/12

Another photo of Stephen and his incredible smoothhound
Stephen Colgan and his 21lb 3oz smoothhound. A record breaking fish and Catch of the Week.

Anglers have enjoyed some super fishing in past week in Ireland just before the huge low pressure weather systems hit the country this week.  This has certainly changed things particularly for freshwater anglers in the next few days but I am sure salmon anglers won’t mind having some floods bringing bigger runs of salmon and sea trout into rivers and loughs throughout the country.

The mayfly season is coming to an end on most trout fisheries but there is some spent fishing on some loughs.  There was some wonderful fishing particularly in the evenings on Emy Lough in Co. Monaghan. A group of Ladies enjoyed the fly fishing in Lough Ashling near Edenderry.  Down south, there were reports of good trout fishing coming to the nymph and dry fly on the Suir and the Anner.  The midland trout loughs are fishing well and there was mesmerizing mayflies still hatching on Lough Sheelin.  On Lough Owel, Trout were feeding on fry, hard on the shallows.  Regular visitor, Bill Holmes had terrific trout fishing on Lough Ree fishing with angling guide, Marc O’Regan.  In the west, Lough Corrib was quieter after the Mayfly season.  Over on Lough Arrow, Murrough patterns were working on Lough Arrow, while dry Wulffs were producing trout on Conn and Cullin.  THE annual All-Ireland Trout Angling Competition for anglers with special needs took place at Loch an Dochais, near Kilcormac and anglers netted 35 trout on the day.  Up north, Buzzers and dry flies were best for the good rainbows at the Cashel Trout Fishery.

There were reports of some salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Slaney. A fine 12 lb. salmon was the highlight of improving salmon fishing on the Cork Blackwater at the Ballyvolane House Fishery. There was a good start to the week for two anglers catching salmon at Fort William Fishery. At Blackwater Lodge, a lovely 10.3 lb. fish for Jim Shanahan as the Munster Blackwater fishes well on all beats. On the River Lee, a total of 30 fish were caught in the past week.  There was some good fishing on the River Bandon also. There was plenty of salmon and sea trout action on Lough Currane.  Nearby, Bass angling guide, John Quinlan took his guests for a spot of fishing of sea trout on the River Inny during the close season for bass. There was great salmon fishing reported at the Galway Fishery.  Salmon fishing is improving on the Erriff and Kylemore Fishery and at Lough Inagh. Delphi needs the rain to raise the river and draw the springers and grilse into the system. Salmon were slow to take on Lough Beltra & Newport River this week.  It was a Red “letter week” for anglers on Carrowmore Lake where some incredible salmon fishing was enjoyed by many anglers.  It was also the best week so far on the River Moy where 242 fish were recorded for the week. 67salmon were reported on the Ballisodare River.

Young anglers enjoyed professional tuition on coarse angling at Brother’s Lake by members of IADA.  A group of Disabled Anglers had a great day on the River Barrow with the Carlow CAC.  A group of Belfast anglers from the Lazy River Cafe Cross Border had a match on the River Barrow with Carlow CAC.    Small fish dominated the latest Waterways Ireland NCFFI qualifier at Lough Bridget in Co. Clare. Coarse catches on Derg are down but bags to 50 lb. are still possible on the River Shannon at Portumna.  In the midlands, there was super tench fishing for parties of anglers from the UK and Belgium while fishing at a variety of waters near Melview Lodge in Longford.  David Warrington reports that the Cavan venues were producing good catches of bream.  His friend, John Rigney was fishing on venues in the Leitrim area searching for tench. Fishing on the lift method he secured 20 tench for 74 lb.

A group of American and French anglers enjoyed outstanding fly fishing for big Pike at several venues while fishing with angling guide Marc O’Regan.  Donal and Peadar O’Brien took nineteen Pike in a day in Co. Monaghan.  A group of Dublin Pike anglers recorded 30 pike to 19 lb. on a stretch on the River Shannon. Plenty of pike were taken on a great day out for junior pike anglers at Keady qualifier.  There was hard fighting pike for the two French anglers in Westmeath with the best fish weighing 26 lb.  Angling guide, Mick Flanagan reports great fishing for pike and some lovely perch on a number of midland venues.  Recently Pirate Pike Anglers from Trim spent a cracking weekend down the west, and the club members produced some good pike. Top Rod was Jason Keogh who rattled the scales with a fine pike of 22 lbs.

It was a wonderful week for sea angling and in Dublin Bay a group of small boat anglers who recorded 12 species in a day. Stephen Colgan was shore fishing on a Wexford beach last week and recorded a massive smoothhound of 21 lb. 3oz well over the Irish record. He tagged the fish and carefully returned it and other fish.  He wins our Catch of the Week for this great fish. There was also some great mullet reported at Arklow last week. It was a good weekend for Cork charter boats with catches of Mackerel, Cod and lots more to whet the appetite.  Boat Angling Ireland had a great event at the Commodore Hotel Cobh Meet 2012 and recorded a huge array of species over the last weekend. Specimen Ling along with a huge range of species were taken wreck fishing at Courtmacsherry. There was excellent pollack fishing for French guests fishing with angling guide John Quinlan in Kerry. Bill Ryan reported good wrasse fishing in his West Clare shore report along with great photos of fish and rigs. 16 species were recorded at the successful Belmullet Sea Angling Competition.  There is a great story of a Spurdog frenzy for a Donegal kayak angler. There was great weather, great fishing, specimens and tope galore on the charter boat Rosguill at Downings last week.  At nearby Lough Swilly plenty of tope were reported.  Over at Red Bay, skipper Hamish Currie reported that Skate were keeping spurdogs off the Red Bay feeding grounds but more packs were expected.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke
