Navan Anglers 5 Boyne Salmon 0

Tony Lyoness Releases his Salmon back to the River Boyne at Navan
The best fish recorded on the River Boyne was taken by Tony Lyoness from Navan who hooked and landed a fine 13lb fresh run fish (covered with sea lice) on a Flying C with a single barbless hook. This great shot of a salmon going back wins Tony Catch of the Week..

Recent reports about salmon fishing on the River Boyne at Navan have seen the salmon get the better of the anglers on many occasions over the last few weeks. However, things have changed over the last few days and 5 salmon have been taken in the Navan area with all of the fish being reported to have been over 10lbs in weight. The best fish recorded was taken by Tony Lyoness from Navan who hooked and landed a fine 13lb fresh run fish (covered with sea lice) on a Flying C with a single barbless hook. The fish was subdued after a twenty minute fight which included a number of heart stopping jumps. It was then photographed and well resuscitated to ensure that it had fully recuperated before being released. A number of salmon have been sighted showing in the River in the Navan area.

Bodo Funke, angling guide from Boyle tells us about his guiding angling trips over the last few days

Fri 11/05/12: May has arrived and finally the pike have become a bit more lively and active. On Tuesday, Barry Jackson from Scarborough, UK, was out on a guided pike trip with us and a days trolling lures yielded 12 pike for him and many more missed takes. Biggest pike of the day was 13.5lbs.

The next day I had Italian anglers, Ezio and Ivan out on the water for a half day (they only arrived that morning with the great new flight into Knock, Ireland West airport from Milano.
The half days fishing resulted in 14 nice pike coming to the boat, biggest pike 16lbs. all on cast lures.
Yesterday they were not so lucky, only boating a few fish but many big pike followed their lures to the boat or threw the hooks back.
Today, their first Big pike over the magic one meter was caught already, more soon…

Mon 14/05/12: In the last post I mentioned a one meter+ pike caught by the two Iatalian anglers Ezio and Ivan, well the big fish Ezio caught turns out to be the biggest pike landed by Angling Services Ireland guests (and staff!) this year so far. Ezio measured the big pike to be 114cm long! The fish took a Buster Jerk in perch colour.

Ivan also had a nice pike not far from the magic meter mark, that he caught on a jerk bait too.
After all the big pike the two anglers had follow their lures and missed takes from the day before, they surely deserved to catch some big pike.
Their last day brought a few more fish to ~90cm to the boat before they finished their short fishing holiday on Sunday.

Fun at Paddy Mac's Lake for all

FAW at Paddy's Mac's Lake, O'Briensbridge
FAW at Paddy's Mac's Lake, O'Briensbridge

Ciaran O’Keeffe from Ireland’s Coarse Fishing was out and about this weekend and tells us about the fun at Paddy’s Mac’s Lake:
On a weekend that brought the FA premiership to a dramatic finale for soccer fans all over the country, there were many other sports fans that opted for a quieter and more peaceful form of recreation, one where the roar of a highly charged football stadium was replaced with the gentle sound of moving water and the referees whistle was substituted by the birds singing in the trees, as Fisheries Awareness Week 2012 got underway across the nation.
Designed to promote recreational angling and conservation in Ireland, whether it be coarse, game or sea fishing, FAW has grown in popularity, with this year boasting an impressive 70 events spread across 22 counties throughout the week, running from 12th – 20th of May. This substantial undertaking made possible by the sterling work of Inland Fisheries Ireland with the support of numerous respective local angling clubs.
On Sunday the 13th of May I attended my local event at Paddy Macs Lake in O Briens Bridge, Co Clare, the theme of which was to promote and raise awareness of the joys of angling to the younger generation, following a school visit campaign by IFI amongst other initiatives to raise awareness of the occasion. The event included a live display tank of various freshwater fish species and insect life which are indigenous to Irish water systems with members of IFI on hand to share information and answer questions relating to fishing in Ireland. Angling demonstrations on feeder and pole fishing were also provided by members of Munster Coarse Anglers Club.

The day came to a close with the participating budding young anglers receiving medals for their attendance, having displayed a keen interest in the future of angling and conservation as a whole. I would recommend these events to anybody interested in the sport of fishing in Ireland and with the hope that many more will discover the pleasures of angling for many years to come.
A list of further upcoming events and additional information can be found at www.faw.ie.

Bieber preforms well in Delphi but others hit a bum note

While the rest of the country seems to have been awash with rain we seem to have escaped again! We did get some rain on and off during the week but the high point for the river this week has been 30 and believe me it looks like a massive flood compared to 0 or less.

Temperatures have been incredibly low for the time of year with day time values struggling to get into double figures. Added to this we have had NE winds most of the week.

However for all the doom and gloom on the weather we are still catching fish. We have had 3 since my last update, 2 on Tuesday and 1 Wednesday.

On Tuesday Paul Smyth finally got his Delphi fishing career back on track when he landed a 6lbs12ozs fish off the Turn Pool on a Shrimp fly. The fish was however seal damaged, the theory being that these fish are easier to catch; so before he’s really back on form he’ll have to catch a healthy fish!!

This was not the case for 16 year old Eoin Dunne who managed land his first ever on the fly. The fish was caught in the Turn Pool on a Cascade, weighed in at approx. 5lbs8ozs and was sea liced.

On Wednesday Bernd Bieber managed to land a fish in the Whin Pool of 9lbs4ozs on a Collie Dog. The river at this stage was 5.

Yesterday we drew a blank even though there were fish risen and seen, so hopefully today we’ll get back to catching fish.

Total for the year now stands at 62, which given the conditions is not bad.

The only thing moving on the Inny was the water, so off to the Correen Forde for the roach

Bream

John Cole reports from the Inny

8th May: The weather turned to cyclonic with thunder and lightening, now it has turned back to Northerly winds and low temperatures again.

Philip has headed home without ever seeing the Roach on the Inny, despite using the sounder up from Tommy’s they never saw a single Roach only Trout going for the mayfly.

Phil and Chris were heading off to Conny Beg when they bumped into Peter who advised them to aim for Correen Forde so they turned around and ended up having a great days sport on the Roach and Hybrids. They never took a keepnet and wished they had, both taking out over 50 Roach each. Nothing big just an average of 8oz but great fun after all of the other disappointments.

Peter cut a new swim on the Canal and raked it before prebaiting it for a couple of days. He then settled in for a session and caught two Tench around the 3lb mark along with a good bag of Roach.

10th May: Winds still in the North and bringing cold rain with some bright periods.

I spent they day building a donkey shed with Jimmy, it seemed a better idea that wasting my time fishing.

Peter and Chris headed off to Correen Forde yesterday where they spent a few hours catching Roach, Hybrids and Perch; they found the fish very obliging compared to the River Inny where the only thing moving is the water.

13th May: Peter had a good day down at Shannon Harbour on Friday with Tench and Bream in good numbers, he returned the smaller skimmers and just kept the bigger fish for the camera. His high hopes were dashed though when he failed to get anything at Turmonbarry or at Shannon Harbour yesterday after doing 150 miles.
The Devon boys are back again and are getting a few bits, but like everyone else they are struggling despite a lot of travelling between lakes, they will keep us informed.

Plenty of action and mixed weather for fishing around Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry

And a lovely sea trout for Julien too!
And a lovely sea trout for Julien too!

John Quinlan, bass angling guide reports on  bass fishing for clients at the Thatch Cottage near Cahersiveen in Co. Kerry.

13th May – Unseasonably cold conditions have prevailed which has made bass fishing very difficult at times.  Luca Montanari, a regular visitor from Italy caught some very nice pollock on the fly.  Nick Gough, Eddie Feakes and John Taylor fished very hard for several days in late April.  The bitterly cold weather and 9 metre swells made bass fishing virtually impossible.  We did however get some action with the brown trout on Derriana.

Graham Brooks and David Jervis fared a little better taking 9 bass on the fly even though the conditions hadn’t improved very much.  They also fished Lough Namona and Lough Cloonaghlin and caught large numbers of brown trout in spectacular surroundings.

On Sunday 29th April I had the pleasure of taking out a film crew from ‘Anglers View Media’.  Conditions were very difficult with biting easterly winds but we managed to catch a lovely bass of about 6lbs which was quite an achievement under the circumstances.

Julien Lajournade, Eric and Francois joined us for a few days bass fishing in early May.  The bass fishing has picked up a bit and we caught about 25 bass with the best being 70cm (approx. 7.5lbs).

One of our regular visitors Nick Rowe was also with us for a few days.  We had one very enjoyable session fly fishing for mullet where 6 were landed but many more were hooked and lost.  We also had about 10 bass.
