Colin Folan reports from Lough Inagh on a fabulous brown trout from the lake for visiting French angler Eric Tournaire.  Eric fished Lough Inagh on Sunday and decided to concentrate on the brown trout, as there has been little or no rain in the last few weeks.  Within 3 minutes of the first drift he hooked a cracking trout of 6-7lbs.  After a few photos the fish was returned and Eric was thinking that maybe he was in for a bonanza of a day.  Unfortunately it was the only fish of the day.

In common with other Connemara fisheries, Inagh has suffered from drought conditions lately, and the fresh rain this week may stir things up and get some fish moving.

Dry spell ends at Erriff

A prolonged dry spell was broken in earnest on Sunday night, and the River Erriff rose to 1.4 on the gauge on Monday, fining down to lovely fly water over the next 24 hours. Niall Wickham from Drogheda took full advantage, landing a 6lbs sea-liced salmon from the Coronation Pool on Beat 8. The fish took a Gold Willie Gunn tube fly. Niall also landed an early sea trout from the Bridge Pool on Beat 9.

There is good availability on the river and in Aasleagh Lodge over the next few weeks, contact fishery manager Jim  Stafford on 095 42252 for details, or check www.aasleaghlodge.ie . The fishery is also on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AasleaghLodge

Spring salmon fishing continuing at Galway Fishery

Strong northerly winds kept water levels slightly higher than usual, with a bit of colour in the water also caused by the wind on the shallow lower lake, but good runs of spring salmon continued through the week, and there were 16 salmon landed, with good numbers taken on the fly, and shrimp also doing well. Water levels have dropped now with the lighter winds, with one gate open and less water coming over the other gates.

Michael Rogers had a7lbs fish on fly, Eoin Dunne took a 9lbs fish on spinner and PJ O’Connor had a 6lbs fish on shrimp. German visitor Urs Leibundgut landed an 8.5lbs salmon on fly, and Frank Poland had a fine 11.5lbs fish on shrimp. John Hetherington took an 8.5lbs fish on shrimp, and Clifden angler Jasper Matthews had a lovely 11lbs fish on fly. Jon Menzies from Loughrea had a 10-pounder on shrimp, while Brian King had a 9.5lbs fish, also on shrimp, and Pat Kane took a 9.5lbs fish on fly. There were early grilse, or small springers, for James Doherty, who had a 6.5lbs fish on fly, and Fintan Murphy, who took a 6lbs fish on shrimp, while local angler Simon Lenihan had a lovely 11lbs fish on a Silver Stoat fly. The fish of the week was landed by Gerry Hartigan from Limerick, a fine 12lbs spring salmon taken on shrimp.

Lough Corrib is at a very low level now, and with no significant rain forecast, water levels should remain perfect for flyfishing, and with good numbers of spring salmon running the river, fishing prospects in Galway are very good for the coming weeks.

May 1st, 2012  The recent heavy rain has brought a number of good sized fresh fish into the system the largest we have heard of was an 18lber landed by Tom Tynan at Clohamon although he was probably out done by wexford angler Anthony Doran who had 4 fish on Sunday including one estimated at 15 – 16lbs with 2 over 10lbs! Most succesful flies were deep fished tubes.

The encouraging thing is that fish have been caught through out the system with a number landed at Kildavin including  Andy Kelly’s sealiced 10lber.  On the lower river catches were dissapointing especially at Enniscorthy bridge which has had very few fish as it seems that the fish that were holding back waiting for the flood.

Fishing should be good when todays dirty 3 ft flood clears. Please ensure all fish caught are returned as quickly as possible! Rember single barbless hooks only!

The Atlantic Salmon Federation has published an interesting item on surgically  implanting trackers into kelts on their way back to the sea on the Miramachi river building on the work  done here with Nore and Blackwater kelts.

Much closer to home a repeat offender illegal netsman has been sent to jail for 4 months for poaching at a sitting of the court in Dundalk.

May 9th, 2012  The past week has seen consistent high water on the system with the stock now spread around the river. While some anglers, this one included, have spent full days on the river without even seeing a fish on what should be productive water, others have been luckier with fresh fish up to 19lbs reported. It would seem that there are a fair number of bigger fish being caught with one fishery which fishes well in high water having 3 sealiced fish in the low / mid teens in 2 days along with a number of smaller fresh fish. Their anglers have been meeting fish most days.

Good mayfly fishing on Lough Corrib

Trout catches in the Corrnamona area were good during the early part of the week, with many fish over 3lbs being taken on the dapped natural.  Connla Geoghegan and Patsy Coyne had 7 fine fish with the best being over 3lbs. Tony and Gerry Walsh also had trout of 4 and 5lbs towards the end of the week, while relasing many in the 1lb to 1.5lb size range.  Swiss anglers, fishing out of Carraig had good fishing throughout the week, they reported that while they caught fish on wet and dry fly, the dap was the most productive. Cornamona & District Anglers ran their annual Wetfly Competition on Sunday with 20 anglers taking to the water, 12 fish were weighed in for a total of 20.77 lbs.  Peadar Breathnach came 1st with a beautiful trout just shy of 4.5lbs, Tom Sullivan was 2nd, also with one fish of 3.75lbs, Peter Curran took 3rd with 3 fish weighing close to 3lbs.  The best fish of the week must surely go to Declan Cooke who landed a superb spring salmon on a Golden Olive Stimulator pattern. Declan had a mighty fight on his hands, as it took him almost 2 hours to land the 12-pounder.  Many others have not been so lucky, with some losing whole casts of flies in salmon while trout fishing.

Frank Reilly reports from the Headford and Greenfield areas that while fishing had been generally good, Friday was the best day of the week.  Of some 25 anglers who were fishing over the bank holiday period, 49 fish were caught.  Some of the best catches included, Paul French from Dublin and David O’Conner from Trim, who landed 9 trout of 11.5lbs over two days fishing wet fly.  David Egan also recorded 9 fish, his best was a fine 4.25lbs trout caught on a dry fly. Brian McEntee & Patrick O’Loughlin had 5 trout averaging 1lb 10oz each.

Donal Connolly from Nonaim Lodge in Glann, Oughterard, also reports on some great fishing for his guests over the last 2 weeks. Hugh McLean and Paul Docherty from Letterkenny had 5 trout, best 1.75lbs on wetfly and dry fly, and lost a few more on Saturday 28th April. Hugh also had one trout on wetfly on Sunday 29th April in horrific conditions.

Marc and Katell Salaun from Brittany had 2 trout while dapping, and lost several more and moved fish on almost every drift. This was their first experience of dapping and in the very difficult conditions on Sunday they coped successfully, especially 14-year-old Katell who with 2 trout, out-fished her father – much to his delight! All fish on the 2 days were released to fight another day.

Donal had 12 on wetfly on Thursday 3rd May out with Marc Bennett, Brighton, averaging about 1.25lbs, with a few up to 1.5lbs, all great fighting fish for their size and all released. Marc also had 5 on Wednesday the 2nd, which were also released.

Newcomer to fishing, Colin Richardson, Dun Laoghaire and Brighton had 3 fish – all released –  on Wednesday and Thursday, one of which was on a dry fly. Over the last few days the bigger fish have started to show with a far bigger average size, Mark Sims from Lancashire had excellent fishing on Sunday with 5 trout caught in bright sunshine and mainly flat calm conditions, best was 3lbs, he also had a lovely 2lbs plus fish, the rest were in the 1.25lbs bracket, he also had 3 trout on Monday for 4lbs, all were released after a quick photo.

Seamus McBrearty, Ravensdale, Co. Louth, had 3 trout for 4.25lbs on the dap on Saturday, while Ciaran Gallagher, Killarney, had 2 trout on dry fly for 2.25lbs, on Monday. Young local anglers Paul Joyce and Liam Butler, Glann, had 2 trout on dry fly for 3.75lbs on Monday.

The Lagan continues to boil with plenty of fish recorded

Fresh from the Lagan
Fresh from the Lagan

The tail end of last week and the weekend saw plenty of fish recorded on all stretches of the River Lagan from Dromara to Belfast.  Mark Sloan fished the river on Thursday last and had plenty of well made fish to 38cm, the fish succumbing to a mix of olive and hawthorne flies.  The Dromore Anglers held their bank holiday weekend competition on Saturday 5th May with Warren Campbell gaining the honours while Stuarty Moore was second and Mathew Russell third.  Andrew Sloan reported over thirty fish on Sunday 6th in the  30cm to 36cm with a beauty of 43cm to crown his day.  Again the fish started on olives and then switched onto hawthorne and this is exceptional river trouting with a high average size.  This standard of fishing is likely to continue for the next couple of weeks as with the weather changing daily the fish aren’t getting the opportunity to gorge and sicken themselves on the blackfly.

Mayfly on Derg – greenfly, gnats take trout to 6lb, memories of the dapp

Gavin Mannix
Gavin Mannix, Enniskillen, is a regular visitor to Lough Derg. He had three fish but missed many many more... (manny, many, many more by all accounts!)

The weekend saw a turn about in fortunes for trout anglers on Lough Derg. There were some fine trout taken on dry flys by anglers blind drifting and covering  feeding fish. While much of what was landed on the Saturday fell to greenfly, spent gnat accounted for a good proportion of fish on the Sunday. Some boats found that sedges were also working well with one boat out of Fishermans Paradise in Scarriff taking 3 fish over 3lb on sedge on Saturday morning and another 7 fish on the drift between 5pm and 6pm on Sunday evening.

Many of the fish caught in the Scarriff Bay area were taken to the Mountshannon Hotel where local club members weighed, measured and sampled the fish for an ongoing genetic study of the trout in Lough Derg.

Dapping in the pools of memory

Dapping on Lough Derg,  – Nenagh Guardian 1962… If you’d like to be one of the lucky ones and to know first hand the pleasures of fishing quite spots beyond the range of weekend crowds, Mountshannon provides just the answer. The big attraction is the dapping which this year  surpassed any experienced in this habitat of the May-fly exponent for many years.

The fact that the spacious hotel there, that accommodated the vast influx of dappers in the years gone by, has for some time been converted into a private  nursing home, in no way daunted  residents of this picturesque village, whose private  dwellings and business premises answered the call, when an occasion such as the dapping arose.

Enquiries at several of these premises during the past week elicited the joyful news that both dapping and business soared to heights reminiscent of the good old days. Miss T. Lynch (an experienced dapper) whose guests include a Mr Holt and a party from Nottingham, informed me that the dap this year was really wonderful and attributes the angling rejuvenation to its confirming more with the old days, when dapping usually opened in or about May 10th. Her guests had 40 trout caught up to Wednesday, in less than a week’s fishing.  Some days were unfishable due to rough weather, but returns on  other days  generally averaged 6 to 14 trout. Apart from a number of big trout the average weight  was from 1 ½  to 3 lbs.

Jack Woods’ catch of 12 trout in one drift subscribes in no uncertain way to the opinion generally expressed that the dap this season is definitely  reminiscent of the old days.

Festival of Fires, pike spinners and small perch

Perch
Bill Demery with one of 4 perch

Bill Demery contacted us with this report of his recent angling trip.

“If anyone knows what I am talking about the ‘Festival of the Fires’ was on in Westmeath on Saturday 5th May.

So when we left the following morning we decided to explore the area we were going to fly fish on one of the lakes but we didn’t have a boat with us so we decided to fish for perch, pike, or anything else that would take a spinner.

Perch
Bill Demery with one of 4 perch

Between the N4 and lough Iron we had a quick session of fishing with four small perch on a small spinner, we were expecting a jack pike to take after a fairly successful trip there last month with 6 pike sizing about 1 3/4 lb, but nothing this time.

As we got to where the Inny flows into lough Iron we saw lots of rises, we cast over them several times without a bite so they were probably roach or rudd, then just as we started to pack up there was a huge splash!, this was no simple rise and it was right at the weed bank, just the spot for a pike! we had an appropriate lure for a large pike but we couldn’t get at her because it was behind a big clump of reeds sticking out of the water (and she was probably full by then anyway!)

but that doesn’t mean it didn’t move so I will hopefully go for it sometime next week.”

Funding boost may rid city of ‘eyesore’ bridge – Galway City Tribune

The ongoing funding saga of the ‘eyesore’ Fisheries Tower footbridge took a positive turn this week when the Lough Corrib Board of Trustees agreed to allocate €50,000 towards the cost of replacing the bridge.

The future of the project was threatened after Failte Ireland refused to fund the footbridge linking Wolf Tone Bridge with Fisheries Tower following seven applications.

Chairman of the Lough Corrib Navigation Board of Trustees, City Councillor Pádraig Conneely has confirmed that the Trustees of the board have agreed to put money into the project…….The Galway City Tribune…..04/05/12…..read full article….
