Weather is playing havoc with fishing on Sheelin

The weather is playing havoc with the fishing on Lough Sheelin which is disappointing considering that we are fast approaching what would be considered controversially as the ‘most exciting’ fishing time in the angling calendar on this lake – the Mayfly season.

The first mayfly has officially been sighted on the lake but the numbers are mere handfuls spotted around Crover, Chambers and the Stoney islands from last Friday onwards but its early days and the weather is not tempting to this special fly.

On a number of days last week the only action on the lake was the welcome return of the swallows skimming the water for flies down on the Crover shore.

Bitter easterly winds swept the lake during the week particularly on Sunday when it was felt with certainty that there was ‘ice in the wind’, frosts on most nights with temperatures dipping below zero and showers of hail all added up to seriously challenging fishing conditions.  But despite all this Sheelin’s anglers soldiered on and some nice catches were reported.

There were good hatches of olives and also of buzzer particularly in Corru.  In general it was noticed that trout rose maybe once or twice and then that was that. Again it was a battle against the wind with the boatman usually unable to fish as his time was spent directing the boat and continually trying to turn into a sheltered area.

Last week it was the cold that dictated the length of time anglers stayed out on the lake and even the ‘die hards’ were forced to return to the shore after relatively short periods of fishing.

The popular Sheelin Classic trout competition now in its 8th year will be run on Lough Sheelin on Sunday June 10th 2012 – 11am to 6pm.  There will be a 15” size limit and only 2 fish per competitor.  This competition will involve an open draw for partners and entries must be in by June 1st.  Entry fee is €65 for a boating angler and €85 for non boating, the number of boating anglers will determine the number of non boating anglers

There will be numerous prizes which include:

1st 19ft Sheelin boat & trailer & crystal

2nd 5 hp 4 stroke outboard engine & crystal

3rd €54 & electric engine & crystal

A catch and release policy is actively encouraged on this lake.

26 fish were recorded for the week with the best trout of 5lbs caught by Gary McKiernan, Cavan using a dry buzzer on tuesday April 24th in the Bog Bay area of the lake, Gary also caught a nice 3½ lb trout on Monday also using a dry buzzer.  Both fish were in excellent condition and returned unharmed to the water.

Other catches recorded were:

Peter McArdle, Dundalk – Saturday April 28th using a balling buzzer 2 trout at 1½ and 1¼ lbs.

Gary McKiernan, Cavan – on April 23rd and 24th 3 trout averaging 1¾ lbs using a dry buzzer, all caught around mid day in the Bog Bay area of the lake.

McArdle, Belfast – 1 trout at 4 lbs at the weekend, wet fly fishing.

Jack Imiling, Belgium – fishing on Kinale, Mr Imiling landed a beautiful 6lb 2oz trout on Sunday April 29th, perhaps this one strayed out of Sheelin?

Michael Kelly, Dublin – using a dry buzzer 2 wild trout at 1½ and 3lbs in Corru on Friday April 27th, Saturday April 28th using wet flies 2 trout at 1 and 2lbs, both wild and in excellent condition, Sunday April 29th 4 trout best weighed in at 2½ lbs, fishing the bottom section of the lake.

A fine 6lb Bass from a favourite shore spot in Cork Harbour

Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan decided to do a shore run last week as he heard that bass were now in Cork Harbour.

He went to one of his favourite shore spots and managed this fine bass of approx 6lbs which was returned safely.

Richie considered it early for this mark to produce such a fine fish . He mused that it might have been the early warm Spring weather in March which helped .

Drumshandra throws up some nice nets of Roach

Most lakes in the Upper Shannon are fishing well. Lough Allen does better in the evenings. Cogar has some nice tench and bream, with a few 10 lb bream being caught at night. Two visiting English anglers to Lowfield on Tully lake near Killmore and two Dublin anglers were pleased with their catch there this week. Lough Nahincha on the Hillstreet system and Gortermone lake has started to fish well with some prebaiting

Most of the rivers are throwing up some nice nets of roach with the river at Drumshandra on the left side down stream full of roach, mainly in the evening. Some nice 50 lb nets there during the week !

Youths do us proud in the Inter-provincial league

The Leitrim youths coarse fishing club to my knowledge is the only youth club in the country committed to youth coarse fishing in ireland they are a NCFFI club. One of its members Josh Kelly is on the celtic cup team that won the cup for Ireland last year. They have just finished their Spring league. The youths had to endured very cold and sometimes wet weather.
There are two age groups in the club; under 14 and under 18 which are coached by myself and with the help of parents the club is doing very well.
The Connacht under 18 league will be represented at the interprovincial in Cork on the 30 of June and the 1st of July is under way at the moment. the second of 6 matches will take place on Lough Allan this Saturday- meeting at 10 am sharp . The men’s team trials will start in the next two weeks. Any further info can be found on the Connacht face book page

Improving hatches of Mayfly bring better sport for trout anglers on Lough Arrow.

Lough Arrow

Jimmy Frazer reports that anglers took advantage of good mayfly hatches towards the end of the week on Arrow. Conditions were cold with strong northerly winds at times. Wet fly fishing was the best method, with some fish caught on the dapp.  Finian Dodd had a nice fish of 3 lb., while his son Colin had 4 fish with best fish 3.5 lb. Darrell Haslam had 3 fish of 1 – 1.5 lb. Martin Doherty from Donegal had 1 fish for 1 lb. 10 oz. Francie White had 3 fish weighing an average of 2 lb.  Ken Murray had 2 fish on the dap of 4 lb. and 2 lb.  David Frazer had one fish on the dap weighing 3 lb.

Peter Dunne from Drumshanbo had 3 fish last week weighing 4.5 lb. and 2 further fish of 3 lb., all on buzzer. Jean Anderson had 2 fish, one 4 lb. and the other 2 lb., taken on olive patterns. Paul McMenamin from Derry had 4 fish on wetfly.  His son Niall had 1 fish.  The heaviest was 2.5 lb.  Michael Gunning had 1 fish on the dap weighing 2 lb.

Fishing for the coming week looks promising with good hatches of may fly expected.

Good salmon early in the week on Carrowmore Lake before the gales spoiled the fishing.

Carrowmore Lake

Seamus Henry reports that Carrowmore Lake produced very good sport early in the week before the northerly gales blew up and spoiled fishing for the rest of the week. Brian Moore landed a 9 lb. salmon, and then caught and released another nice fish. Jim Ruane from Castlebar had a 9 lb. fish, and also caught and released a fine 12 lb. salmon. Matt Bateman had a fish of 9 lb., and Vincent Rigney took one of 7 lb.

Pat Foley caught and released 2 salmon, and Cavan angler Gene Brady had a 6 lb. fish, and released another one.  The following day Gene returned and had another 6lbs salmon. Andy Latimer from Enniskillen landed a nice 8 lb. fish and returned another, while Frank Hughes and Gerry Dooley from Dublin both had a fish of 8 lb. apiece. Larry Mitchell from Belmullet caught a 6 lb. salmon as well. From Wednesday the winds picked up and angling was curtailed on the lake by poor water clarity until the last day or two, and Seamus reports that fish are being caught again at the moment.

Great improvement in salmon fishing on the Ballisodare River with many of the fish released.

Ballisodare River

Dermot Glennon reports that excellent spring salmon fishing is reported from Ballisodare over the last 2 weeks. For the week from the 15th to 22nd 37 salmon were recorded, including 23 fish released. Among the anglers to land fish were local angler Paul McMahon, who took an 8.5 lb. fish, and Bill Clinton (not the former US president) who landed a fine 13 lb. fish on fly. Sean Maye took a 10 lb. fish on fly, while Paddy O’Loughlin landed a 9-pounder on worm.  Paul McGroary took a 10lb. fish on fly, while Tommy Donovan caught and released a 9 lb. fish taken on a Willie Gunn fly. Seam Maye caught another 9 lbs fish, which he released, while Trevor Goulding and Ray Cooper also caught and released salmon.

The week ending Sunday 29th saw 60 salmon landed, with 30 of those released. Michael Martin landed a 9 lb. fish on fly, while Dermot himself caught and released an 8-pounder on fly. Vinny Henry had a 6 lbs fish on fly, also released, and visiting angler M. Wymes had an 8 lbs fish on fly. Trevor Goulding tok a 10.5 lb. fish on fly, while visitor John Savage caught and released a 7 lb. salmon.

Other anglers to score were Denis Barrett, with an 8 lb. fish on fly, Paul Colreavy from Sligo, with a 6.5 lb. fish on fly, and local angler Stephen Moore, who had an 8 lb. fish on fly. D. Crawford landed an 8lbs fish on worm, while UK angler Andrew Pearson had a 9 lbs fish on fly, and Denis Quinn took an 8 lb. fish on the worm.

Dermot reports that water levels are starting to get a bit low now, and the average size of the fish is slightly smaller this week as a few early grilse start to appear among the springers. Given a drop of rain and with such a good run of fish at the moment, fishing prospects here are very good.
