Lovely water on the Munster Blackwater, but salmon slow to take

Blackwater Lodge

March 10: 13.00 a fine fresh fish ~10lb. lost on spinner after 5 minutes (reel problem). A few more fresh ones seen running through just below where it was hooked 10 minutes before, & 3 fresh fish seen running another beat as well. I also heard there were good fish moving through the tide at Cappoquin as well.
March 11: A couple of fresh fish seen, but none met.

Fort William Estate Fishery

12/03 Water levels are in perfect order for the time of year. .38m on the gauge and a ideal height for spring fishing on the fishery. At this level fish should certainly start slowing down. Over the weekend a few fish were showing themselves going through the Castle beat. Forecast for the coming week is good.

Mark Beattie and his second spring salmon of the season from the Salmon Capital of Ireland

Angling continues to improve on the River Moy, with a further three salmon reported. Upstream at IFI’s Cloongee Fishery, visiting angler Adrian Spooner, Co. Clare, landed a 10lbs salmon on a spinner. In Ballina town, upstream of the Weirs on the Ballina Salmon Anglers water, Martin Conroy had further success with a 10lbs springer taken on the worm, while Mark Beattie also caught another salmon, weighing 9.7lbs.

Two springers on Carrowmore Lake for the Foley brothers.

Carrowmore Lake produced a further two salmon over the past week. Brothers Declan and Frank Foley both had success on Sunday 11th, boating two fine spring salmon of 11lbs and 8lbs. The fish were taken on a Green Peter and a Claret Dabbler.

Angling continues to improve at Lough na Leibe with trout of 3lbs reported

Lough na Leibe is continuing to fish very well with good catches reported by anglers. Most of the fishing on the Lough was done on Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th March. On Friday, Bernard McDermott caught 6 trout including a well conditioned over wintered brown trout. Saturday saw the bulk of the action with many club members taking to the water. There were 25 reported fish, landed by 3 club anglers with additional catches also witnessed. Francis Brady banked 10 trout including one over wintered rainbow of approximately 3 lbs, Colm Walsh also had 10 trout including two good rainbows while Anthony Walsh caught 5 trout. Other anglers to catch on the day were Eddie Harte, Peter Walsh, Gerard McNelis and Darren McNelis. All of the reported fish were caught on the fly. The action on Saturday was attributed to a reasonable hatch of small duck fly. If you have a catch to report please e-mail it to the Club address, [email protected]. Successful fly patterns included small midge & nymph patterns and buzzers.

11 Trout along with numerous rises on a busy day in Wicklow

Downstream wet fly fishing in Co. Wicklow
Downstream wet fly fishing in Co. Wicklow

13th March 2012 There are day’s when you are reminded why you chose to go fishing, spring starts to show its face, the air is warm with just a little zephyr of a breeze, a hazy brightness fills the landscape, and trout dance with your flies, pulling and cavorting as you work down the runs. Low,almost to the bones my chosen stream diverted and sluiced between the boulders, trout sat in the back eddies waiting for morsels to drift by, and my spiders twitched irresistibly enough to lure a fish at regular intervals, a man couldn’t wish for more.

In his 1959 published treatise on angling “Fishing and Thinking” Dr. A. A. Luce, Professor of Moral Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin wrote of his best day on the river. Casting a line on the same stream almost 63 years to the day I couldn’t but feel a sense of deja vu. Commencing fishing around noon after having walked a step upstream I felt confident as my initial cast snaked across the stream, throwing a mend the flies worked along a seam whence simultaneously a boil and a tug signaled my first trout of the afternoon.

A little six ounce brownie, perfectly formed, yellow bellied, and brightly spotted, taken on a Greenwells spider it tricked and darted in the swift current not out gunned by my four weight wand, a nice start. Carefully wading down stream I placed my flies in runs between rocks, into back eddies, and through likely pockets searching out ambush points where a wily trout might lie up, the pool head runs being very productive

Making my way around a long meander I came across a nice riffle with a constant depth, casting my flies towards the far bank at a forty five degree angle, as they swung around BANG my best trout of the session took the coachman. At half a pound and in great condition the cake had been well and truly iced, time to call it a day. Eleven trout all returned along with numerous rises, a busy afternoon for sure. County Wicklow has some wonderful trout fishing in beautiful locations, the best of it found in the most out of the way places. You have to work for what you catch, but the rewards, a picture paints a thousand words….

Spring Cod for Cobh anglers.

George Stockley with his 8lb Spring Cod
George Stockley with his 8lb Spring Cod

The settled weather earlier this week prompted a few of Cobh SAC anglers to get out on the water. On-board Danny Kane’s boat, ‘Sandra Anne’, the lads had spring cod on their minds. Danny brought them to a closely guarded mark of his not far from Roches Point and they weren’t disappointed.

Over a three hour session the three anglers managed over four dozen healthy codling.

The best of the fish fell to veteran Cobh SAC angler, George Stockley, who managed this beauty of 8lbs. Indeed, George certainly out-fished the other two, a measure of his vast experience.

George just recently celebrated his 81st birthday and its great to see this well regarded angler enjoying his angling to the full!!!

The lads had the codling on various hokkai and Shamrock Tackle rigs, baited with mackeral.

Over the weekend well known angler, Jim Clohessey and Kevin Murphy of Bella Vista took one of the Bella Vista boats out for a spin and had some lovley cod on soft plastics.

Dries and buzzers do best at Cashel Trout Fishery

The lovely warm spring weather gives us all a great feeling of life. Derry anglers, Billy Hazlett and Alan Temple had a great day using dries and buzzers to bank eight trout each while father and son team Raymond and Niall Cassidy, also from Derry banked seven and eight respectively using black buzzers.

Why not take advantage of our catch and release special offer. Fish three days in a row at the weekend for just £30. Well done to all.
