Killybegs Mariners SAC league – the final leg!

The long and toughly contested Killybegs Mariners SAC shore league 2023/24 came to its conclusion at the weekend as 21 anglers lined up on the north side of Rossnowlagh for an expected night of good fishing.

The weather earlier in the day included glorious heat for the competitors, but the night session was more of an anti climax – with a wintery and drizzly westerly breeze that seemed to move the fish from this normally very productive venue out to deeper waters. This left many anglers frantically changing traces and trying a variety of baits but still unable to coax in a fish.

With more than half the anglers drawing a frustrating blank on the night, every single fish was a precious bonus for those lucky enough to get them.

Gavin Dorrian’s unassailable lead going into this final leg meant that he was already guaranteed championship top spot, but he still worked hard and managed to be one of the few to get a flounder of 32cm on the night and won himself the ‘longest flattie’ pool.

Meanwhile, John Cunningham, lying in second place overall going into this leg, consolidated his position by winning this outing with two flounders and a turbot.

In joint second on the night was Darren Rawdon, with two flounders, and Brendan Green with a smashing 40cm flounder – a fish of real quality on a night of generally poor quantity.

Finishing off the night was the ‘lucky peg’ and on this occasion it was Prionsias Doherty whose blank fishing night turned into a profitable one at the end.

It will be interesting to see the final league table positions when the scores are calculated to see who has managed to nip into the third place prize behind Gavin and John as the men that had been lying in 3rd & 4th place in the table respectively both blanked in this final outing, this may have left the door open for someone further down to pip them to the post…

All in all it was perhaps a disappointing finish to the league but it has been a fantastic season, and one of the closest fought ever. Everyone will be eagerly awaiting the kick off of the 2024/25 league next September…

Sea angling in Donegal

Lucky last cast by Liz bags Boylan clan a carp at Oaklands

Conor Boylan is originally from Monaghan, where he had no shortage of waters to fish for pike and trout in his younger days, regularly landing pike to 20lb+. He now lives in Wexford, where there are probably fewer freshwater options available to him, but he is lucky to be within a 15-minute drive from Oaklands Lake, where he now spends a fair bit of time, sometimes accompanied by family. He loves the fishery, as it caters to anglers of all levels and is very family-friendly.

Conor and his wife Liz, son Luke and Luke’s girlfriend Helena spent a day on the water at Oaklands on bank holiday Monday, and had a super day, catching loads of tench and roach. As the session was drawing to an end, he did the usual angler’s ritual of trying a lucky last cast. For a bit of extra luck, he got Liz to bait the hook up with sweetcorn and to lob the baited rig out into the lake for him. And the ritual paid off, as he landed his first carp of the day, a nice 2.5lb common, which Liz helped him to net. Liz had only been on spinning trips with Conor previously, but she’s no hooked on the coarse fishing buzz!

Conor is part of a new fishing society at his workplace, Kent Stainless, in Wexford and they plan a number of trips on freshwater and salt over the coming months, so we hope to hear a bit from them about their angling exploits.

Tench time for Iascaire club members

Members of the Iascaire Feeder Club took a break from the matches to do a bit of pleasure fishing for a change this week, with tench being the chosen species. Tench fishing really picks up in May and there is nothing like watching the surface fizz of feeding tench approaching your bait, as they root in the silt for tasty morsels on a warm, still evening in late spring.

The Iascaire guys chose their venue well, catching some great fish and plenty of them. With the fine weather due this weekend and mild, still evenings forecast, we expect that there will be plenty more tench caught by the start of next week!

May Day joy for Urs gets Erriff going for 2024

The Erriff Fishery opened in April, with very light angling pressure for most of the month. Several big floods early in the month brought in some fresh fish, but this was followed by a much drier second half, with low water prevailing. A flood on April 30th saw some angling interest, and the following day Urs Leibundgut landed the first fish of the season. Fiushing the Gauge Pool on Beat 9, Urs used a Cascade fly to tempt a fresh 10lbs wild fish to the net. The salmon was quickly released again to continue on its journey. May can be a good month on the Erriff if water conditions are right, and we look forward to reports of more fish soon.

The Erriff System is comprised of the Erriff River and the two small loughs of Tawnyard and Derrintin. The River Erriff is one of the premier salmon fishing rivers in Ireland. A spate river, it is characterised by lively streams and deep fish-holding pools. It has 8 miles of prime angling water, divided into 9 beats. Beats are un-crowded with only two rods on most and a maximum of 3 sometimes. Angling is rotated on a daily basis.

A couple of fresh fish in Galway get the season going

Water on a weir
Galway weir

April saw water levels remain high in Galway, with little angling until the last few days of the month, when the weir was closed down to 4 gates. The high water meant salmon ran straight through and all the way up to Cong, where 10-15 salmon were reported in the last week of the month by local anglers, with one reported to be around 20lbs. A 16lbs fish was also reported from Lough Corrib by an angler fishing wet duckfly patterns. No fish were recorded from the weir beat itself until the last day of the month, when Brian O’Rourke landed the first fish of the season, a nice fresh fish of 8.5lbs taken on shrimp.

May started on a better note, with water levels dropping to 4 gates on the weir. Local angler Fergal Cormican hit the jackpot with a cracking 16lbs fresh springer on the fly on the 6th. At time of writing 4 gates remained open, with more fresh fish being seen and improved prospects for May.

Tough couple of days for Tulla anglers at Templemore

Anthony Weir reports for the Tulla & District Angling Club with their latest coarse angling news…

Blacksticks 2 Dayer, Templemore, 05 & 06.05.2024.

After a late switch of venue, Templemore proved a bit of a challenge.  With excessive floating algae at the deeper end, Day 1 was fished in the shallows and most anglers struggled, with Anthony and Kevin putting a few fish together and a couple of Tench caught in the lower pegs.

Day 2 it was decided to brave the algae and fish the deeper end.  Although the algae made things tricky the weights were better  with Kevin Leahy winning ahead of Clive by one fish. Overall Kevin took home the trophy with 12lb 11oz; second Anthony with 11lb 12oz and  third to Clive  with 9lb 5oz.

Next competition is the Ryan Wright Memorial on May 19th at Ballinakill.

Major milestones for Irish coarse anglers in Spain – Double World Champions🏆

World Champions NCFFI Team Ireland

NCFFI Feeder Team Ireland win the World Championships and Individual Gold in Mérida, Spain.

Team Ireland smashed their way to the podium and are World Champions ten years on from the team’s silver medal finish on Inniscarra Lake, Co. Cork. In a double victory Michael Buchwalder achieved individual world championship status just two years on from his silver medal in Belgium 2022.

NCFFI Feeder Manager Brenton Sweeney’s squad, currently ranked 8th in the world includes anglers at the top of their game, Michael Buchwalder, Johnny McKinley, James O’Doherty, Charlie Richards and Rory Dunne who made his debut on the team this year. Team Ireland faced some of the World’s best match anglers from the 20 nations teams including top ranking  teams England, Hungary and the Netherlands.

Brenton Sweeney says:- “It has long been my ambition to achieve a medal for the team overseas, a first for Team Ireland, and thanks to the dedication of the squad, and the hard work of Assistant Manager Nigel Houldsworth and our runners on the bank it’s a dream come true.  Thank you to the NCFFI, sponsors Van Den Eyne Ireland and all our supporters back home.”

The efforts of the NCFFI and all involved in Irish angling are starting to pay off. This is the first Gold medal for Team Ireland and the first medal achieved overseas. Only a year ago on Lough Muckno in County Monaghan NCFFI clubs representing Team Ireland, Lurgan AC and CM Lakelands became Club World Champions and Bronze medallists in feeder fishing respectively. Prior to this it was 2010 when the float fishing club team Triana Image Dublin took Bronze in Portugal.

NCFFI Chair, Jack Tisdall says:- “Congratulations to our manager Brenton Sweeney and his feeder fishing team on this truly historic occasion, winning team and individual gold in Spain.  Over the past number of year’s Brenton has dedicated himself to raising the profile of feeder fishing in Ireland and the NCFFI are delighted to have played its part in supporting our teams.  This result is just reward for all the hard work and personal sacrifice made by the team management, bank support and the team members over a number of World Championships which had already seen Team Ireland Feeder rank in the top ten while competing against fully funded nations with professional anglers. Brenton all I can say is that we are all really proud of your achievement, may there be many more to come.”

Top 5 Individual World Championship Feeder Fishing for Nations

Individually, Michael’s Gold medal comes 50 years on from when Bobby Smithers famously became Ireland’s first World Champion in 1984, followed only by Charlie Richards who became the Under 20 World Champion, float fishing in 2022.

Squad members Charlie Richards and Michael Buchwalder are now Ireland’s only anglers to hold the gold medal in both individual and team categories. Johnny McKinley is the first ever recipient of two gold team medals in Irish coarse angling sport.

The venue, the Rio Guadiana at Mérida has been good to Irish anglers, Ireland’s Cathal Hughes previously won the Silver Medal here in 2010. This fish filled river produced plenty of carp and carassio in weights of 20 to 40kg for the anglers in competition. The odd catfish was caught with bleak and barbel also present.

Team Ireland finished day one with 30 points and a total weight 150.540. Rory Dunne making his debut on the team finished second in sector B and the youngest member of the squad at 19yrs Charlie Richards had 57 fish for the team’s top weight of 36.900 finishing 5th in Sector A. 2022 Silver medalist Michael Buchwalder finished 3rd to two former World Champions in Sector B. James O’Doherty Sector D and Johnny McKinley Sector E finished 4th and 16th respectively. A second impressive day saw Michael finish first in sector D with James 4th and Charlie 5th in sectors C and A. It was a better day for Johnny McKinley as he finished 7th in E sector and Rory Dunne 12th in B resulting in an overall points score of 59 and a total weight of 315.340kg. Lithuania finished just one point behind with 304.320kg for Silver and in the Bronze position, Germany 62pts and 303.670kg.
