More pike and perch for Senan Stanley in the Hidden Heartlands

Senan Stanley started the year in style with some fine pike and perch from the Shannon system…

Icy cold conditions on Sunday!! The plan was to travel to a different lake for a change of scenery and some fresh fishing. This meant an early start on the road with fog all day, fun!

We eventually found nicely conditioned Pike casting our lures throughout the day and had some good sport with Perch up to 38cm.

Always fun to mix it up between venues around Ireland!

Cold start slows fishing for CM Lakelands

The CM Lakelands Feeder Club held a club match last weekend on the ever reliable Garadice Lough in Leitrim, with Houghton’s shore the chosen section.

With temperatures as low as -5°C during the night, it made the fishing vey difficult. Having said that, everyone caught something, but the bigger fish never turned up.

  • 1st was Donatas Nekrasius with a weight of over 2kg which was made up of 1 big skimmer and 20 plus small roach.
  • 2nd was Eimantas Kasalynas with a weight of just under 2kg of roach.
  • 3rd was Brenton Sweeney with just under 1.5kg from 17 small fish .
  • 4th and last in the frame was Robertas Zilaitis with 1.4kg of small fish.

Saoire Mara Charters with great start to the 2024 season

Paul McGonagle at Saoire Mara charters in Donegal reports on his start to 2024…
A glorious winters day on the water today and the first fishing trip of 2024.
Pollack and coalies were plentiful on the offshore reefs where a few decent ling, cod and bluemouth completed the species tally.
A quick drift over clean ground on the way home produced whiting and red gurnard to finish the day.
Picture shows a stunning view of Bloody Foreland and the Derryveagh Mountains in the background.

Eight different winners in the first nine Killybegs Mariners winter league outings

1st place on the night Daragh McGuinness

Killybegs Mariners report…

League outing number 9 of 12 took place on Friday 5th January in Malinbeg on a stunning venue surrounded by cliffs on all 3 sides and a roaring surf smashing in from the bay in front under a star filled sky occasionally lit up with the streaks of shooting stars.

Another great turnout of 19 anglers fished and was nice to see new faces out enjoying the fishing with the gang.
Fishing was “peggy” with those on one side of the beach hitting shoals of coley and filling the quota of 5 allowed and the other side getting a few flounders and turbot. A few 5 bearded rockling were also got including a new club record at 24cm for Gavin Dorrian.
Some fine flounders over 30cm and the longest flattie prize of €52 was won for a brute of a flounder of 39cm for Shane Cunningham.
Double of a flounder and a turbot for Daragh
2nd place overall fishing close to the rocks with fine pollack of 55cm, 44cm and 33cm plus coley to 40cm and flounder winning €52 was Brian Smith on 273 points.
Coleys making over the 20cm minimum
And in 1st place with 5 coleys along with 4 flounders and turbot winning €104 was Daragh McGuinness on 289 points. Daragh as winner had to pick out the lucky peg winner for the 2 euro each entry into the optional lucky peg draw and drew his own peg 18 for that prize also. The midas touch on the night for sure well done.
Thats 8 different winners in the first 9 outings. Well done to all!

Screebe Fishery Round-Up For 2023

Screebe House were in touch with a round-up of the 2023 season, where head chef Trevor Down got the catch record book moving again after a fallow couple of seasons:

We had amazing brown trout fishing from the 1st of February with 6 browns over 5lbs recorded in the first month; the biggest was 8.6lbs!

With good numbers of slob trout around the estuary until mid-April this made for great fishing, when the water warmed to 9 degrees the lakes switched on with good bags of trout reported from Glencho and Derryvonnif with the odd sea trout mixed in.

There was very little salmon fishing done in the spring with low water from May to the end of June. The 1st salmon recorded was caught by returning Screebe chef Trevor Down on the 29th of May.

The first flood came in the 1st week in July with fish seen moving and jumping in the Road Pool and Salmon Pool, but with water very high by this time they ran straight up to the river, and Wings Pool in particular – recording 17 out of 18 fish caught and released.

As I write of December 23, we have recorded 60 salmon in our new trap at the hatchery with very high-water levels the last week we expect more when it drops. Looking positive for the future.

Wishing all our past and present fishermen a happy New Year and tight lines for 2024.
