Inland Fisheries Ireland is to provide more than €1 million in new grants to support fish, and their habitats, in rivers nationwide.

Inland Fisheries Ireland(IFI)’s Habitats and Conservation funding call 2024 is now live, and expressions of interest can be made up to December 15th.

Since 2016, IFI has given more than €6 million in grants to over 280 projects throughout the country under the programme.

IFI’s Habitats and Conservation Fund comprise two schemes – the Salmon and Sea Trout Rehabilitation, Conservation and Protection Fund, and the Midlands Fisheries Fund.

These competitive initiatives are financed from salmon and sea trout angling and commercial fishing licences in Ireland, and the sale of fishing permits.

In 2023, the Salmon and Sea Trout Rehabilitation, Conservation and Protection Fund provided a total of €99,273 to 24 projects in counties Cork, Offaly, Donegal, Galway, Clare, Kerry, Kildare, Sligo, Mayo, Meath, Wicklow and Westmeath. See details on this page.

Up to €50,000 is available through the Midlands Fisheries Fund to support angling and sustainable development works in the midlands fisheries group permit area.

Eligible angling clubs, fishery owners and other stakeholders are invited to express their interest in applying for funding.

Trev Platt wins Sensas Riverfest at Monasterevin

Gary Doyle reports on the two day Sensas Riverfest fished on the Barrow at Monstarevin…

Day 1 of the Sensas Riverfest was held on the River Barrow at Monasterevin on Sunday, 12 November. With 2 feet of extra water and an upstream wind conditions looked good for fish to feed and so it proved. Andrew Burnett lead the way closely followed by Robbie Smithers in second and Trev Platt in third. With 7lb separating the top 4 it was too close to call…

Everyone seemed fairly pleased with their draw on Day 2 so it was all down to whether the fish would feed as aggressively as yesterday. In the end the fishing was harder and the fish didn’t turn up in the numbers expected. [Unless you were Trev Platt – Editor]

Well done to this year’s Riverfest Champion Trev Platt who won the day with 28lb. Second overall was Robbie Smithers who pipped Andrew Burnett by ounces and finished third.

On behalf of myself and Gavin Walsh I’d like to thank everyone who supported the event in its first year.

The Irish Fly Fair 18th & 19th November – This Weekend

Come and support the hardworking team who put together a wonderful show each year.  We are looking forward to the show and seeing you there.

Traditional Blackwater Opening Day 1st February 2024

Our annual opening day is on the 1st February at Blackwater Salmon Fishery on the River Blackwater in Ireland and all are welcome to bless the river, get in some casting practice, go fishing and meet some friends. The cost is €25,  food will be provided on the day and please book your place as we have limited space for this day.

Skagit Casting/Fishing Course 10th February 2024

Our popular Skagit Casting/Fishing Course with Glenda Powell and Noel Fitzmaurice teaching will be held at the Blackwater Salmon Fishery on the 10th February and all levels of casting ability are welcome.  6 places are available, all equipment can be provided at no extra cost, lunch will also be provided and the cost is €175 per person.

Spey Casting/Fishing Course Beginners/Improvers 17th February

Our Beginners/Improvers Spey Casting/fishing Course with Glenda Powell and Noel Fitzmaurice teaching will be held at the Blackwater Salmon Fishery on the 17th February and we have 6 places available on this course.  All equipment can be provided at no extra cost, lunch will also be provided and the cost is €175 per person.

Wet Fly Fishing for Trout Course 9th March 2024

Last year we held a Wet Fly Fishing Course for Trout with Glenda Powell, Noel Fitzmaurice and Jimmy Tyrell teaching and was a great success.  In 2024 we plan to run another course and the date is 9th March, all equipment can be provided if required, all levels catered for and beginners are most welcome, lunch will also be provided. The cost is €200 for the day and we have 8 places available.

Fish-Live-Learn with Glenda Powell online Newsletter

Fish-Live-Learn with Glenda Powell is an online monthly newsletter consisting of both video and written content.  We hold gatherings to help people learn to fly fish and improving their skills, offer advice, have fun, and many of our members are starting to send us content for our newsletter.  We cover game angling with the fly, and we have members from all around the world. We started Fish-Live-Learn in March 2021 and our membership is growing.


In one of our interviews we are joined by Michael Sheehan who talks about Ireland’s largest recorded salmon.

This month we are going to meet some of our members in Hyde Park in London on 23rd November at the Speke Monument from noon to 2pm to have a chat and some casting practice. Also we will hold a meet in the Netherlands in early December and plan to meet at Kilmurry on the River Blackwater on 9th December for some casting tuition.  All these events are included in the cost of your membership and hope some of our members can attend. We are also holding a Zoom meeting on the 2nd December at 7pm.

Each month there are 5 sections that cover fly fishing and there are always interesting interviews with people in our industry, places of interest of where to fish, and also tuition videos from myself and others.  We often have one piece on food of the area we are visiting and another piece of interest from the locality.  I am always at the end of the phone or email to help in whatever questions you may have about learning, techniques and tackle advice or simply to have a chat.  The cost of membership is €36 per year.

Super pike session for Lawrence

Lawrence Peile from Co. Armagh was in touch to report a cracking pike session over the weekend.

There was a brief weather window at the weekend before Storm Debi arrived, so out came the tackle, and fortunately the pike were in obliging mood. The day started with an early take which managed to pinch my whole herring before I struck even though it was tied on! Shortly after this I hooked into a 26lbs pike.

No sooner had I photographed and returned her than I had another run which resulted in a 22lbs 4oz fish. This had a large tail sticking out of its throat which I think was a bream and if you look closely at the photograph you can see a bulge on the flank. Two 20’s in the space of 10 minutes and happy as Larry!

Two other takes followed as the day progressed resulting in a 16 and an 18lbs 8 oz.

How’s the Fishing?

So this week we got our first pike session out of the way. Myself and Mark headed off up to Kildare on the canals in search of some jack pike, and maybe in search of something bigger. It was a cold day, with very mixed conditions. We met several Jack pike biggest up to 4lb. Only landing a few of the fish we met. Using 10ft & 7wt rod to chuck these pike flys we tied up, along with 30lb shock leader and wire trace. A easy set up to try something new during the off season.

On Sunday, Myself & Mark fished the Leinster Bank Qualifiers for 2023, on Laois Angling Center. We both Qualified with 10 fish each, which allows us to head to National Banks in 2024 to try qualify for National team. Conditions were good, after a wet Saturday. Fish were active throughout the day. Catching on our Piscari Olive Minkie pattern using our own Olive Minkie strips & small dries. Congratulations to the prize winners during the day and to Laois angling center for hosting a great event.

Irish Fly Fair – Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th November

A reminder to all the fly fishers and fly tiers out there that the Irish Fly Fair will take place this coming weekend at the Killyhevlin hotel in Enniskillen. The fair will open from 10.00 – 17.00 on Saturday and 10.00 – 16.30 on Sunday.

Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the best international fly-dressers practise their art, whilst champion fly-casters will be available to demonstrate and advise on fly-casting techniques and fly-fishing tactics.

As usual, there will be a series of talks and seminars from expert anglers on a wide range of interesting angling-related topics and of course, a massive range of top quality trade stands selling everything the fly angler and fly dresser needs.

To encourage the youth into the sport there is the annual Irish Fly Fair Fly dressing & Fun Fly Casting competitions.

Nicholas Madden wins 3rd round of Annamoe Winter League

Brian McNally reports on the third match in the Annamoe Trout Fisheries Fly Fishing Winter League….

Twenty anglers competed over four hours in the third Qualifying Heat last Saturday 11th November.

It was a bright cool calm day with the temperature at 6°C.

The trout landed were mostly caught on intermediate lines. Buzzers, Blood Worms and Apts were a good choice on the day. A total of fifty eight fish were landed, measured and returned safely back into the lake. Water temperatures were 7°C.

Results

  • 1st. Nicholas Madden 9 trout
  • 2nd. Karl Elliott. 7 trout.
  • 3rd. Tommy Russell.5 trout

Southern County tackle test for South East Casting

With the Irish Fly Fair only a few days away, I have been casting more than usual and getting into the spirit to attend this wonderful event. Looking at the line ups and talent that will be there gives a feeling of excitement to me as well as a slightly nervous feel. Many of the exhibitors are anglers and tiers that I studied and watched videos on for my APGAI assessment, so to be included in the line up with them was a dream come true for me.

I decided to take a little break from just casting as I received the Cadence 10ft 5wt last week and wanted to hook some trout on this rod and test its fish playing capabilities and how it performed in the field. As with all Cadence rods, it was extremely light, so I really looked forward to hitting a Southern County Rainbow.

I recently watched Peter from Piscari Fly tie up some damsels and beetles, so I decided to copy these patterns and give them a go. The fish today were hard to come by with the odd one every now and again leaping as if to say, “we are here!”. There was a slightly sheltered spot near the end of the lake, it was sheltered by a high grassy bank. I felt that with the wind and a high grassy bank surely the odd beetle may be blown in for a swim.

As I made my way over to the spot, I didn’t see much activity to give me encouragement, but don’t judge a book and all that…

I had been there for 10-15mins, making a number of casts to search the whole area, when the line went tight and I lifted into a nice fish. The fish gave all indications of being quite large, swimming about quite deep with the odd couple of strong head thumps. The rod performed very well and the power in the butt section was perfect when I needed to add pressure to this fish. Eventually the fish came to the net which was a great relief. It was a lovely rainbow, carrying a couple of scars and shade over one eye. Not fully sure about my theory of using the beetle near a windy grassy bank, it works with terrestrial patterns on the Nore for me when the wind is blowing from the bank into the river, maybe there is something in it, or else it could be complete coincidence, the mystery keeps me trying anyway.

I am absolutely delighted to be attending the event, I will be at the Cadence stand where you can try before you buy, stop by to say hello and try one of the rods with me. I am also giving one on one tuition with APGAI Ireland as are some of our other members, this is a wonderful opportunity make sure to try stop by. Finally, I will be giving a casting demo from 14.30 – 15.00 both days and look forward to seeing some of you there. Fly Tying Tutorial: An Irish Lough Mayfly with Jackie Mahon and Tom Sullivan

In this video Jackie Mahon ties a CDC Mayfly dry pattern with Tom Sullivan for fishing the Irish Lough Mayfly hatches. While this will perform well on Lough Corrib, Arrow, Mask, Sheelin and Melvin it would also be an excellent option for river mayfly as well. The blended dubbing for the body paired with the bi-color CDC for the wing make it an extremely realistic pattern. When fishing it, Jackie recommends only applying floatant to the top of the fly and the wing. That way it will sit a bit lower in the surface film and be more likely to fool picky fish.

Munster Coarse anglers report on their second match of their winter league…

Round Two of our winter league was fished at the O’Briensbridge rowing course. The river was back at summer levels and with little flow it was a day to draw the early pegs where the fish seem to have settled. That was how it worked for all except for Morgan who on the furthest away end peg caught all day and had a well deserved 2nd place with 10lb 12oz.

Top man was Clive on peg one who fished the pole all day and finished up with a magnificent 16lb 13oz.

Third was Steve fishing the feeder at distance for his 10lb 4oz.

Fish of the day goes to Ian who was heading for the wooden spoon when in the last 10 minutes he caught the stretch’s pet hybrid who came to the scales at just short of 5lb, gaining him a valuable 5 points. From Zero to Hero with one fish well done Ian.
