Not as much to report from West cork salmon rivers last week. All we have for you is news that there were 8 salmon caught on the Coomhola, best was 8lbs by a club angler on shrimp.
A good salmon released on the Blackwater Valley fishery yesterday
Very quiet again to the weekending 09 July, although the last number of days have shown a few grilse in better numbers appearing and not only in the middle to lower reaches.
Fortwilliam reports that with .30m reading on the gauge they had great sport on the river yesterday with a nice few fish (up to 10lb) landed and all released. The whole fishery fished very well so “better late than never”.

Blackwater Valley Fishery is also reporting good fishing with some fine salmon into double figures caught this week so far. Also good to hear that all beats are producing fish.

Next week could be promising with an expected upturn in grilse numbers. Still a few nice salmon around but very shy to take the lure.

Skipper John Fleming loves his shark fishing. We mean, he really loves his shark fishing!
So we reckon he was well chuffed this week on the first day targeting sharks this season, when 6 porbeagle sharks were brought to the boat by his crew. Check out the pics below!
All sharks were unhooked safely and released again.

A regular day is between 9am- 6pm from either Rossaveal, Spiddal or Galway depending on species being sought after. Fishing on the inshore reefs for pollock, cod, ling, wrasse, conger eel and mackerel can be reached in 10 minutes from departure, while our offshore reef marks are within 45 minutes of departure. Our ground fishing for tope, spurdog, ray, bullhuss, turbot, plaice and the giant common skate can all be reached within the hour which ensures the most amount of time is spent fishing.
The shark season usually starts at the end of June and runs into late October, this is the ultimate angling adrenaline rush with these hard fighting blue and porbeagle sharks all being tagged and released safely.

The long spell of windy weather saw the Clare Dragoon confined to the Shannon Estuary, with even that not possible on some days last week. Anglers who stuck at it were rewarded with doggies and thornback ray, with some tope caught too.
Thornback rayA fine tope for this angler from GermanyAnd another one
But it was a new species for the boat, and skipper Luke Aston, that made the week. Markus Muller landed a stingray, the first for him and the first for the boat. Hopefully the first of many, with apparently a few more showing up for other anglers in the estuary in recent times.
Stingray!

Our canals are providing good sport to anglers this year and there are regular matches held at various venues along both the Royal Canal and Grand Canal, enabling competition anglers to test their angling skills against each other. Last week saw a couple of such competitions, and they shared a common theme at the top of the leaderboard…
The Edenderry Coarse Angling Club faced a windy Grand Canal last Saturday, and the water was on the low side and clear, making a difficult set of conditions for anglers to negotiate. As expected, fishing was tricky, but one angler made light of the tough conditions, as Dean Murray bagged a very respectable 17+ lb to win the match.

Results as follows:
1. Dean Murray 17-03
2. Joe Nolan 9-06
3. Conor Browne 8-12
Section A

2. Paul Kelly 6-12
Section B

Earlier this week, the Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation held the second leg of its Open Qualifier on the Grand Canal at Daingean. And there was a familiar face at the top of the standings for that one, as Dean Murray made it a canal double with 11lb 7oz.
