A few salmon from the Blackwater but quiet overall

Blackwater salmon

Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery report that Jason had a beautiful fish of around 9lbs on the morning of the 26th. Water clarity was perfect and river height at Ballyduff was reading 0.42 and 1.32 at Killavullen. Water temperature is at 9.6C.

Blackwater salmon

Both the Blackwater and Bride Rivers were in good condition for both Salmon and Trout angling all last week with levels normal.

Apart from Jason’s fish we’ve heard of 3 other salmon caught from Mallow to Banteer on the Blackwater.  These are the first few Salmon reported from this area for season. And so far it’s been a slow one, anglers very scarce and not much to report in the way of catches.

Go fishing…

This large and broad river has a lot of fine salmon fishing spread among many private and club fisheries. They are all easily accessible and most welcome visiting anglers. Spring run improving in recent years. The best grilse fishing is towards the end of the season. For more information see:

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Knots, casts and methods make the difference on the Nore

nore trout

Dan O’Neill angling guide and casting instructor at South East Casting reports on a recent trip to the Nore…

My guests this weekend are ones very familiar to me and share a very unique bond that only fly fishing can form. As we got ready and put  our waders on it was quite clear that these were going to be 2 very special days. Of course it was already a very special weekend as Alan informed me it was Pat’s 21st birthday weekend!! With this weight firmly set on my shoulders it was time to get to the water and hopefully allow the morning’s results to relieve me of the weight.

Before we headed to the river, we went through some of the knots we’d be using in the fishing room. I explained to Pat and Alan that my preferred fly line to leader connection is the needle knot. I believe the needle knot gives exceptional turnover cutting out the latch effect that a braided loop or welded loop gives you. This knot was demonstrated to me by a very good friend Pat Hughes who I met through my APGAI journey (Thanks Pat). The next knot would be blood knot to blood knot followed by the perfection loop. Both anglers picked up on the knots quite quickly (Pat’s young eyes). I think I may have converted them to using the needle knot from now on.

As we got to the waters edge we touched a little on casting and a couple of different casts we could use in difficult situations (Single Haul, Wiggle cast, Aerial mend, Reach cast, overhead cast, Accuracy casting). Both anglers were quite competent casters and it was nice to watch them cast as the unfolding of a fly line loop never loses its magic. Adding a couple of different casts to your arsenal is never a bad thing and very fun to learn.

Now it was time to put our new skill set to the test. The river on the first day was about 15cm above normal for trout fishing which presented a very slight challenge but not one that would stop Alan or Pat. Plenty of trout came to hand over the two days but I feel day two was probably the highlight as we had plenty of nice trout on dry dropper below the white bridge. We used an olive nymph pattern which the trout seemed to respond very well to. Some of the takes were magnificent and had us craving them throughout the day.

nore trout

As the morning progressed fish became a little more active on the surface, maybe not enough to justify putting on a dry fly but wet flies certainly would be worth a shot. Changing the leader set ups to suit wet fly fishing it was time to get in and again practice some of our casts while swinging the wet flies. When the water is lower I tend to fish wets upstream along seams or into pocket water. It can be very exciting watching your line tighten up followed by a buttery gold brown trout leaping in the air for freedom. Today however the water had risen from yesterday so we decided down and across was the way to go. I demonstrated how to swing, slow down and speed up the fly during the swing. This time I slowed the swing right down to which a lovely brown trout obliged and took the fly. The perfect demonstration ( 1 in a million chance of it happening again that way). Feeling Pat’s eagerness I handed him the rod for him to try. Passing on and assisting with the technique it was time for me to step away and go to Alan. My back had not been turned very long before Pat hit his first trout on the wet fly. Lots of excitement; the flow was energetic as was the trout. Pat and Alan had many more trout on the wet and seemed to enjoy the techniques being very surprised at how subtle the takes were which at times felt like the current running along your fly line.

nore trout

A great two days with two anglers that share a very unique bond like I mentioned earlier. Listening to their stories and tales of their angling adventures gave me knowledge of something else fly fishing can offer and that’s a life long friendship with feelings and adventures that is unique to angling.

Five salmon for Currane anglers over a windy week

Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Currane where few couple of salmon were caught over the weekend…

20/4/23 The Currane Anglers were all quiet today after yesterday’s excitement and for one good reason, it was wild out there with a strong ESE wind blowing, followed by bright sunshine all day. Just for the record only two ventured out today.

21/4/2023 Just two boats out today but at least one Currane angler hit the Salmon jackpot and that was renowned Dutch Currane angler Mr. Tim Van Der laan who caught a fantastic 12 lbs Salmon on the troll, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton Jnr. Wind ESE light to fresh and overcast.

Tim with his Currane salmon
Tim with his Currane salmon

22/4/23 Good few boats out today, but alas my Noble Salmon wasn’t precured this day, but to be fair it wasn’t an ideal fishing day for the Currane anglers with flat calm conditions for most of the day except for the odd light variable breezes and overcast with the odd bit of sun breaking through. Staying with the wind, it was literally all over the place, you take your pick.

23/4/2023 Bright and sunny throughout the day followed by a light breeze from the NNW so I take it the Currane reels were as quiet as my WhatsApp. Now we head for The Mad Fisherman and his video so the screen is all yours Vince.

24/4/2023 Just two boats out but there was only one boat that takes all the headlines and that is Renowned UK all-round Currane angler Mr. Mark Knowles, caught a fine 6lbs. Salmon while trolling with his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com Wind NNE light.

25/4/2023 Straight to the Fly department, Dutch Currane angler Mr. Tim Van Der laan on his last day of his fishing trip to Lough Currane caught a fine 8 lbs. Salmon on the fly while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton Junior. Now we head for the trolling department and for good reason, Renowned trolling specialist UK Currane angler Mr. Martin Henderson certainly put his words of wisdom and advice to his guide while trolling today and fair play to his guide he manipulated Martin’s lures exactly how Martin advised him and low and behold their reel went off like a rocket and all hell broke lose, as Martin took the rod the battle was on and I can say Martin had a good battle while playing his fine Salmon and by all accounts it wasn’t long before his guide had the fine 11 lbs. Salmon in the net. Staying in the trolling department, UK Currane angler Mr. Mark Knowles, caught a fine 10 lbs. Salmon while trolling with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com Now we head for the weather, wind ESE veered SE veered again SSE light to fresh followed by good cloud cover.

Wild Atlantic Way sunset

26/4/2023 Local Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com reported only two boats out and no good today. SE veered SSE light to fresh and overcast all day.

27/4/2023 We start with the Obituary of Mr. Brod O’Sullivan RIP as you can see.

Now we head out onto lough Currane where local gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a fine Salmon on the troll and for the rest of the Currane anglers it was all quiet in all departments going my WhatsApp. Wind SE light to fresh and variable.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Ballincarrig Weir rock ramp project, River Burren

“Weirs can be significant barriers for fish, especially for salmon and trout that need to swim freely upstream to spawn,” says Alan Cullagh, Fisheries Inspector at Inland Fisheries Ireland, and the lead on the Ballincarrig Weir project that took two years to complete.

“It’s a wonderful day when the project is complete, and we see a huge value in the time and investment we have put into a project. On the Ballinacarrig Weir, for example, we completed the works in September 2022, in time for the annual upstream migration of Atlantic salmon. They can now freely access 30km of spawning and nursery habitat in the River Burren and a further 80km of spawning and nursery habitat in the tributaries connected to this river.”

Great fly action for pike in Boyle

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reports great fly action for pike from the Boyle area. Repeat client Daniel from Dublin enjoyed great flyfishing for pike while guided by Bodo landing a fine Esox lucius just under the magic 1 meter mark.

Great fly-caught pike for Daniel

Not often the guide himself gets some time to cast a line…However, this time Bodo made use of this privilege and added another two fly-caught predators to the tally.

Anglers reporting better fly life on Loughs Conn & Cullin as catches improve

Osgur Grieve reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

Lough Conn:

Peter Roche was fishing shallows on the western shore around Gallagher’s on Tuesday 18th and released 3 trout using Connemara Black and Fiery Brown dabblers.

Ian Wise of Cloonamoyne Fishery reports guiding 2 anglers on Saturday 22nd. They had 7 trout to the boat and released 5 of these, the best trout measuring 14 inches. Successful flies were Sooty Olive, Fiery Brown Dabbler and White Hackled Invicta.

Lough Cullin:

Peter Roche and Gary Binley fished Lough Culinn on Saturday 22nd. Peter released what can only be described as a “well fed keeper” along with 3 other smaller trout. His best trout of the day was lost unfortunately but was estimated at 1.5lbs. Gary also released 3 smaller trout using wets. Successful flies included Fiery Brown Dabbler, Golden Olive Dabbler, Golden Olive Bumble.

Peter Roche’s “well fed keeper” before release

Anglers on both Loughs Conn and Cullin reported seeing more fly life during the week than previously seen this season with olives hatching in good numbers on some days, buzzers hatching and even the odd mayfly starting to appear. Lets hope air temperatures stay suitably warm which should encourage more trout to the surface.

Catch numbers on the Moy slowly increasing

Osgur Grieve reports from the River Moy…

Angling Report week ending 23rd April 2023

Waterlevels at Ballylahan Bridge dropped for most of the week from 1.03m on Monday 17th to 0.6m on the morning of Saturday 22nd, after which the river rose slightly, peaking at 0.75m  by Sunday morning. The overall reduction in waterlevels compared to the previous week meant that prospects for fishing were good. Anglers are starting to see some fish and catch numbers are slowly increasing on some fisheries.

Ballina Salmon Anglers were into action during the week recording 4 salmon for the week weighing 8lbs., 5lb., 5lbs. and 11lbs.

Easy Mayo Anglers Association recorded 8 salmon for the week, 3 of which were released. On Friday 21st Sean Woods, Belfast released a 10lbs. salmon on the fly. Saturday 22nd saw Paul Kelly, Sligo release an 8lbs. salmon using spinner and on Sunday 23rd Ian Guegan, Foxford released a 10.5lbs. salmon on spinner.

There were no other reports of salmon caught on the other fisheries along the Moy but with the improving waterlevels and increase in angling activity it shouldn’t be long before salmon start to be caught from the other fisheries too.

Ropey venue works wonders for Menapia SAC

Anglers who managed consistent trebles came out on top
Anglers who managed consistent trebles came out on top

Anglers from Menapia Sea Angling Club fished a venue known as The Rope last weekend, and it proved a far from ropey choice as fishing was fast and furious right from the off. On a day when everyone was catching, it was those that managed consistent trebles that topped the rankings as both dabs and flounder were there in good numbers. Some of the dabs were impressive, with plenty measuring over 30cm. Joe Carley came out on top in Zone A with 23 fish, while John Watchorn won Zone B with 23 fish. Adam Watchorn topped the juniors with a superb 17 fish. See Menapia SAC Facebook for the full report.
