This press release courtesy of the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland:

The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland NCFFI, awarded the honour of hosting the 6th edition of this event by FIPSed Fédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive en Eau Douce , is pleased to be working with Monaghan County Council and the local community, with support from Inland Fisheries Ireland, to bring to Lough Muckno its first world class angling event.

The destination for the championships is Lough Muckno, a freshwater lake located in County Monaghan, adjacent to the town of Castleblayney. Set in 900 acres of scenic parkland, the venue is truly a world class angling facility.

The NCFFI first hosted the European Championships on Lough Muckno in 1998. The area is since renowned for its fishing festivals and warm hospitality, and the lake has been sympathetically developed to offer “parking at your peg” across several locations. This fine angling facility has recently been enhanced with investment from Monaghan County Council under the Outdoor Recreation Scheme, ORIS, supported by the Lough Muckno Festivals Committee. The competition will be staged along various sections of Lough Muckno, including Black & White Islands and Concra Wood. The NCFFI would like to express sincere gratitude to Coillte and the Concra Wood Golf Club for providing the use of their respective shoreline facilities.

The town of Castleblayney will welcome twenty-eight teams representing seventeen nations to the area, providing a welcome boost to the local economy and angling tourism.

Chair of Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Municipal District, Aidan Campbell says: “Monaghan has fantastic potential as a destination for angling tourism, boasting superb venues such as Lough Muckno, as well as excellent hospitality. Monaghan County Council is delighted to support this international festival and to welcome visiting anglers and their support teams to this beautiful part of Ireland and particularly to the town of Castleblayney.

He continued, “We would encourage the local community to come out to welcome the anglers in force at the Parade of Nations, a colourful affair to welcome the teams in procession as they make their way along the main street to the Iontas Theatre at 6pm.”

Event organiser Jack Tisdall, NCFFI Chair says: “The NCFFI is pleased to bring the first world championships to Lough Muckno. This is the ultimate competition for club teams fishing the feeder discipline as we showcase the local angling product to club anglers worldwide to whom the Irish angling scene appeals.

What’s more the federation is delighted to present its two top club feeder teams at the Championships. Both the CM Lakelands Feeder Club and Lurgan Coarse Angling Club‘s both frequently fish on the venue and will present a healthy challenge to the visiting club teams. Please come along to give them your support as they go for gold”.

If you are available from 8.30 to 2pm on the Saturday and Sunday, or both and would like to get involved please visit www.ncffi.ie/world-clubs-2023 for more details and to register on-line.

Lough Arrow Anglers report…

There were a number of trout caught during the week, mainly on wet flies. Paul McTiernan landed a lovely fish of 3 lbs. to a Black Dabbler. Gerry Martin had two small trout on the duck fly, although the windy weather has put the duck fly fishing on hold for a few days.

The second competition of the season will take place on Sunday 16th April. The Martin Carr Perpetual Cup will be presented to the winner. The proceeds of this competition will be donated to charity so your support will be appreciated. Usual club competition rules apply.
