Pike Trio do well at Melview Fishing Lodge!

Sean with one of his pike of the session

Bill, Sean and John who are regulars to Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford were up once again to try their luck for good pike fishing.  Using various dead baits they were able to produce some great pike over their few days of fishing.

John is happy with this one
Bill with his 3rd of the day

Their total weight was 246lbs. with fish to 97cm with a good few very large fish lost at the boat. Host and guide Kevin said: “Not a lot I can show these guys now as they have been a number of times now and know the waters well. Another good trip and enjoyed the company guys, already looking forward to seeing you again soon. Thanks lads.”

Great pike fishing for father and son from Italy at Melview Fishing Lodge!

Paolo and son Filippo with a nice plump pike

Kevin Lyons reports…

Paolo and Son Filippo from Italy decided to arrange a short pike fishing trip to Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford, and what a great fishing trip it turned out to be for them. Their first day was a guided one to show them around the water and their day turned out to be a good one producing some nice Pike to 96cm.

All smiles for Filippo with another nice pike

The following days they gave it a go on their own. They managed some very nice pike using both lures and dead baits. On two of the days they lost a couple of very big pike well over the meter just at the net. Host Kevin said, the guys had a great time and Filippo even managed to beat his personal best which he was over the moon at. Well done guys and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Ireland on the Fly podcast talks to Sean McManmon

Sean and Bush

From fly fishing with US Presidents & Tiger Woods – Sean McManmon’s life on the fly

For this week’s episode Daire & Tom speak to Sean McManmon, a hugely experienced fly angler, and someone known as Mr Salmon in some circles in Ireland.

After decades working in the K Club he has guided US Presidents, rock stars, supermodels and golfing greats such as Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara.

From tales of giving the Secret Service the slip to catching 19 salmon in a day, Sean has a lifetime of memories, insights and most importantly, great stories and sums up exactly what fly fishing is all about in a life well-lived.

Sean McManmon

If we get to fish half as much as Sean has and seen half as much as he has seen, well, I think we’ll be happy with our fly fishing lives….

4 boats out most days on Currane but no salmon

Vincent Appleby reports on another quiet week for anglers fishing Lough Currane…

23/2/2023 Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com reports, Just four boats out and all quiet in all departments. Wind light with reasonable cloud cover.

24/2/2023 www.fishingwithdom.com reports on today’s manipulations on Lough Currane and I quote, 4 boats out and all quiet. Wind NNE light followed by good cloud cover.

25/2/2023 There were four boats out this day and for all their reels were slack and silent. Wind ENE light followed by bright sunshine all day.

26/2/2023 There were four boats out this day and for all their efforts the Wild Currane Atlantic Salmon stayed dormant. Wind ESE fresh followed by good cloud cover.

27/2/2023 It was reported to me today that a lot of Currane and none Currane anglers are under the impression that the Waterville Fishery i.e. The Butler Pool, Lough Currane, the Commeragh River and Upper lakes are still under the Brown Tag rule, I can assure you this is incorrect and thankfully we are a Blue tag fishery. Now to today’s manipulations, well I can say there was no blue tagged Wild Salmon caught today. Just for the record there were 5 boats out. Wind SSE light to fresh followed by reasonable cloud cover.

28/2/2023 Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com reports on today’s proceedings, there were four boats out and their reels stayed cold. Wind ENE light and overcast.

1/3/2023 All quiet on the SW front in all departments. Wind ENE light and variable followed good cloud cover and cold.

East winds, tough fishing at Ballywilling but some good fish landed

Cork Sea Angling Club report on their second competition of 2023 fished near Ballywilling…

East is least they say, I’m thinking this may be true.

Cork Sea Angling Club had their second competition of 2023 on Saturday night from 17:00 to 22:00 in Ballywilling with a sharp easterly breeze that would cut the nose off a brass monkey. We were meant to fish Garyvoe but we felt we would have been fishing off the boulders at the top of the beach as the tide came in.

12 anglers showed up and first fish landed was an impressive 60cm bass by Pawel Kurowski, a beauty, and followed by another bass from Eric Gosnell 46 cm.

As the wind died down a few dogs showed up. Chris O’Connell had a 52 cm bullhuss and Pawel caught a 32cm whiting.

Well done to everyone that fished, at the end of the competition not knowing if I still had toes left from the cold the results were given out…

Results

1st place Christopher o connell with a huss and a dog
2nd place was Pawel Kurowski with a bass and a whiting
3rd was Eric Gosnell with a bass

And congratulations to everyone that got into the fish offs for the master angler and to West Cork and District SAC for doing a fantastic job hosting the competition.

Cold fishing for Galway Bay SAC in Connemara

A small thornback ray for Gary

Galway Bay SAC held their first club master angler competition at Renvyle, Connemara, last Saturday evening, generously sponsored by Wildhunter Galway. A cold easterly made for very calm conditions, with clear skies and temperatures hovering above zero it turned out to be a lovely evening. Fishing was from 6-10pm, with bites slow until darkness fell. Gary Miskell had an early ray, but fishing was otherwise very slow with a couple of coalfish also hitting the beach. A small run of dogs around 8-9pm put a few scores on the board, but overall it was a slow evening. As the old saying goes “When the wind blows east, the fish bite least!”

A small thornback ray for Gary

At lines up, it turned out that Gary was the winner, with 4 dogs and ray. Remis took second place with 4 dogs, and there was a tie for 3rd place, with returning angler Kevin O’Hara getting the nod with the longest dog.

Brian Reidy presents Gary with his prize, a voucher from Wildhunter Galway

Next up is Carrowmore beach, Louisburgh this coming Sunday, with fishing from 1-5pm, check-in at 12. New members are always welcome!

Nice Barrow pike for Sean Franey

Youth angler Sean Franey was out on the Barrow recently and managed to land a nice pike of 10lb measuring approx 32 inches. 16-year-old Sean is a very keen angler and was fishing close to Monasterevin using dace as deadbait. Nice to see a report coming from that part of the Barrow and hopefully, we’ll see another nice pike for Sean before too long.

Going up the country proves a successful soujourn for Limerick County Pike Anglers

In the words of a Canned Heat 60’s classic, going up the country can take you to a place where the water tastes like wine…. and members of the Limerick County Pike Anglers Association found the waters to be particularly sweet when they made a trip ‘up the country’ for the 3rd round of their club league.

Only eleven anglers made the trip, as numbers were reduced due to illness and holidays, but they were treated to a day full of action as the pike were definitely on the take. A total of 20 fish were caught on the day, but they had plenty of others that came off so there was plenty to keep them occupied.

Winner on the day was Darragh Williams with 5 fish for just under 20lbs. Full results were as follows:

Heaviest bag:
1st Darragh Williams 19lb14oz
2nd Seamus Coffee 14lb09oz
3rd Charlene Dillon 14lb04oz
Thomas Williams 5lb11oz
Mick O Donoghue 5lb02oz
Gavin Cashin 4lb10oz
Heaviest fish
1st Seamus Cofffee 8lb13oz
2nd Charlene Dillon 8lb02oz
3rd Darragh Williams 7lb06oz
Mick O Donoghue 3lb02oz
Gavin Cashin 3lb02oz
Thomas Williams 2lb01oz
