On Friday 27 January 2023, a draw took place to allocate an initial 45 Brown Tags for the taking of salmon on the Lower Lee. Double figure congers for Killybegs Mariners

Double figure conger for Killybegs Mariner

Killybegs Mariners SAC enjoyed some great fishing during the past week. Read their report below…

Snow capped hills but that didn’t stop Gavin and Cormac getting out and finding some good fish on the shore marks. Double figure congers, whiting, codling, rocklings, dabs, and poor cods.

Earlier in the week, Mariners enjoyed a fun evening for the longest flattie competition. Surely it was a night of counting coleys hopping off the baits. With just a few flatties landed it was a late arrival to the beach for the last hour or so that found the longest so well done to Pat Byrne with a 32cm fish for 1st place and Cormac Duddy taking the 2nd place with a 24cm flounder.

Please fish in a sustainable manner

Calling Young Shore Competition Anglers

The Irish Federation of Sea Anglers are holding two shore angling sessions for young (under 16 and under 21) anglers who wish to progress in their shore angling, and possibly represent Ireland on the international stage.

This is part of the IFSA CAST programme, which aims to take novice anglers to accomplished sea anglers, and to reach the highest level they can if they choose competition fishing. Here’s a video from a couple of years ago which explains the CAST programme better.

These are also qualifying competitions for the Irish teams (u16 and u21) which will travel to the World Championships in Holland later this year. There are two sessions, one in Leinster on the 25th of February, and one in Munster on the 25th of March.

Check out the IFSA Facebook page here to register your interest in taking part, or contact the head coaches involved: Brian Cooke chc.cooke@gmail.com and John Marshall johnmarshall100@gmail.com

Best of luck to all the young anglers taking part, even if you don’t make the team we’re sure you will learn a huge amount to take back to club and provincial competitions.

25+ pike smashes PB and sets a high bar for Limerick County Pike Anglers to aim for

A new PB of 25lb + and a great start to the year!

The Limerick County Pike Anglers held their first competition of the new year at the weekend, and it was a great start to the season, with a fish that will be hard to better coming to the net for one lucky angler. The pike were biting from early on, with one angler connecting with a fish on his first cast, only for it to come off a couple of minutes later. Not long after, Kevin Flanagan had another good tussle with a fish that he managed to bring ashore, this one tipping the scales at 15lb + and putting him in pole position on the day. But he was only getting warmed up… and a while later, a shout went out that a real beast had been hooked. And a beast it truly was, as Kevin brought a fine fish to the net that turned the scales at 25lb 12oz. So, two fish for 40lb+ easily put Kevin top of the pile on the day, and set a high bar for others to try and better for the rest of the year.

Perch and pike for Mick in the midlands

Mick ‘the fish’ Flanagan has been testing his home waters in the Mullingar area this January. This week, Mick spent a few hours hunting perch with a drop-shot jigging rig and some small paddletail soft plastic lures.

Plump perch

The perch were fairly obliging – as was a midlands pike that had recently had its dinner! When pike are in the mood they will attack a lure even if they have a full belly, as this pike shows.

Still hungry

Mick knows that he is blessed to have such good fishing on his doorstep and he is taking bookings for the 2023 season from anglers who want a share of the midlands fishing action!

Currane anglers hoping for first salmon of the season

Lough Currane
Lough Currane in Co. Kerry

Vincent Appleby is reports from Waterville where anglers are waiting to catch the first salmon of the season…

19/1/2023 Into the third day of the 2023 season and all is quiet on all fronts as you can see by the photos this freezing day as the snow laid on the Kerry Mountains. Just for the record there were 5 boats out. Now we go back to the Bacon and Cabbage in the Lobster Bar Tuesday evening and as I said there was good crack but sadly I missed a cracker of a song about Lough Currane by Currane UK angler Mr. John Young, so take it way John the stage is yours…

20/1/2022 Currane gate reports that there were two boats out and their lines were slack. Wind SE fresh and veered SES light.

21/1/2023 Just two boats out this day and by all accounts their lines were slack. Wind SSE light average wind speed 12 mph and overcast.

22/1/2022 Just two boats out this day, just for the record there were a few Kelts and the odd Brown Trout caught. Wind SW and veered NW light and overcast.

23/1/2023 No reports of the first Salmon caught this day and that includes all Irish fisheries,  so come on you Currane anglers and get out there and catch the first Salmon of 2023 In Ireland. Wind SSE light, gusts up to 17 Km/h and overcast.

24/1/2023 Currane angler Mr. Eric Jouen of Waterville boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com reported that he caught 3 Kelts on the troll. Just for the record there was one other boat out, so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know there was a total of two boats out. Wind SSW light, gusts up to 22Km/h

O’Briensbridge fishes well for some in Munster CAC league

Munster Coarse Anglers

Munster Coarse Anglers were back again at O’Briensbridge over the weekend, this time to fish Round 6 of their winter series…

Round 6. Back to O’Briensbridge rowing course. Gone was the film set but it was still outstanding achievements for some and tragedy for others my self included.

Outstanding award goes to Steve with his second win on the trot on this venue 11lb 2oz

Ray’s long walk was not was in vain as 2nd place 6lb 3oz was his reward.

Richard’s 4lb 9oz was a credible 3rd (no hybrid this week though.)

Finally well done to the rest of the lads who scratched a way bites all day and to myself the wooden spoon – truly hammered on both sides by 1st and 3rd…

Dates for this year’s remaining matches are
  • 5th. February
  • 12th. February
  • 26th February

Venues to be decided near the match dates.
