Angling on Loughs Conn & Cullin remains slow

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

Trout angling on the lakes remained slow with the weather not helping. A considerable amount of small under size trout were seen showing.  Anglers commented that they had to rise and catch a lot of trout before bagging a keeper.

The heaviest trout reported for the week was caught by Joe Ferguson, Knockmore. He was fishing with his son Cian along the Brackwansha shoreline. He had two trout, one for just over 2.2 lbs. and the other for 1.2 lbs., all caught on the Claret Bumble.

Joe and Cian Ferguson, Knockmore, with two trout for over 3 lbs. caught on a Claret Bumble along Brackwansha Shore

John Burke from Foxford fishing with Miriam Barrett, Crossmolina, had 12 trout to the boat before he landed one for just over 1 lb. on a Claret Hopper”.  Miriam also had one trout to the Bumble Hopper.

Stephen Browne from Cloghans caught two trout for just over 1 lb. each on sedges at Massbrook Point.

Francie White, Sligo, had one trout for 1.5 lbs. off the point of Chain outside Castlehill Bay.

Brendan Murphy from Cloghans caught one trout for just over 1 lb. on the Claret Dabbler just outside Cloghans Bay.

Colm Mc Andrew, Lahardane and Tom Timoney, Crossmolina both had a few small trout to the boat, all on sedges and dabblers.

Reports from Lough Conn reveal that one salmon was caught trolling at Massbrook.

A typical September week on the Moy…

Kevin O’Boyle reports from the River Moy…

River Moy Angling Report Week ending 19/09/21

A typical September week, with a few dry days mixed with heavy thundery downpours and cool south easterly winds.  This kept water levels up all week.  Water levels at Ballylahan Bridge on Monday morning stood at 0.682m and rose a few times during the week to their highest on Thursday evening at 1.058m before levelling back to 0.774m by Sunday night. Air temperatures did not exceed 18˚ Celsius for the week with water temperatures hovering at 10˚-12˚ Celsius, normal for the time of year.  Fewer anglers were observed angling due to the conditions although 152 salmon were still recorded caught. Most of these fish were caught on Saturday and Sunday, with a good percentage released from all fisheries.

Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 10 salmon caught for the week.

Mount Falcon Fishery reported 30 salmon for the week.  Simon Walter and partner from Wales had 13 salmon for four days, all caught on spinners and flies. All fish were released.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers reported 8 salmon for the week.

Attymass Anglers reported 1 salmon caught.

Coolcronan Fishery had 11 salmon, all caught on spinners.

Armstrong’s Fishery reported 5 salmon, all caught on worms.

Gannon’s Fishery produced 6 salmon, similarly all caught on worms.

Foxford Fishery reported 16 salmon for the week, caught on various methods.

Great results for anglers fishing out of Courtmacsherry

Another Cod
Another Cod

Mark Gannon reports from Courtmacsherry…

We had super day out on September 15th with plenty of Ling, Cod, Pollack and Coalfish to the boat.

A few days later we were out after bigger quarry. It was a great day of sharking with a great bunch of lads, fair play!

Earlier this week our Belgian and Dutch friends have arrived. What better way to start off the week with some fine ling from the inshore wrecks.

15 years of Holidays at Melview Lodge and the fish and smiles keep coming

Kevin Lyons from Melview Lodge was in touch to tell us how his regular visitors from Blackpool have been getting on…

Neil, Dave, Martyn and Alan were over once again for their usual annual fishing break. This is there 15th year with Kevin at Melview Fishing Lodge and along with over 30 yrs of fishing in Ireland I would say they know a bit about the waters around. It all started with a few hours fishing then a prebaiting session that evening. The following day produced lots of Skimmers, Hybrids and Roach.

That evening another prebait was done and the next day produced Bream, Hybrids, Roach and some cracking Tench. Martyn had a great day using the slider in around 14 / 15 feet catching plenty of Roach and skimmers and some lovely Tench. We will see how the fishing goes for them on their next venue.

ALL FISH RETURNED UNHARMED.

Fishing slow and catches low on a sluggish Sheelin

Lough Sheelin sunset
Another beautiful sunset during the week on Lough sheelin.

As would be expected angling effort on Lough Sheelin has been quite low over the last couple of weeks. An average of 3 to 5 boats per day have been fishing and catches are low. Hoewever, some trout are still being reported taken on dries and others on wets. Best fish reported was around three pounds taken on a dry.

Some of the evenings were warmer than during the mayfly period and rises are very infrequent and ofter on sheltered shores. However, the acrobatic performances of the trout are simply spectacular and great to see. Hopefully, they will come back on the take befor the end of the season.

House Rules

A permit is required to fish Lough Sheelin. Buy your permit online at: shop.fishinginireland.info or from any of the permit distributors listed here.

Catch and release

A catch & release policy is actively encouraged on the lake at all times.

Please note

Extra care is needed when playing and releasing trout during periods of high water temperatures as additional stress at these times will decrease the survival rate of hooked and released fish.

 BYE-LAW 949 strictly prohibits:
  • The taking of any brown trout of less than 36 centimeters.
  • For a person to fish with more than 2 rods at any one time.
  • To fish with more than 4 rods at any one time when there is more than one person on board the boat concerned.
  • For a person to take more than 2 trout per day.
  • All trolling on the lake from March 1st to June 16th (inclusive).
  • To fish or to attempt to take or to fish for, fish of any kind other than during the period from March 1st to October 12th in any year.

Lifejackets

We would ask anglers and all other users to wear life jackets for their own safety as well as it being the law.

Life jackets are required by law – SI No 921 of 2005

Pleasure Craft (Personal Flotation Devices and Operation) (Safety) Regulations 2005. Water rarely gives second chances and a life jacket is just that – it saves your life. Please put on and keep on that life jacket until you are back on dry land.

Euro & Irish crews hit their marks with Wicklow Boat Charters

A group of tourist anglers finished off their week’s fishing with Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters and added a specimen Corkwing Wrasse to the specimen sized 11lb pollock from earlier in the week. They spent a day on a species competition which produced 14 species in total and a day on the wrecks which threw up Pollock, Pouting, Huss and a Black Bream. They departed back to mainland Europe delighted with their week’s fishing and looking forward to next year already…

Then it was over to Irish anglers for the rest of the week where Tope came to the fore. Dan Finlay managed a fine 52lb Tope from Wicklow, while John O’Brien managed a 158cm Tope fishing out of Kilmore Quay.

Kit will be targeting more Big Tope, Spurdog and Huss this coming month with Wreck fishing on Neap tides. Give him a call if you want more info:

Salmon fishing slow in the north-east as seasons end approaches

The historic River Boyne

The northeast rivers have been in need of water for a long time now. Salmon and sea trout fishing has been very difficult with only an occasional fish being reported.

Angling effort low

The Fane, Dee and Glyde are all low and clear with no reports of any salmon caught. Angling effort has been very low. There has been a good run of grilse on the Glyde with good numbers showing for a period in the Castlebellingham and surrounding areas. However, the fish have not been in a taking mood.

Best fish 14lb

The best fish over the past fortnight was a double figured fish,  taken on the Boyne. It was a resident fish and was reported to be around 14lb and caught in the Navan area. Two other fish were reported lower down on the system at 10lbs and 6lbs respectively.

The River Boyne at Navan, Co. Meath
The River Boyne at Navan
Sluggish conditions

Like the other NE rivers, the Boyne is also low and clear, and many places can’t be fished effectively because of the slower flow rate. Fish have too much time to check out the various offerings. Angling effort on the Boyne has also been low. Many regular anglers have stopped fishing due to the tough conditions. As we enter the last week of the 2021 season, the promised rain has not materialised. So it looks like these sluggish conditions will continue right to the end. The last cast is approaching fast and some rain could help finish the season off nicely.

Carrick Coarse Festival Report

Barry Roche of Browning Fishing Ireland and well known match angler Brian Bohan report on the fishing from the Carrick Festival which was held last week, Dave Rowel coming out on top:

Barry: This week I fished the Carrick festival across 5 venues. Day 1 Kiltybarten, day 2 Cloonahee, day 3 the Mudflats, day 4 Heron’s Shore and day 5 on Lough Scur. I’d never been to the first two venues and I was definitely given a lesson.

All in I’ve finished 4th in my section on three days, 3rd on one day and 1st on Heron’s shore where my 22.6kg was also good enough for a match win so that cheered me up.

Thanks to Dave Pickering for running a great festival and I’m looking forward to next year.

The office

Brian Bohan finished third on 5 points, here’s his take on how things went:

Well that’s the Carrick Festival done and dusted, a great week’s fishing and I ended it with 20kgs off The Rocks on Lough Scur, fishing short pole all day. I’ve had three firsts, a second and a third which gave me 8 points with one dropper, so my 3rd was dropped leaving me with 5 points and tied with Ken Johnson. I’ve had slightly better weights all week so that put me in third place overall!
Not bad at weigh in for Brian
Well done Dave Rowel on 1st – a true gent. Great bunch of lads in my section all week, great company. Thanks to David Pickering for running the event!

Excellent fishing at scaled down Muckno event

A quick report from the Lough Muckno festival organising committee on their event last week:

We had five days of staggering fishing, with 12 anglers competing on a friendly mini festival. Having been forced to cancel the Co Monaghan pairs again this year, due to the then Covid restrictions on travel and movement, we facilitated the eager and amiable bunch of Irish anglers already booked in.

We have run out of superlatives when trying to describe the performance of long time Muckno star Conor Browne. To say that he is the best pole angler on this venue is an understatement and his performance this week cemented that view beyond any doubt.
Little did it matter where he drew, as his result was always the same with an average 20kgs on every day, but more significantly the stamp of fish this awesome angler caught each day clearly stood out. An awesome angler with an awesome cumulative weight of just a shade under 100kgs over 5 days.

Conor Browne came up trumps

Runners up Shamie Winters and Gary Doyle (in that order) fished blinders also and showed their true class, on a truly class venue. Well done all three for three magnificent results and a big congratulations and thanks to all who competed in this depleted but wonderful event from an angling point of view.

Special word of thanks to Gavin Walsh for his nice contribution to all competing of a significant sample of outstanding Sensas ground bait. It is interesting to note that this top shelf brand was used by almost all competing in yielding some of the finest results, throughout the full stretch used.

Such is the brilliance of the venue that lowest cumulative weight of the 12 participants exceeded 52kgs and the cumulative weights of the 12 competitors over the 5 days topped .8 of a metric tonne.

To finish our angling exploits for 2021, we will be staging an all method Halloween festival over 3 days and with restrictions now lifted and travel and movement as normal, we hope that a good number of anglers might travel from the UK and Ireland, to enjoy what this wonderful venue has to offer.

Please book on as soon as possible as numbers will be limited and some significant interest is already flagged  – fishing will take place on 23rd 24th and 25th October with fishing each day 11am to 4pm a daily draw at 8.30am.
