Brenton bags near record bream

Brentan's near record breram
The NCFFI report on a cracking bream just shy of the current Irish record caught by Brenton Sweeny:
CM Lakelands Feeder Club member and Irish Feeder Team Manager Brenton Sweeney skipped an any method match to go solo on the feeder yesterday, and what a result!
Aside from a lovely bag of tench and roach Brenton landed this super bream of 11lbs 11oz. The fine specimen bream, synonymous with the lakes in the Cavan & Monaghan region, just falls behind the current Irish record of 12lbs 3oz.
All fish were returned safely to the water alive #catchandrelease

Edenderry anglers come out tops in Shannon Harbour Classic

Joe McEvoy from Edenderry Coarse Angling Club reports on the recent Classic in Shannon Harbour:
Shannon Harbour Classic
August bank holidays usually mean the arrival of boats and barges and the traditional high-nelly bike race for Shannon Harbour residents but with the current restrictions in place this wonderful heritage village was eerily quiet as the thirty anglers fishing the annual classic made their way along the bank.
They came from all over, seasoned Canal Anglers, ex-internationals, locals and Match-men to win the coveted prize of Classic champion. Waterways Ireland had the banks in wonderful condition, MADCAPS and St Rynaghs anglers had the swims prepped and ready and earlier test fishing had given all the signs of a good balanced match.
Incessant rain did little to deter the optimism but within the first hour, it was clear this would be a tough one with the higher pegs in particular not performing.
Tommy Burke on peg one was catching consistently and it continued throughout the match to give him the overall prize ahead of Ron Durkin in second and joint thirds-Alin Apahidean and Joe Nolan.
1. Tommy Burke 8lb 8oz
2. Ron Durkin 7lb 4oz
3. Joe Nolan 7lb
The top there were all from Edenderry Anglers
Patrick Kenny of Shannon Harbour community development as main sponsors presented the prizes to the winners and section winners.
MADCAPS Chairman John Keogh thanked Waterways Ireland, Inland Fisheries Ireland, the local community and the cleaning crews and Anglers for their help and support.

Tide change brings fish back on the feed in Wicklow

Kit Dunne from Wicklow Boat Charters reports that fishing picked up markedly once the recent spring tides abated. Mixing up some regular ground trips targeting tope, huss, hounds etc. with a trip further out to the wrecks, targeting pollock to 10lb, anglers on board had plenty to keep them occupied.

Reefs quiet, few small boats fishing Cork Harbour over long weekend

Cod
Super fight for a decent cod. A beautifully marked fish! Orange paddle tail doing the biz

Jim Clohessy reports from East Cork and Cork Harbour…

28 July: The run the other day was sort of an annual gig with my sister Michelle! We get the unenviable task of catching to order for lunch and dinner! Of course Michelle gets to get a bend in some lovely rods! We hit the reefs first. Headed into an area I’ve not fished this year and were rewarded with some grand pollack and codling. Mackerel, the lunch course, are really scarce. We caught two earlier that we needed for bait for whiting (another order). We worked hard to get enough for lunch. Mackerel shouldn’t be this hard.

Cod
Super fight for a decent cod. A beautifully marked fish! Orange paddle tail doing the biz

01 August: Yesterday’s run was just a run out for a scratch about on lures and a sniff on bait in some different ground.

The reefs are only fishing ok with pockets of fish that have to be searched out. Still, some cracking pollack about with the occasional cod. Cod are seriously scarce this year. There were very few small boats out and about. Surprising given it’s a long weekend.

04 August: Hard to believe the weather is about to turn!
Paul and myself decided on a last minute lure dash. We worked the reefs getting the best drifts using Relief Shading on the Garmin 75cv’s.
We tried old and new ground with mixed results. We had more cod this trip than any other this year so we were well chuffed
Time to go back to the heavy lifting when the weather allows…

Slack fishing for West Cork anglers on De Wall

Monkstown
De Wall

Pete Davis reports for West Cork and District Anglers…

The Westies were back out again on the 1st of August with a fine turnout of 21 members of West Cork and District SAC travelling to fish De Wall in Monkstown. Fair weather for the evening and slack tides made for reasonably comfortable fishing but unfortunately someone forgot to tell the fish! Fishing was very slack with very little coming in from the main channel. When you see Irish internationals and former World champions dipping down the side of the wall with the tiny hooks trying to catch blennies and gobies at Monkstown, that tells its own story! The venue had fished better during the week leading up to it but on the day, it failed to fire… That’s fishing I suppose.

That said, it was a pleasant evening for the most part and the crack was good. A plague of wasps were the only things that were showing a significant interest in peoples baits and Peg 7 who shall remain nameless (me…) continually turned the air blue with howled curses as he defended himself against the persistent pests. Anyone travelling past in a car or jogging watching a grown man dancing round the place swishing and swearing at invisible enemies with one the wifes “borrowed” tea towels like some horrible overweight Morris dancer must have had a good chuckle. The good people of Munster have had enough problems over the years with Black and Yellow striped pests appearing from nowhere in the heights of summer to ruin their day but that’s mostly been confined to the hurling field, we can well do without it when we’re fishing!

After all that, 9pm rolled around and the scores were totalled. In first place was Steven O’Donovan with 13 fish, 10 undersize from the side of the wall and 3 counters. In second place was Jason Santry with Terry O’Donovan coming in in 3rd place.

In the Junior section 13 year old Liam Davis took the honours with some fine angling, picking up his 10 little ones down the side and 2 counters with a card that was only beaten by 1 angler on the night, Junior or Senior.

The big fish prizes went to, for biggest Round Fish, to Terry O’Donovan with a small Conger and for biggest Flat Fish, which went to the second biggest round fish on the night due to none being caught to young Liam Davis.

Fish caught were Conger Eel, Silver Eel, Whiting, Poor Cod, Scad, Black and Rock Gobies.

Pete Davis,
West Cork and District Sea Angling Club

Specimen shark and ling for anglers out of Courtmacsherry

Another Good ling

Skipper Dave Edwards of West Cork Charters reports on his latest adventures…

Much of the last month has been focussed on shark trips with good numbers of Blues and a few Porbeagle showing. Until Monday our best session was 19 Blue and 1 Porbeagle but we absolutely smashed that with a 24-hour wrecking and shark trip bringing 50 Blues to Silver Dawn.

Joe Cooney had the best of 4 specimen sized fish with a large male measuring 205cm to the fork making it our largest male Blue for quite some time.

Not content with such a good shark, Joe also came out on top with the Ling, a superb fish of 38lb 5oz when weighed back onshore. Danny Sweeney came next with a 34lb fish and two further specimen sized Ling were caught.

It’s not often that conditions allow us to take advantage of the small tides to get out to the 40-60 mile wrecks but when it all comes together it’s usually worth it.

Go fishing…

West Cork Charters operates the Silver Dawn, a 41′ Rodman 1250 with twin 430 HP Engines out of Courtmacsherry. The range of fishing found within close range of Courtmacsherry is superb, with trips producing anything between 6 and 15 different species as a norm and in excess of 20 is possible if anglers are prepared to change methods and use different baits and lures throughout their trip. As a rule mackerel, pollock, cod and ling are usually encountered but several species of wrasse along with whiting, pouting, coalfish, bull huss, conger and many more are often added to the catch.
If you do choose to head offshore to sample the superb shark fishing available within 10 miles of Courtmacsherry, there is a very strong chance of encountering blue sharks and an increasing chance of bringing a porbeagle shark to the boat.
