Fine mix of fishing in fine weather out of Cork Harbour

Jim playing a shark
Jim Vs Shark

Jim Clohessy was out with regular fishing mate Paul on his Boat last week and then was invited to fish 2 days on Thresher with Rob and Gavin.

Jim reported great conditions at sea for the most part for a mix of fishing.

Mackerel or the lack thereof was an issue the Saturday. In general, they had to work for every species, but , as Jim said, that’s fishing.

Good bags of roach for CM Lakelands Feeder Club

CM Lakelands Feeder Club report from a recent day out on L. Muckno:
20 anglers fished the clubs match on a very hot day at Lough Muckno today.
There were some very good weights today with Concra Wood fishing particularly well.
Finally, the roach are making a comeback, hence the decent weights on such a hot and sunny day.

Hot temperatures and low water levels impact on angling on the Moy

Michael O’ Driscoll releasing a 2.5 lbs. grilse caught on a Willie Gunn tube on the Ridge Pool

Kevin O’Boyle reports from the River Moy…

River Moy Angling Report week ending 18/07/2021

A very calm warm week with temperatures ranging from 16° Celsius to 25° Celsius making conditions not very suitable for angling. Towards the weekend Ireland headed into a heat wave with high temperatures in the west. A note to anglers to wear protective clothing and sunscreen while outdoors as the UV index will remain high for coming week. Water levels dropped considerably during the week with levels at Ballylahan Bridge on Monday morning reading 1.13 m reducing to 0.28 m on Sunday night.

Three hundred and sixty-three salmon were reported caught for the week. A modest number given the weather with approximately 90% caught at the start of the week with a good percentage released. Very low water across the catchment was reflected in salmon returns.

The Moy Fishery reported 12 salmon for the week, all of which were caught on the Ridge Pool apart from one which was caught on the Freshwater Beat.  Five of the 12 salmon caught were released.

Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 60 grilse, mostly at the start of the week.

Reports from Mount Falcon reveal that 40 salmon were caught.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers had 7 salmon.

Attymass waters produced 3 salmon for the week.

Nick Cousins, Manager of Coolcronan Fishery reported 23 grilse for the week.

Roy Buckley from Byrne’s Fishery had 6 salmon.

George Armstrong reported 8 grilse from Armstrong’s Fishery.

Gannon’s Fishery produced 9 grilse for the week.

Foxford Fishery reports 42 for the week and 11 were returned.

Foxford Salmon Anglers reported 39 grilse for the week.

Reports suggest that at least 11 grilse were caught on the Foxford town beat.

Eighteen salmon were reported from Cloongee Fishery with 4 released.

East Mayo Anglers waters produced 74 salmon of which 29 were released.

At least 11 salmon were caught trolling on Lough Conn for the week, mostly on copper and silver spoons and brown & black Devons.

Grilse plentiful on the Munster Blackwater

FOR WEEK ENDING SUNDAY 18th JULY 2021

Salmon fishing is good, and Grilse are also more plentiful now in the system. The best of salmon is in the middle to lower reaches due mostly to water levels.

Fisheries like Fort William, Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery, Lismore Castle, Blackwater Salmon Fishery and Careysville have been reporting fish.

Paul Whelan at Fort William tells us that the Ellis beat was producing very well last week and plenty of grilse are running.

Advice is to start early and look for fish in the shade as the sun rises higher.

Bandon on its bones, few out angling

Bandon River near Inishannon
Bandon River near Inishannon

FOR WEEK ENDING SUNDAY 18th JULY 2021

The river had shrunk right back to its bones last week and there was little angling as a result.

There are still fish coming in on each tide and there are a few being caught on shrimp and prawn from the town down to the tide.

The current weather looks set to continue into the coming week with no big change forecasted.

Go Fishing…

Bandon Angling Association have set up a guiding service in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Day tickets and club membership are also available.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Little water on the Lee and fishing is slow

Kingsley Weir - River Lee, Cork
Kingsley Weir - River Lee, Cork

FOR WEEK ENDING SUNDAY 18th JULY 2021

Salmon fishing on the River Lee has been very slow for the past few weeks due to the lack of water being released from the Inniscarra Dam. Hundreds of peel and salmon have gathered in the tidal stretches waiting for water.

A few fish are being caught at the Kingsley Weir, mostly returned due to brown tag regulations.  Prawn most productive bait.

Go fishing…

The River Lee drains a catchment of 484 square miles of which much is taken up by two large reservoirs. Salmon Angling is confined to an 8 mile stretch from Inniscarra dam to Cork city.

Lee Salmon Anglers Club

The Lee Salmon Anglers club was established in 1967. It was formed by a group of anglers interested in protecting and promoting the sport of salmon and trout angling on the river Lee. Day tickets available: http://www.leesalmonanglers.ie/

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

Anglers smoked by high temperatures on Lough Currane

Lough Currane 18 July 2021
Lough Currane 18 July 2021

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

16/7/21 The Currane anglers were Barbequed as the wild Atlantic Salmon nosedived to deeper and cooler waters this blazing hot day and as you can see by the photo the skies were clear and temperature well up there, need I say more and that’s your ration for this day.  Wind NNE veered NW and veered ESE this evening, light all day.

Lough Currane 17 July 2021
Lough Currane 17 July 2021

17/7/21 The Currane Barbeque was at full strength as the sun blazed down on a calm Lough Currane as you can see by the picture and if any Currane angler did venture out he may have caught a fish and if he did not, he certainly caught a suntan. Wind Light to calm and variable. Again the photos tell the story

Lough Currane 18 July 2021
Lough Currane 18 July 2021

18/7/21 The Currane Barbeque was again at full strength in opinion even though the temperature gage was indicating 4 degrees less than yesterday, but it still felt like 25c as you can see again by the photo. If there were any Currane barbeque anglers out there good luck to them.

Lough Currane 19 July 2021
Lough Currane 19 July 2021

19/7/21 The Currane Barbeque is still being fuelled with bright sunshine again this day and in the words of one Gillie this morning, no one in their right mind would be fishing in these conditions and his words of wisdom as you can see by the photos were correct. So on that note we head for the backdate department and an apology to Mr. Dermot Martin and the Butler Arms Hotel and at www.butlerarms.com and for good reason because Martin while fishing out of www.butlerarms.com  caught a fine Grilse on the troll on Lough Currane, again my apologies to Mr. Dermot Martin and the Butler Arms Hotel. Wind Light and variable and bright sunshine.

Lough Currane 20 July 2021
Lough Currane 20 July 2021

20/7/21 The heatwave is well in control of the Currane anglers as well as the Wild Salmon and sea trout, you could say both Angler and fish are taking cover.  Bright sunshine all day, wind light and variable.

21/7/21 I don’t know who or what is getting smoked first, the Salmon or the Anglers because this heatwave has got both angler and fish in chequemate. Wind ESE light.

Irish Angling Update 16 July 2021

In general the last week has been pretty typical for summer in Ireland. Temperatures were more or less average for the time of year, with some parts getting plenty of sunshine and others getting some rain. Early this week, however, the rain gave way to warmer sunnier conditions manly in the southern half of the country, while over here in the west and in parts of the south west these wet conditions resulted in many salmon rivers seeing excellent runs of grilse.

In County Cork, salmon and sea trout anglers enjoyed good sport on the Owenmore Fishery, while many fisheries on the Munster Blackwater also reported excellent angling.

Blackwater Fishery
Glenda Powell was fishing her beats on the Blackwater  and had some lovely grilse

In the west, the Moy saw a phenomenal week’s fishing with big numbers of grilse being caught throughout the entire system! Staying west, anglers on the Galway Weir got their share in grilse fishing as well! Amongst the successful anglers was former Fishery Manger, Ned Cusack. Landing two salmon at the age of 102 is an outstanding achievement and therefore is our Catch of the Week! Most people would do well to even reach that age, never mind being able to fish for salmon.

Centurion Ned with son Eamon and his catch of two Atlantic salmon.

Ned also landed an invasive Pacific pink salmon on his afternoon fishing at the weir. Pacific pink salmon are a non-native species to Ireland and, if they become present in sufficient numbers, may negatively impact our native Atlantic Salmon. As a result, Inland Fisheries Ireland has issued an alert and is asking all salmon anglers to be aware of the possibility of catching a Pink Salmon, making sure not to release any back to the water, and to report any sightings to IFI.

We would also like to remind anglers that the final 2021 brown tag draw for Salmon Anglers on the Lower River Lee, No. 5 or Cork District is taking place tonight. Further information on how to apply is available here.

July can be a tough time for trout anglers which was reflected in the few reports we received for the week. However, Mick Flanagan and his boat partner Dermott O’Toole enjoyed decent dry fly fishing on Mount Dalton Lough just outside Mullingar, while the calm cool weather made angling extra difficult for anglers on Lough Conn.

Fine Mount Dalton trout

In the absence of any pike fishing reports we would like to draw your attention to another great pike flytying livestream by Norbert Renaud of L’Ile Verte Fishing Lodge. You can check out the stream here from 7pm Irish time this evening.

In coarse fishing, IASCaire Feeder Fishing Club held the final match of their Covid Rehab League and crowned their top three winners.

Some say there’s no bream left in Ireland, but Arthur Senior Judge, a member of Midland & District Coarse & Pike Anglers (MADCAPS), made a mockery out of that on the Shannon with a super haul of 10 bream for 70+lbs.

A coarse angler’s dream…super haul of bream for 70+ lbs.

With the sea angling season in full swing, we have received numerous excellent reports from all around the coast, including fantastic tope and hound fishing in Wicklow.

Calm seas and great fishing off the Wicklow coast

A great night session producing specimen conger, loads of blues and fine ling was reported from Courtmacsherry, while fishing in West Clare  remains excellent as well.

Red gurnard from West Clare

Super mixed fishing was reported from Galway with sea anglers in Sligo enjoying exciting tope action.

Fine Sligo Bay tope

With the tuna season approaching, anglers in Ireland are taking part in a unique catch, tag and release programme to help Irish and international scientists learn more about the largest tuna in the world – the Atlantic bluefin tuna. Further information about the Tuna CHART programme and a full list of 2021 authorised skippers can be found here.

Bluefin tuna caught, tagged and released on the 2nd of August 2020 in Donegal Bay, Adrian Molloy, authorised tuna skipper.
Bluefin tuna caught, tagged and released on the 2nd of August 2020 in Donegal Bay, Adrian Molloy, authorised tuna skipper.

And now the weather

While parts of Continental Europe experiencing devastating and unprecedented flooding with whole river valleys devastated and many lives lost, Ireland is heading towards a “heat wave” with long hours of sunshine and temperatures peaking close to 30 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country! As the UV index will remain high in the coming days always wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors!

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.
