Dutch anglers enjoy a great week of fishing at Courtmacsherry

Mark Gannon reports from Courtmacsherry…

It was super to have our Dutch friends back fishing with us in Courtmacsherry again! What a fantastic weeks fishing we had- from lots of fine pollack on the reefs, to big ling on the inshore wrecks together with some big Skate and Conger Eels. With Danny catching the fish of the week being a lovely hake.

On one of the days we headed south to target sharks and had a super day- ending up with a total tally of 14 blue Sharks boated! Bert took the biggest shark of the week weighing in at 80lbs. On the last day Nick hooked into a huge fish which took him around the boat 6 times! The fish was taking too much line so we decided to start the engine and chase him! After nearly an hour of fighting the fish with the drag up full Nick’s line eventually chaffed and his rod broke! A dramatic end to a great weeks fishing.

Cooler conditions on Currane but lake levels low

The Butler Pool
The Butler Pool

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

Lough Currane
Lough Currane

22/7/21 Last night Kerry became a tropical County with a night temperature of 20.5c, the last time this happened was 20 years ago and at 2.15 pm today the temperature outside in Caherdaniel was 32c. Admittedly on the lake it would not be as hot as that, but I can tell you one thing you wouldn’t last long on any of the Island’s. just for the record there were anglers on the Butlers pool, I did not hear of any rod benders. Wind light SE light with a few light  gusts.

Lough Currane
Lough Currane

23/7/21 Again today the tropical Currane anglers and fish alike kept well away from the barbeque as temperatures rocketed again today, but there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel as you can see by clicking  www.met.ie/weather-forecast/waterville-kerry  one might say the C&R Inny Anglers will be hoping to journey forth, as will the Salmon. Staying with the weather, yesterday was another tropical day and night as you can see at www.met.ie/latest-reports/observations/yesterday Wind ESE light and variable, bright and sunny all day.

The Butler Pool
The Butler Pool

24/7/21 Again it’s the Currane Barbeque that takes all the Currane headlines and as they say a picture tells the story as you can see by the photo, but it was great to see a few enthusiastic anglers on the World-famous Butler Pool today. Just for the record the temperature reached 30c at 1.45 pm in Caherdaniel, in Waterville the air temperature was 22c this evening at 8 pm. Wind NE light to calm.

25/7/21 The Currane barbeque was the same as yesterday, the air temperature was 25c in the morning in Waterville come afternoon in Caherdaniel it reached 30c with clear skies.

26/7/21 Well the barbeque has gone, and cooler and unsettled weather moves in  at last, we did get a drop of light rain throughout the day, but you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that the Waterville Fishery needs an almighty flood, going by Waterville’s predicted rainfalls My Noble Currane and Inny anglers may have to wait a bit longer especially the C&R Inny manipulators? Wind NNW light to fresh and overcast all day.

27/7/21 All quiet on the SW front and not surprising as the water levels get lower every day, that sums up today news and weather. Wind NNW light with reasonable cloud cover.

28/7/21 The Currane Anglers are frustrated with the low water conditions and that’s not surprising, because trying to catch My Noble Gentlemen in these conditions is like getting blood from a stone, mind you Lough Currane is a great Lake for proving the books wrong so if you have the patience its worth having a crack even though the odds are against you. Wind WNW fresh with reasonable cloud cover with the odd shower.

29/7/21 Well we did get some rain but in fishing language, forget it. I believe there was one boat out by all accounts all was quiet, well going by the phone.

Mullet fishing hotting up in the summer sun

The guys at Irish Mullet Fishing have been sharing photos of some of the cracking mullet they have caught over the past couple of weeks. The warm temperatures seem to have got the mullet into a bit of a frenzy and the lads had some lovely 4lb+ fish to show for their efforts.

Plenty of action for Clare charter boats

The good fishing off the Clare coast continued for charter boats in the area last week. Sean Maguire of Fishing Adventures had a group out targeting Pollack and they certainly managed to get a few good ones despite a heavy downpour putting a dampener on things…

Meanwhile, Luke Aston of the Clare Dragoon welcomed back some overseas visitors for the first time this year and they got straight into the swing of things catching a good range of species over their week’s fishing, including Blues, Porgies, Tope, Huss, and they also managed over 100 Spurs in a day.

Kelpy cod and powerful pollack in Cork Harbour

Con Murphy of Cappoquin with a powerful pollack

A report from saltwater fly fishing guide Richie Ryan detailing his recent experiences fishing in Cork Harbour deserves mention this week:

There is good pollack fishing aboard Sea Hawk at the moment while chucking fluff! Currently, pun intended, sea temperatures have the bass in sulking mode but the ever reliable pollack are obliging as always. The very underrated sport of hooking and landing pollack on a  fly is a thrill to be savoured by all ages. Youngsters can partake where we cheat a little bit by putting the fly in the water and letting the wind and current do the rest. There is a most unusual sensation pulsed through the line whilst a pollack is trying to suck the fly into its mouth. The smallest inquiry, thanks Dr. Jacques Bronkhorst for the appropriate word, can be a 6lb mass of muscle ready to test your angling skills. If you don’t control the fish he will head for the weed and it’s extremely difficult to dislodge him.

Whilst fly fishing for pollack there can be the odd surprise. Having lost one of my favourite people recently, Commander Rory Costello, he came to mind as I headed out guiding the morning after his funeral. I thought of this angler who loved his cod and asked him to send me a decent one that morning. One of the last times we met I had given him some nice fresh cod. As can be seen from the photo, Rory obliged, a fine kelpy specimen for me. The first one I’ve landed this year on the fly! Coincidence or divine intervention? I’m not sure!

Feedermasters fishes well on Muckno

The Irish Feedermasters qualifiers have seen Lough Muckno just continue to improve and improve, with multiple double figures the norm on all sections. Winner Rory Dunne, (an exceptional angler on all methods) netted 24kgs on feeder only, one can but guess at what his weight would have been had all methods been available to this very special angler.
With another top angler Seamus Winters weighing in 14 kgs on an unfancied peg at Upper Concra Wood and not framing even in his mini section, you can get an appreciation of how good this venue is at this time, even with the limitations of having to fish the feeder.
For all Irish anglers looking for a brilliant 5 day ALL METHOD Festival before end of 2021, please look no further than our individual 5 day Festival, mid September and book on as soon as possible.

13kms of illegal nets seized last year

Inland Fisheries Ireland, the state agency responsible for the protection and conservation of freshwater fish and habitats, has revealed that over 13 kilometres of illegal nets were seized by its protection officers and inspectors around the country last year.

250 illegal fishing nets, measuring 13,158 metres in total, were among the 1,287 items seized by the agency on its patrols and inspections in 2020. Other items seized by Inland Fisheries Ireland included spear guns, hand lines, traps, illegally caught fish and stroke hauls which are large-weighted hooks used to impale a fish.

Unless licenced, it is illegal to use a net for catching fish in freshwater due to the ecological damage they cause to fish populations and habitats, such as Wild Atlantic Salmon, Sea Trout and Sea Bass. Due to the severity of the offence and the environmental impact caused by illegal fishing, Inland Fisheries Ireland has a policy of bringing cases involving illegal nets directly to court. Those convicted can face fines and even prison sentences.

A recent court case involving the use of an illegal net for fishing came before Judge David Waters at Listowel District Court on July 1st this year. Tom Allen, with an address of Lixnaw, Co. Kerry, was convicted under Section 96 of the Fisheries Acts 1959 – 2017 on a charge of possession of a net along the River Brick in 2020. Mr. Allen was fined €700 and was also ordered to pay €947 in court costs.

Assistant Inspector at Inland Fisheries Ireland, Darren Halpin, gave evidence in court, outlining how he was responding to a report from a member of the public, which led to the seizure of the illegal net.

In another court case this year involving illegal fishing nets, Gareth Fennel of Kilrush, Co. Clare was convicted on July 20th under Sections 96 and 97 of the Fisheries Consolidation Act 1959.  Appearing before Kilrush District Court in Ennis Courthouse, Mr. Fennel was fined €500 and ordered to pay €530 in costs for possession and use of an illegal net for the purposes of taking salmon. Ray Byrne, a Fisheries Officer with Inland Fisheries Ireland, gave evidence in court.

To report suspicions of illegal fishing, or sightings of illegal nets, members of the public are encouraged to call Inland Fisheries Ireland’s confidential hotline number on 0818 34 74 24, which is open 24 hours a day.
