Pre-spawn pike – tips, lures and methods

Marcin Kantor is back again this week with an entertaining video from a local water where he targets pike on fly…

Marcin’s notes: Here in the video, I am fishing for Pre-Spawn pike using small lures, large lures and flies. The last couple of weeks before they spawn, they shake off the winter moods and start chasing the lures well, as if they just realised the spawning time is around the corner and they’re yet to reach their top condition. Using the recent very busy session, I explain where to look for pre-spawn pike in the lakes and rivers; how to target them; what lures to use; how to work them and which, do small or large lures work better this time of the year. My best lures for this time of the year are sliders, I use SALMO Slider 10cm mainly, other jerk baits like SALMO Fatso 10cm or SALMO Sweeper. Next small 6in paddletail and last but not least large lures like Miuras Mouse to select bigger specimens. So join me once again on my Savage Gear High Rider 170 Float Tub, Lure Fishing and Fly Fishing for Pike. Put these fishing tips to use if you managed to squeeze in another session before the spawn and hopefully you’ll have a good day chasing pre-spawn pike. If you do, however, notice they are spawning (and they will be very soon), let them be for a couple of weeks and don’t fish for them.

Striking gold on the Dodder

Dodder gold

You could almost feel the weight of the world lift slightly from the shoulders of south Dublin anglers, as they finally got to spend some time on the riverbank this week. The River Dodder in Dublin has had a good start to the season, with plenty of eager anglers finally able to get out and fish but, at the same time, stay within their 5km limits.

Water levels have been good and the fish have been feeding well, with weighted nymphs and small spinners doing most of the damage.

Please remember that the river has not been stocked this season, so the majority of fish that get caught will be wild Dodder trout and worth their weight in gold. We encourage anglers to use single hooks on spinners and, once caught, handle these fish with care using wetted hands. If you can’t keep the fish in the water while unhooking, then try and keep them out of the water for as little time as possible.

A belly like butter

Anyone wanting to fish the Dodder should join the club (https://www.facebook.com/dodder.anglers/), it costs an adult €10 for the whole season and €5 for juveniles. Members also have access to the Bohernabreena reservoirs – you wouldn’t get that kind of value anywhere. Membership cards can be purchased through all of the Dublin tackle shops, who will also take orders over the phone and post them out during lockdown.

Bride fishing well for local anglers

Very good trout fishing to be had on the Bride in the Lismore area. Trout are plentiful, no notable catches in terms of size but great sport to be had as the fish are in super condition.

The river is running at normal levels, if slightly high, and clarity of water perfect for angling.

A few more salmon reported from the Lee

Inniscarra Dam
Inniscarra Dam

Very Few fishing on the Blackwater due to the lockdown, but there are a few fresh fish coming up the river. Glenda Powell caught and released a  beauty on the fly from the Island Stream at Kilmurry. Glenda was fishing a Cascade tube with fast sinking tip to get the fly down to the fish. You couldn’t hope to catch a more fresh salmon.

Mullet on bait and fly mark the start of a new season in West Cork

Mullet
Mullet

Mullet are back in many of their haunts around this island and we have our first reports  of succcesful enounters. Both reports are in from West Cork. One was by a local angler fishing method feeder tactics. Over 2 days the lucky angler managed to land 12 fish averaging around 3lb, with the best fish making 4lb. Although bread was the bait only one fish took a bait from the surface.

Mullet
Mullet

Our second report is from well know West Cork angling guide David Norman who had his first fish of the season last week. This time the fish was taken on a fly – but it was a bread pattern.
