Waterville Fishery Report W/E 08/05/19

Vincent Appleby reports from the shores of Lough Currane:

1/5/19 It was another hard day for Currane Anglers and one could say, by the end of their day, they were in dismay on this first of May. Wind NW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.9 mm. Maximum air temperature 12.9 c.

2/5/19 We start at the Bungalow and the North Shore and in the trolling department, Mr. Jonathan MacLean and Mr. George MacLean, caught a fine 9 lbs. Salmon while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com and last but not least a guest fishing with his Gillie also caught a Salmon. Now we head for the late News department, it’s been brought to my attention that I have been failing miserably in my reporting duties because I failed to report 3 Salmon caught in the last 10 days. In my defence if anglers wish to remain anonymous that is their privilege, but saying that in my opinion their letting down the Waterville Fishery and in the words of President Trump! The rumours saying I’m failing in reporting anglers catches is False News. Now today’s weather, wind SW this morning and veered NW in the afternoon and just for the record it made a good drop of heavy rain this morning. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.4 mm. Maximum air temperature 12.7 c.

3/5/19 The Currane Anglers were all quiet on all fronts, be it fly or troll. Wind NE light to fresh, bright and sunny, so on that note we head back to yesterday’s catch and the Gillie and client and for good reason, the facts weren’t  text to me but common sense and knowledge should have told me that it was that flying Scotchmen and renowned fly angler Mr. Alastair Dunbar and his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught their Salmon on the fly, so my apologies to Mr. Alastair Dunbar and thanks to Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] for putting the record straight. Weather as already stated so we go to yesterday’s weather amount of rainfall 5.8 mm. Maximum air temperature 13.4 c.

4/5/19 The Currane anglers were all over the place especially the Currane fly anglers and for good reason, the wind was all over the place as the anglers manipulated their flies and lures in different runs and lies but to no avail on this May Bank Holiday weekend. Wind as already stated and bright sunshine all day. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 13.5 c.

5/5/19 My Noble Currane Anglers again had a tough day of it as the Wild Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout kept their heads down in all departments. Wind W light, bright and sunny and reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 13.8 c.

6/5/19 This Bank Holiday Monday on Lough Currane was all quiet on the SW front in all departments so we will head for some good quality Brown Trout Fishing on the upper Lakes and Lough Derriana, Denis and Ciaran Murphy, while fishing with there Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  caught 8 Brown Trout, their best was in the 1 ½ lbs. Class. Wind light and variable and on the Big Lake / Lough Currane wind was light South. Staying with the upper lakes yon can book your day’s Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout for Lough’s Derriana, Lough Namona and Lough Cloonaghlin, at Currans Mace Supermarket Waterville and at www.facebook.com/CurransmaceWaterville/ Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 12.8 c.

7/5/19 The Currane Anglers were all quiet in the fly and the trolling departments. Wind ESE with reasonable cloud over. Yesterday’s weather, maximum air temperature 13. C.

8/5/19 There was some good fishing on the Waterville Fishery today so straight to the action on Lough Currane,  we will let Local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  tell his client’s story in his own words and I quote, retired Judge David Burton, from Yorkshire, arrived at lunchtime and had approx 25 casts thrown when he hooked his 7 lbs. Salmon and I think this may be the first C&R salmon this season?

Judge David Burton and the first C&R salmon of Currane for 2019 – this rare occurrence wins our Catch of the Week

All I can say is without any fear of contradiction Judge David Burton is as good with the camera as he is with his fly rod!

The salmon being returned

Now from the Lough Currane Zone we head down Stream to the world Famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie UK Angler Mr. Peter Wills was in cracking form and on that note we will let his good friend UK and Waterville Angler Mr. Ken Towner tell the facts of the day on the Pool and again I quote, Peter had one hell of a 20 minute Battle while playing his lightening fresh 10 lbs. Salmon on a Trout rod and I can tell you celebrations are in full swing in the Lobster Bar! Wind NE with good cloud cover with a trace of rain at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 3.3 mm. Maximum air temperature 13.6 c.

Mayfly up on Corrib, buzzer also producing fish

Mayfly hatches are really getting going now on Lough Corrib, with the whitethorn in full bloom too, making for lovely scenery as the hedges around the lake turn white. A report today is of mayfly hatching and trout rising everywhere providing great sport. Air temperatures have been lower than normal, with cold north-easterly winds making it feel quite cool, but the weather is set to improve from the weekend on, and fishing should be more enjoyable by then.

Over the weekend we had very sunny, calm weather, which made wetfly fishing difficult, but buzzer fishing produced some fine fish, particularly around the mid-lake area. Ben Breen and a friend persevered through the sunshine on Sunday and were rewarded with 2 fine trout estimated at 4lbs and close to 6lbs, both sportingly released. Both fish were landed within a few minutes of each other near Ballindiff Bay.

Keep ’em wet! A textbook release from Ben Breen.

Elsewhere, Declan Gibbons reports that the Cornamona Anglers held a wetfly competition on Sunday, which was won by Darren Curran with 3 trout for 8lb 5.6oz. In 2nd was Éamon Gavin with 3 fish for 8lb 0.6oz, 3rd place went to Éamon Molloy with 3 fish for 7lb 4 oz and in 4th place was Tom Doc Sullivan with 3 fish for 6lb 10oz. 32 anglers fished with a catch total of 30 fish and an average of 1lb 9oz per angler.

The arrival of the mayfly, and warmer weather next week should see peak activity on the lake, and hopefully we’ll have a few more reports to share next week. The International Mayfly Festival gets under way in Oughterard this weekend with a junior fishing competition on Saturday. The Taste of the Corrib event will be held in the Lake Hotel on Saturday from 7pm, while the main event, the Dapping Competition, will take place on Sunday. Entries in advance to Tucks Tackle Shop in Oughterard.

Excellent fishing reported from Mask

Ronan Cusack reports excellent fishing on Lough Mask over the past week as fly hatches get into full swing.

Mayfly, Campto Buzzer and prolific hatches of Olives have been reported from most areas across the lake.

Ballinrobe & District Anglers held the David Walsh Memorial Cup on Sunday last. This was a pairs competition and was supported by 64 anglers from across the country. Conditions were tough with blistering sunshine and flat calm. Buzzer and nymph fishing was not allowed which restricted everyone to fishing dries or pulling small wets. First place went to local anglers Adrian Gorman and Kevin Egan with 2 fish for 4.85lbs. In second position was Sean McAvoy and Declan McAlorum with 3 fish for 3.87lbs. Third place went to last year’s winner Aidan Heffernan and Kenneth Greally with 2 fish for 3.56lbs. Heaviest fish prize was won by Fermanagh angler Gareth Foley with a trout of 2.32lbs.

Denis Kelleher and Phil Brooks had a day to remember on Friday last landing 9 fish all over the 13” limit on wet-flies. Phil also fished for a day with Richie Cameron and they finished with 5 trout on wets (best fish 1.75lbs). Sean McAvoy and Declan Murphy had a lively day on Monday boating 11 good trout. Hugh Jameson and 7 angling friends from Northern Ireland stayed at Hall’s angling Centre for 3 days this week and they had over 50 trout for the 3 days.

Weather conditions are to improve for the rest of the week so the outlook remains good.

Nore is brimming with life and lovely trout

Not one for resting on his laurels, a 2nd fish heading for 20lb was landed!

Dan O’Neill reports from Mount Juliet on the River Nore…

06 May: Water is still running slightly high but some trout anglers tried their luck along the stretch with great success. It was great to see the trout in good condition; healthy  and in strong numbers. Looking back over the records, trout average size is up from last season and condition is also much better than this time last year.

Nymphs produced the majority of the trout on the fishery over the weekend. While a pink shrimp and olive nymphs were popular patterns, a peeping caddis claimed a few fish also,

I managed a few casts myself today and had some trout that fought hard and provided great sport over lunch break

Fish seem to be more active around the surface also with some decent trout showing there presence. It’s a lovely time of year to take note of what’s happening on and in the river, then watch how quickly it comes to life becoming a hive of activity. So much going on such as life cycles, food chains and of course angling.
