Easter Sunshine and Soaring Temperatures on Delphi

David McEvoy reports from Delphi Lodge

We have had some very dry weather since our last report and there has been a biting Easterly wind a lot of the time. Water levels dropped off to 5 on the gauge last Saturday (April 13th) and then we had some heavy rain on Saturday night, followed by extreme winds on Sunday and Monday. The river went to 50 briefly on Sunday morning but is now back down to 15 with high temperatures and blue skies. There may be some rain early next week, which would be a big help, especially to get the remaining kelts and smolts out safely to sea.

Good conditions on the Bundorragha

Jim Stafford was the first on the catch sheet since my last update, with a nice fish of approx. 10lbs off Doolough on the 9th. There were a few fish met that week on the river, but none were landed. There were fresh fish still coming in, but they were not co-operating. This changed with the rise in water levels on Sunday morning when Bob Hadden had a fish from the Whin Pool of 8lbs6ozs on a RS Super Snaelda. Shortly afterwards Wolfgang Bohn landed his first ever salmon, a fish of 8lbs 8ozs from the Turn Pool on a Cascade.

A ranched Delphi fish

Angus Sutherland managed to land a fish on Finlough on the 16th, of 6lbs 9ozs on a Willie Gunn and Brian O’Donoghue followed suit on the 18th when he landed one of 7lbs from Wrens Bay on a Silver Shrimp. Fish have been seen entering the river in the last couple of days but with the lower water and sunny days they are much more difficult to tempt.

Hopefully there is a change on the way which should freshen things and help the downstream and upstream migration.

Good fishing marks opening week at Ballisodare

Let’s hope that the rest of 2019 goes as well as our first week of the season this year.

Good water levels for the first day of the season on the Ballisodare saw Sean Gallagher take the our first Salmon, 7lb 8oz, on the fly.
Not to be outdone, John Murray and David Dumican soon followed – both catching 7lb Salmon on the Fly with Michael O Kane also landing a 7lb fish on the worm. Three more similar sized fish were released giving a nice first day haul.

Later through the week the snow and sleet didn’t stop our members with numerous fish caught including Richie Watters’ catch of a beautiful 10lb Salmon, on the worm, followed by Bernard Harte with a 10lb fish on the fly.

Andrew Pearson added to the total for the week with another fly caught 10lb fish.

7 fish were released including Tom Devaney and John Murray who both released a 7lb and 6lb fish.

The Ballisodare Fishery is situated on the Wild Atlantic Way in the picturesque village of Ballisodare, in the North West corner of Ireland, just a 10 minute drive from Sligo Town. The Ballisodare Fishery is one of the premier locations for Salmon Angling in Ireland.

It’s a great place for both novice and experienced anglers to catch salmon. Many anglers have caught their first salmon at Ballisodare, sometimes after spending many days, even weeks and occasionally years trying to catch one in other fisheries.

Whether you fish with fly, worm, shrimp or prawn, Ballisodare is the place where you will maximise your chances of catching this often elusive species, and there is nothing like having a salmon on the end of your line to get the adrenaline flowing.

Big flood in the Bandon no salmon reported

There were no salmon reported for the week.  At the time of writing we have had two days rain resulting in a 4ft flood so prospects are bright for the week ahead.

Bandon Angling Association have set up a guiding service in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Day tickets and club membership are also available.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Good fishing on Mask after tragic spring

Ronan Cusack reports that angling on Mask has finally got well underway after a tragic start to the 2019 season. Well known Ballinrobe angler Sean Maloney lost his life after failing to return from a day’s fishing on Lough Mask in early March. An intensive 3 week search took place involving the Corrib Mask Search and Rescue, An Garda Siochana, angling friends, IFI staff and numerous voluntary diving organisations. Sean’s body was recovered from the lake by members of the Gráinne Úaile Sub Aqua Unit, Ballina and Corrib Mask Search and Rescue on Saturday March 30th. Inland Fisheries Ireland would like to offer sincere sympathy to Sean’s family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Despite the sudden change in weather and drop in air temperatures with the recent easterly winds, Mask has been fishing reasonably well. Reports of early olive hatches in sheltered bays have come in during the week.   Local anglers Paul Loscher and Peter Byrne had 6 trout on wets on Sunday last in cold easterly winds (best fish 1.75lbs, all returned). Denis Kelleher had a nice 2lbs fish on wets on Saturday last; Denis also reported returning numerous undersize trout throughout the day. Ballinrobe angler Richard Cameron reported returning over a dozen trout in Caher Bay last Saturday. Richard said that the majority of trout would not have made the 13” limit, but it was very encouraging to see such a healthy stock of small trout. Tim Hannon and Tommy Foley had 3 fish on wets for a few hours this week (best fish 1.5lbs).

There is a significant improvement in weather forecast for the Easter weekend, so hopefully this should reflect in both angling and fly hatches.

Excellent fishing at Erris for Killybegs Marniners

Stefan Martin reports from the Erris beaches where the Killybegs Mariners took their annual fishing holiday at the weekend…

14 April: Masters Sunday, known for being the most prestigious event in golf, immaculately manicured greens, blinding white sands, the aura of being somewhere special… that’s exactly what being on the Erris beaches is like. Roaring waves being patrolled between the barrels by the gulls, those natural blinding white sands, clean Atlantic winds and always watching the rod tips to start hopping as the large fish take hold of the baits is something special.

We had some great fish over the weekend and the just for fun €20 prizes went to deserving winners.

  • Longest flattie was a 39cm flounder for John Burke.
  • Longest round fish was a draw with 2 Sea trout of 55cm for Declan McGettigan and James McGettigan
  • Declan and James also drew most species along with Dessie O Keeney having 3 species each on the beaches; flounders, Turbots and Trout.

Thanks to all at the Western Strands Hotel for the fantastic service all weekend and the fantastic food and craic in the bar and thanks to Pauric and staff at McDonnells bar always a great night there.

Another great weekend and already looking forward to next season already.

Good pike fishing reported from Shannonbridge area

Adrian Duffy, IFI Limerick, reports from the River Shannon…

I was spoke recently with Piotr, a member  of the Ballinasloe District  Anglers, in the Mid- Shannon region. He and his friends are having excellent pike fishing in the Shannonbridge area this month.

pike
Piotr is getting lots of pike including this fine fish on dead bait.

Water levels are dropping on the River Shannon following weeks of high water, and thankfully the recent rain storms have not seen the levels rise too much again. This should  improve  angling  even  further as we are expecting  a busy Easter weekend.

Munster Blackwater coming back into order after weekend floods

Fishing has slowed down last week with very little happening and little or no catches reported. At the weekend the weather turned wet and windy especially on Sunday. Very heavy rain continued through the early part of this week week which saw a big rise in levels putting the river out of order. Water levels were up to 3m at the Ballyduff gauge on 16 April and are currently down to 1m and falling, so fishing should pick up again in the coming days.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
