Stefan Martin reports from the Erris beaches where the Killybegs Mariners took their annual fishing holiday at the weekend…

14 April: Masters Sunday, known for being the most prestigious event in golf, immaculately manicured greens, blinding white sands, the aura of being somewhere special… that’s exactly what being on the Erris beaches is like. Roaring waves being patrolled between the barrels by the gulls, those natural blinding white sands, clean Atlantic winds and always watching the rod tips to start hopping as the large fish take hold of the baits is something special.

We had some great fish over the weekend and the just for fun €20 prizes went to deserving winners.

  • Longest flattie was a 39cm flounder for John Burke.
  • Longest round fish was a draw with 2 Sea trout of 55cm for Declan McGettigan and James McGettigan
  • Declan and James also drew most species along with Dessie O Keeney having 3 species each on the beaches; flounders, Turbots and Trout.

Thanks to all at the Western Strands Hotel for the fantastic service all weekend and the fantastic food and craic in the bar and thanks to Pauric and staff at McDonnells bar always a great night there.

Another great weekend and already looking forward to next season already.
