Sharks, spurs and surprise catches in west Clare

Tope

Skipper Luke Aston says the current good weather has brought lovely fishing conditions, with calm seas and good drifting over the reefs producing good steady fishing for whitefish and spurs, with the occasional surprise like this cracking John Dory.

The weather has made wildlife watching much better too, with some basking sharks giving spectacular leaping displays close to the boat at Loop Head this week. Check out Luke’s Facebook page here for the video clip.

Prior to this week, the weather has been quite windy, with just the odd day giving a window to get out, and when they did get out they found plenty of spurdog outside Loop Head, with good pollack fishing too. Days in the estuary saw plenty of thornback ray and bull huss, and a couple of nice tope too.

The start of the month saw some more settled weather before Storm Floris, and a day drifting on the reefs produced plenty of fish, but the suggestion of shark fishing saw Luke put out a shark trace. Without any rubby dubby, they still managed 4 shark in two hours, boating the smaller two porbeagle and releasing the big fish in the water.

Go fishing…

Team Ireland U15 on world stage!

This report from the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland:

The youngest squad among 10 nations, our U15 Team Ireland Youth‘s stepped onto the global stage for the very first time — and what an experience it’s been! They might have finished at the bottom of the table this time, but they’ve gained priceless insight, built friendships, and shown the world their Irish determination.

This is just the beginning, a bright young team to watch out for in the future!

Massive credit to Youth Team Manager Adrian Browne for guiding them here through dedicated development days, to the incredible parents supporting them from the bank, and to our fantastic sponsors for helping make this dream possible.

Inland Fisheries Ireland are proud to sponsor Irish underage teams as they represent Ireland at international events held overseas.

Team Ireland U20 rank a respectable 8th at Worlds

This report from the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland:

After the final leg of the World Youth Angling Championships, our U20 squad secured 8th place a respectable finish against the 12 best float fishing youth teams on the planet — no small achievement! Fishing on Spain’s prolific Guadiana River meant speed fishing at another level — 4 or 5 fish a minute, with catches of small carassio numbering in the hundreds and the odd bonus carp.

Experience shone through with John Browne and Brian Clark earning 4th in their sections — with others gaining valuable experience for next year’s event in France.

Youth Team Manager Adrian Browne reflected: “Overall, it’s a disappointing end to the week, and some bad decisions on the day meant we could have done better. But the effort and commitment were outstanding. A huge thank you to the boys for their tireless work in the heat, to the parents, and to Nick and Charlie for their support on the bank.”

The NCFFI wishes to thank Youth Team Manager Adrian Browne for his commitment to the squad, to the dedicated parents on the bank and to the sponsors for their incredible support in helping them to get there.

The website is now selling salmon angling at Blackwater Valley Fishery, which provides visitors with a peaceful location in one of the most scenic areas along the Blackwater River, primarily on beats covering both the mid and lower reaches of the river.

Too many species to name for Ringsend Irishtown AC in Kerry

The Ringsend Irishtown Angling Club had their annual visit to County Kerry recently, fishing every type of mark the Kingdom had to offer them – shallow strands, deepwater rock marks, harbours and jetties – and everything in between.

This was the first year that the junior members came along and every angler there caught plenty of fish during the trip – too many to name in fact, as we can see from the variety on their photos.

Salmon fishing yielding mixed results on the Blackwater

ballyduff bridge

Results on the Munster Blackwater were varied this past week depending on the areas that reports were received on.

Some beats are experiencing improvements in numbers as previously reported but salmon caught are very small in size.

In contradiction, other beats along the system report that fishing is poor with no substance to the run of grilse that came in mid-July and overall, for the time of year, the numbers of fish observed are down in a lot of fisheries.

Notice: Following news of a fish kill between Mallow and Roskeen Bridge earlier this week anglers are requested to refrain from fishing in the affected stretch of river.

Senan’s intro to BFS fishing for wild brown trout

Senan Stanley was on the water once again this week to try something new. Ever eager to try innovative approaches to Irish waters – in his latest YouTube video, Senan takes to a trout stream to try some BFS fishing.

BFS stands for Bait Finesse System. This system is made up of a baitcasting reel with a shallow lightweight spool and a light or ultralight action baitcaster rod. This setup allows the angler to effectively fish super lightweight lures in the 1g to 7g weight range, something that has not previously been possible with a traditional baitcasting setup.

Tiny trout can fight like bluefin tuna on a BFS setup, making catching 10 inchers a whole lot of fun in a small stream!

In this video, Senan shows us

  • How to effectively catch trout using BFS gear
  • Which ultralight lures work best for wild brown trout
  • Real-time catches in a crystal-clear river
  • Tips for fishing pressured or wild trout on finesse setups

Don’t forget to like and subscribe to the channel to help Senan so that he can keep on producing his fantastic videos.

Edenderry fishing well for club members

This report from the Edenderry Coarse Angling Club:
Great to see some depth again on the stretch, with most anglers getting 5 foot down the track , I thought the canal would have fished a lot better today . It was difficult for most with the sun , but the wind gave a lovely ripple on the canal.
Club stalwart Tommy Burke took the honours with two early tench from the middle of the section and put his head down for roach for the remainder of the match – and the back up weights weren’t too bad.
Overall
  • 1. Tommy Burke 10-09
  • 2. Dean Murray 8-08
  • 3. Alan Larkin 7-04
  • 4. Mick Oddy 4-02.
