Salmon to 14lb on the Ilen

10 salmon landed for the week. Best was 14lbs landed by a club angler on a worm.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

The River Lee drains a catchment of 484 square miles of which much is taken up by two large reservoirs. Salmon Angling is confined to an 8 mile stretch from Inniscarra dam to Cork city.

Lee Salmon Anglers Club

The Lee Salmon Anglers club was established in 1967. It was formed by a group of anglers interested in protecting and promoting the sport of salmon and trout angling on the river Lee. Day tickets available: http://www.leesalmonanglers.ie/

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

A few salmon and sea trout reported from the Bandon

There were 5 salmon reported on the river last week, these were caught between Bandon and Enniskeane.

There were a number of sea trout caught also just upstream of the weir.

There was a good bit of water in the river following Friday’s rain, but the river has dropped again since then.

Bandon Angling Association have set up a guiding service in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Day tickets and club membership are also available.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Mayfly up on Conn

Delan Cooke from our Ballina office reports that trout fishing on Conn and Cullin has kicked off with the Mayfly up…

15 May: Last weekend we welcomed 53 anglers from throughout Ireland but mainly from the Cavan/Monaghan area with a smattering of visitors from Northern Ireland. These anglers had come to fish the annual Albert Berry competition on Lough Cullin. The competition is held over 2 days and tends to focus, primarily, on Lough Cullin as this is where the most reliable mayfly hatches are likely to occur in the early part of the season.

Although mayfly were evident throughout the lake, hatches were a little patchy and trout did not appear to be feeding on them. However, there were also good hatches of olive and this is how the winners, Walter and Susan Byrne found success. They fished the mid-lake using small, dry bumble olives and had 15 trout over the two days weighing 18.7 lbs.

In second place were Gary McLure and Alan Lutton with8 trout for 9lbs. The best fish was caught by Davy Ellis and weighed 3.7lbs, a fine fish for L. Cullin.

The total catch for the Albert Berry cup weekend was 77 trout.

Lough Conn has also begun to produce some good fishing and the first of the proper Mayfly hatches have commenced, mainly in Castlehill bay and the North end of the lake.

Orla Walsh had a lovely trout on a dry olive in Cloghan’s Bay on Thursday as well as a few fish on the 30 – 32cm range.

Eamonn Cooke and Gordon Milward from Wicklow had a great day fishing in Tolan’s Bay and the mouth of the Deel. Persistant hatches of Mayfly kept the trout interested and active at the surface throughout the day and they accounted for 13 decent trout, all of which were returned.

John Griffin from Crossmolina had 4 good trout in the 35cm range on a mayfly emerger, also in the bat at the mouth of the Deel.

 Go fishing…

The vast majority of trout caught on Lough Conn are taken on wet flies when trout are moving near the surface during the seasonal fly hatches, even in the valley periods, between hatches, it is nearly always possible to attract the attention of a trout to a team of well presented wet flies.

Good run of spring salmon continues at Delphi

David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery…

15 May: The good run of Spring fish here at Delphi continues, with fish being landed almost every day. Water conditions have been excellent with the river not falling below 25. Temperatures are still trying to creep up but only slowly. It gets milder one day and then cold the next. We even had a grass min of  -2.4 on Friday night.

salmon
Ralph Dietrich on Finlough with his salmon of 8lbs 3ozs on a Green Highlander

First fish for May was taken by Ralph Dietrich on the 1st, off Finlough of 8lbs 3ozs on a Green Highlander. Werner also had two, one of approx. 6.5lbs and the other approx. 7lbs. Both were taken in the Waterfall on a Black and Orange Conehead. There were three on the 2ndwith Dominic Cox having two, one of 10lbs and the other of approx. 8lbs. They were taken in the Horseshoe and Finlough respectively, both on Ally Shrimps. Fredo Dittrich also had a fish off Finlough of 7lbs on a Delphi Collie. Werner had two more, one on the 3rdfrom the Waterfall on a Green Highlander of 10lbs 9ozs and one on the 4th, of approx. 9.5lbs, again same pool, same fly. Markus Merz also had a nice fish of 9lbs 13ozs off the Stream on Finlough on a Willie Gunn.

salmon
Urs with a lovely looking fish

On the 5ththere was one landed and that fell to Urs, who had made contact with quite a few fish during the week, but none stuck, which is most unusual with Springers. Finally, afish took and stuck in the Rock Pool and Urs having left his net in the car, tried to attract the attention of a passing cyclist by waving and the cyclist duly waved back and kept going, much to Urs’ dismay. Shortly afterwards Jonathan Clesham who worked as a Ghillie here in his younger days was passing and he immediately recognised an angler in distress, stopped, got the net and proceeded to net the fish for a very happy Urs. The fish weighed in at 10lbs 3ozs and was taken on a Delphi Collie.

salmon
Ken Williams on Doo Lough with his wild fish, just before release #CPRsavesfish

Sunday brought another busy week and a new batch of enthusiastic anglers. First, off the mark was Joseph Martin who had a lovely fish of approx. 10.5lbs in the Whin Pool on a Zonker. This was followed later that evening when I landed a fish of 9lbs 13ozs in the Whin Pool on a Delphi Collie. Shortly afterwards Tim Sprakes landed his first ever salmon in the Bridge Pool. The fish weighed in at 8lbs and was taken on a Sunray Shadow. We had nothing on the 7thand then on the 8th, Frank Byrne landed his first ever salmon, weighing in at 5lbs 4ozs from the Goat Pool on a Mini Tube. Jakob also had a fish of 7lbs 8ozs on Finlough on a Delphi Collie.

We had three on the 9th, the first, a first ever taken by Justin Ferran in the Whin Pool on a Cascade, weighing in at 11lbs. Michael Wade had a nice fish of 8lbs 4ozs off Finlough on a Collie Dog and Robert Gillespie finished off the day, with a fish of 8lbs from the Bridge Pool on a Delphi Collie. There were four landed on the 10th, with Bernd being first off the mark, with a fish of approx. 7lbs from Morrisons on a Cascade. In the afternoon, Jakob and Josef Bauer had fish a fish each off Finlough, of 9lbs 5ozs and 6lbs 7ozs respectively, both on Delphi Collie’s. This was Josef’s first ever salmon! Ken Williams also had a good fish of approx. 11lbs off Doolough. The following two days despite very good water saw only one landed each day. James Finn had one of 8lbs 10ozs in the Whin Pool on a Delphi Collie and Christian Raissle had one of 8lbs 2ozs off Finlough on a Silver Wilkinson Tube.

Sunday saw the arrival of the week 20 brigade, sadly with the notably exception of John Tappin and co. John was ill recently and unable to travel. John has been here in week 20 for over 25 years now and there are many great memories not all fishing related I might add. All here wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back shortly.

Water levels are tapered down to 30 on Sunday. Brendan Wilson landed a lovely fish in the afternoon in the Meadow Pool of approx. 9.5lbs on a Collie Dog. Yesterday was unusual in that we had four, all in the morning and all off the river. Mike Hammes on his first trip to Delphi landed two fish. The first was in the Whin Pool on a Cascade and weighed in at approx. 8lbs. He followed this up shortly afterwards with a fine fish of 11lbs 2ozs from the Bridge pool on a Corps Nymph. Mike was in dreamland and was rather happy to say the least! Hugh Brennan then had a fish of approx. 5lbs, also From the Bridge Pool and, also on a Corps Nymph. Ian Carroll finished the morning with a nice fish of approx. 10lbs from the Meadow Pool on a Collie Dog.

Spring salmon
Another wild fish ready for release

The river is now at 25 and we do have some misty rain this morning which may put it up a little. Having said that all fish landed yesterday were sea liced, so there are fish still running. Total for the year is now 103.

Just a reminder that our new Syndication Scheme is selling well, especially the spring weeks so anyone that is interested should contact us, here at Delphi.

On Wednesday last Danny Joy had a fish of 12lbs and on Thursday Colm Heffernan has a fish of 11lbs, both were caught spinning. There was also a good fish of 14lbs caught at Johnson’s fishery last weekend by a visiting angler, the same angler also lost a good fish on the same day. There were several other fish landed ranging from 5.5lbs to 9lbs.

Seatrout have been slow to make an appearance this year, however there have been a few reports of seatrout to 3lbs caught spinning at Heffernan’s fishery.

The river is currently at 1.4m after rising again slightly from the rain made last Friday, however it is once again dropping fast and with the forecast looking settled and dry the coming week looks promising.

Ireland strike gold on Mask with plenty of fish about

Ronan Cusack reports on a big week on Lough Mask, where the Spring International Competition was held on Friday.

Massive congratulations to captain Mike Keady and his team for their outstanding performance in the ITFFA Spring International on Friday last. The lads beat Wales into second place by a huge margin of 20 trout. The Irish team recorded a total of 45 trout measuring a total of 1552.3cm. In second place were team Wales with 25 fish measuring 905.8cm. Third position went to team England with 23 trout measuring 805.3cm and in fourth place were team Scotland with 20 trout measuring 681.2cm.

The top rod and winner of the much sought after brown bowl was the well-known Co. Clare angler David Egan. David had the company of top international and former world champion Mr Iain Barr of team England in his boat for the day. The day got off to a shaky start with David falling behind with 2 trout to Iain’s 6 by 13:00.  In David’s own words “when the sun came out after lunch I knew I had him” and he surely did. David finished off the day with 8 trout to Iain’s 6.  Unfortunately Iian had to settle for second place this time.  David is no stranger to silverware, as he won the interprovincial on Mask in 2017 and a national title on Corrib in 2004.  The event was a huge success on all fronts and congratulations to Ballinrobe and District Anglers for hosting the competition.

The lake is fishing well at the moment with plenty of olives and buzzer to keep trout interested. Mick Dunne from Tourmakeady had 8 trout pulling wets among the islands on Sunday last (best fish 1.75lbs). Toby Gibbons and Sean Moogan from Westport had a red-letter day on Saturday with 13 trout exceeding the 13” limit (best fish 3lbs, all released). Regular visitors to our shores Mr John Webb and Mike Donaghy from Scotland fished with Ronan Cusack on Tuesday and they had 6 trout on a combination of wet and dry olives (best fish 2.25lbs, all released). UK anglers Howard Smith and his fishing partner Mike fished buzzers on Sunday in very bright conditions and they finished with 4 (best fish 2.75lbs, all released).
