New research project into sharks, skates and rays looking for angler feedback

Have you caught a shark, skate or ray in Ireland? It doesn’t have to be a monster. From Spurdogs to Stingrays and Thornbacks to Threshers, even the humble Dogfish. If you have ever caught a shark, skate or ray we want to hear your opinions. Complete our short survey and you could win an angling voucher worth €50.

‘Who are we?’ you may ask. Sharks le Chéile is a new initiative set up by researchers at Trinity College Dublin, in partnership with Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Marine Institute, to bring together members of the angling community and other public stakeholders with scientists studying sharks, skates and rays around Ireland. One of our main aims is to promote sustainable angling and better protect our unique shark and ray resources.

As part of this goal, we’re currently running a survey covering the angling practices, target species, conservation views and angling-related expenditure for anyone who catches or targets sharks, skates or rays in Irish waters.

We need your views to help us to understand which species are most important to anglers, as well as the benefits of angling to coastal communities and the wider economy, and the opinions of the angling community on important issues such as conservation and promotion of angling.

Your voice on key issues matters to us and will be taken into account in future management decisions. All entrants will be in with a chance to win one of twenty-five €50 vouchers from participating angling stores, so you might just bag a prize in the process.

Munster Blackwater at Lismore
Munster Blackwater at Lismore

The Munster Blackwater has risen substantially and although a lot of fish are now present, they are on the move proving difficult to catch.

Lots of reports have been received that the salmon are small in size (2 kgs) but fresh and full of spirit.

Some better sized fish are still mixed in the catch up to 4kgs, but the small ones can be seen daily leaping in some of the beats.

The levels having been dropping since Monday night, so hopefully when the river levels off this week the fishing will come good.

Krakens make the trip south for round 7 of their league

Match 7 for the Ulster Krakens summer league saw them take their annual pilgrimage to Arklow South Beach, always a popular venue for their members. However, forecasts for an east wind somewhat dampened expectations for the thirteen competitors who made the trip down.

The match started slowly, with anglers scratching around for the odd fish here and there. Small gurnards and even a small tope featured in early catches before whiting and a few juvenile hounds made an appearance.

But things never really kicked off, and anglers were left to pick up whatever they could get to make up the numbers. The fish of the match and indeed the only hound of note was landed expertly by Pamela on peg 4, measuring 90cm.

Ally Nicholl made good use of his end peg to land 9 fish, including a couple of dogfish, which were few and far between on the night, to take the win.

Stephen Kinning and David Rainey both had a late run of whiting to take a very credible 2nd and 5th place respectively on a very challenging night.

Final Results were:
1st Ally Nicholl 9 fish
2nd Stephen Kinning 9 fish
3rd Andy McCallion 7 fish
4th Raymond McCann 8 fish
5th David Rainey. 6 fish
