Darragh McGee of Clew Bay Charters in Newport, Co. Mayo has what we think is the first  skate caught on Clew Bay this year. Not only that but its size qualifies it for a specimen. Darragh measured the big fish at 201cm (L) ×148cm (W) giving a chart weight of 157lbs.

Angler poses with 22lb pike
Geoff Anderson with a cracking 22lb Pike

Phil Rogers and friend Geoff Anderson from the UK were over for a 5 day Pike fishing trip with Kevin of Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford. Kevin has all the news on how they’re getting on…

Angler poses with 22lb pike
Geoff Anderson with a cracking 22lb Pike

Phil is a regular at Melview Lodge and is normally here every year for the Bream and Tench fishing but decided to bring a mate and try his hand at the Pike fishing in Ireland. Again with high water levels and changing weather conditions things were not perfect but they still managed to produce some Pike, fishing with various dead baits we fished two different venues and both managed to produce fish. Kevin said, I had the pleasure of guiding and fishing with them on three of their trips out and to start off with it was a bit slow but still a good laugh. It was all smiles when Phil managed to catch his first Pike in Ireland, which fell to a dead roach.

Then it was the turn of his mate Geoff who managed a couple of cracking Pike to 22lb on Mackerel. The Pike trip was rounded off nicely when I caught a Trout of over 7 lbs which put a smile on my face for the rest of the session.

The postponed first leg of the Tubertini West Coast Shore League was held on Renvyle beach last Saturday evening, with fishing from 6-10pm. 15 senior anglers were able to make the competition, postponed 4 weeks because of stormy weather in late February, and hosted by Galway Bay SAC. Fishing on the night was reasonably good, with 93 fish caught, including coalfish, dogfish, rockling and pollack. The winner on the night was Aidan O’Halloran from Lisdoonvarna-Fanore SAC, with 19 fish for 450 points. Second place went to a new face on the competition scene, Remigijus Zukauskas from Galway Bay SAC, with 7 fish for 269 points. Shane Gilvarry from Killala BC was third, with 10 fish for 269 points. The winning junior angler was Cian Deane from Galway Buccaneers SAC, with 3 fish for 120 points. Second in the juniors was Rory O’Sullivan (Galway Bay) and third was Billy Gilvarry (Killala).

Aidan now takes an early lead in the shore league with 101 points, but with 7 legs to come the lead positions will be hotly contested. With 6 of 8 scores to count, there is still plenty of time to join the competition, and the next leg is due to be held on May 27th at Roundstone.

Galway Bay SAC have been very active in developing new members and helping them improve their angling skills this year, and ran a rig-tying evening last week in Galway Aquarium, where ne members learned how to tie some of the more important traces used in sea angling. Senior members Pete Atkins and Brian Reidy were on hand to demonstrate and help with hands-on learning, which will be a great help to get these anglers catching more fish. Further training sessions are planned, and the clubs always welcomes new members and inquiries. For more information contact club secretary Brian Reidy at [email protected]

Sean and Bill form Dublin were once again up at Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford for another Pike fishing trip. Things started a little slow for them but as the days went on things could only get better for the pair.

Another good double for Sean

Using various dead baiting tactics they managed to catch some cracking Pike, with the weather changing from one extreme to the other conditions were far from perfect for them. Kevin said, Sean and Bill have been to Melview Lodge many times and the weather conditions were not going to put these guys off.

It came good in the end for them as they managed to land some cracking Pike despite the changing weather conditions, well done lads see you again soon.

Big bass comes early for Wexford angler

Angler revives bass prior to release
The big bass was tagged and released

Sean Jordan, of Bass Fishing Wexford,  reports on a great bass trip where he had fish to 78cm…

“Early & late for the big girls”

One of the great south Wexford bass anglers of yesteryear used to always quip… Sadly long departed now, but his voice, and words came back to haunt me this week when a magnificent 78cm slid ashore, well in excess of 11lb’s, and in top condition.

Everyone knows about late season bass for sure, but a good friend of mine who fishes hard all year with lures has got his biggest bass in March, a fish of just under 14 lb’s!!  And I’ll add to that, last March (2016), I spotted without a doubt the largest bass I’ve seen in a few years, cruising an isolated open sandy beach in bright sunshine The bass was well over 80cm, and swan within feet of me before being spooked, ggrrrr…. (But, it’s hard not to stand out in those places).

Is there a case of body mass making larger specimens more tolerant of cooler water ? Maybe, who can say for sure?  They don’t always play by the rules many anglers go by. My own experiences with specimens, as I’ve said before, is that they can turn up at anytime, anywhere, usually when I’ve least expected them…

Angler revives bass prior to release
The big bass was tagged and released

After a 10 minute battle with 3 long searing runs she was quickly measured, tagged, 4-5 scales taken for sampling, and released…

A bass wins away after release
Away she goes…

The scale’s will go for sampling for the IFI’s National Bass Programme     Feedback from a 79 cm fish I sent in from 2015 was that the fish was spawned @ 2002, & was 13 + years old, but growth age/rates can vary greatly, another sample from a fish I caught in 2015, well offshore was recorded at 61 cm, was spawned @ 1998, & was 17+ years old. The larger bass are almost all invariably females, & in keeping with females of other species they like to keep their age a bit of a mystery

Ardmore anglers report excellent shore fishing

Angler at Ardmore with a bass
Stan with his bass

Ger Dunne and Stan Ryan had a great day out in Ardmore on Tuesday. The wind was due to change from an easterly to a southerly direction on Monday night. This coincided with a very high tide. Armed with freshly dug lug they started fishing at 3pm, casting into a beautiful rolling surf. Almost immediately Stan’s rod had a savage take but he missed the fish. Ger’s rod then buckled as he connected with a very strong bass that gave him a great fight. This fish was in superb condition and was his best bass so far.

Soon afterwards Stan landed a similar fish. The pair fished until 7.30pm, landing 5 fish in total and losing 4 others.

Not content with this they were back on the beach for the night shift –  from 12.30-3.30 am. The wind had turned westerly and was accompanied by heavy rain. Two more bass were landed and several lost.  Coalies and flounder completed a fantastic outing. All fish were returned to fight another day.

Stan tells us that the fishing in the Ardmore area is really excellent at the moment.

River Inny fishing well, good pike landed

A good double figure pike
John With his big pike, just short of 20lb

Mick Flanagan reports on a pike fishing trip on Lough Derravaragh and the River Inny…

Rob Connor from the Horseleap area and pal John Burns of Killaloo had a day to remember last week on the River Inny. John works in Tullamore General Hospital and was enjoying a days fishing for his birthday. The River Inny really produced a few cracking pike on the day including a fish just short of the magical 20lbs mark.

A good double figure pike

The fish rattled the scales at 19lbs 5oz, and was in mint condition. The lads had another pike from the river which was also well into double figures. This pike fell to a Screaming reels deadbait as when we had banked the boat for lunch.
