Mostly jacks at final National Pike Championships qualifier

John Chambers of the Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs reports on the last qualifier of the 2016/17 National Pike Championships – the Stewards Qualifier. It was fished over the weekend on a small County Cavan lake that usually produces 20, 30 and 40 lb bags. However, over in days leading up to the competition there had been a lot of rain and water levels were up several feet. This usually puts pike off and Sunday was no exception. It was very hard going with only small numbers jacks on the feed.

West Cork anglers make most of the fishing at east Cork venue

Biggest fish went to Danny O Riordan for a 72cm Painted Ray
Biggest fish went to Danny O Riordan for a 72cm Painted Ray

Terry O Donovan reports on the West Cork and District SAC match at Ballinwilling on Saturday…

Ballinwilling
Ballinwilling

First of all we would like to say a huge welcome to our two new members Mark and Denis who made the trip to East Cork to fish with us and also welcome back to some familiar faces from past seasons, James Kiniry and SOD.

Another mishap with the weather saw the back up venue being brought into play, with Ballybranigan having been the original venue but having come out a bit worse for wear from recent storms was unfishable. Ballinwilling was the back up venue and 16 anglers turned out for check in and we were greeted by perfect conditions. A cold off shore breeze with some colour in the water and no weed.

Fishing started at 6pm and it was patchy from the off with anglers struggling to find any rhythm to their catches. Rory on the end peg put some good numbers on his card in the first 2 hours with Derek hot on his heels. New member Mark certainly wasn’t showing signs of shyness by getting straight down to business putting double figures on his score card. Oskar was also into the swing of things from the off in the middle of the beach. In the last hour SOD had found some numbers and put some double shots on his card that would see him do well.

Biggest fish went to Danny O Riordan for a 72cm Painted Ray
Biggest fish went to Danny O Riordan for a 72cm Painted Ray

As the final whistle went and lines were reeled in the early lead that Rory had enjoyed had been eaten into by Derek and it finished very close with not even an undersize fish between them.
A huge well done to Derek!

The top ten

  • 1st Derek Kenrick 14 fish 419 points
  • 2nd Rory O’Connor 14 fish 411 points
  • 3rd Stephen SOD O’Donovan 12 fish
  • 4th Mark O Sullivan
  • 5th Oskar Derdowski
  • 6th Mike Carlton
  • 7th Gearoid McCarthy
  • 8th Graham Flanagan
  • 9th Barry O Rourke
  • 10th Stan Topelewski

Biggest fish went to Danny O Riordan for a 72cm Painted Ray. Well done to Danny.
A total of 102 fish were caught and released and catches were made up of Coalies, Whiting, Codling, Flounder, Rockling, Dogfish and Painted Ray.

Currane bedevilled by windy weather

Vincent Appleby reports on yet another windy week in the Kingdom of Kerry where anglers make serious efforts between the gales but were not rewarded by the thrill of connecting with a fresh salmon…

02 March:  The weather takes the headlines again and for good reason, there was a strong Southerly wind blowing across the lake with heavy rain at times and just for the record it make a small flood, come afternoon the wind did drop but there wasn’t any reports of any rod benders. Amount of rainfall yesterday 5.3mm.

03 March:  There were 3 boats out on the Waters of Lough Currane today, anglers hammered the North Shore out to the Grassy and into the Mouth of the Commeragh and back down to the Morgan’s Rock and what did they get for their hard efforts, absolutely nothing and they call themselves professionals!! I agree they are in the bars! as they try to convince themselves that they are better than what they actually are and if I’m wrong prove it, I would be delighted to eat humble pie! So who will stand and deliver or I should say catch and deliver! Wind North light and overcast with heavy rain at times. Amount of rainfall yesterday 13.5 mm.

04 March:  Lough Currane Anglers took another rest day in the angling and boatmanship department and who could blame them! You take this morning there was a strong and gusty North wind blowing and when I say strong I mean strong, in fact some of the gusts were dam dangerous! but come afternoon the wind dropped and you could say my fellow anglers dropped out of the race as the Wild Atlantic Salmon gave we the Anglers a Winston Churchill. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 30.2mm.

05 March:  On today’s notes there will be no sarcasm and we will stick to the facts and they are as follows, anglers were left stranded on the shoreline and for good reason, Kerry was on a yellow alert and was it wild, with a strong wind and violent gusts from NW as it battered Lough Currane and in the words of local gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com No News No Boats and plenty of wind from the NW as usual. That’s your ration this day. Amount of rainfall yesterday 5.3 mm.

06 March:  The Only bit of action today was on Dominic’s mobile phone and for  good reason it was his 46th Birthday and going by all accounts the party is in full swing in the back of the Lobster and just for the record that’s not false news!! Now for today’s fishing facts, there were 3 boats out manipulating in a fresh to strong and gusty NW wind with heavy showers and sadly there were no reports of any rod benders. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 3.9mm.

07 March:  There were five boats manipulating Lough Currane today with their flies and Lures at the ready, but I can say without any fear of contradiction today’s selection has a lot to be desired. Just for the record, Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 5 Kelts to his boat and all returned safe and sound. Wind SE then veered SW with rain for the majority of the day, amount of rainfall yesterday 8.3mm.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Waterford Fly Fishing Club held its Carrigavantry Cup and Nadine Caner Battle fundraiser on Saturday. The lake fished really well despite the cold conditions and northerly winds, and some big catches were recorded. In total there were 23 anglers competing for the top spot and between them they caught 176 trout. The biggest fish landed on the day was a brown of 57cm. It is a testament to these anglers care and attention to correct Catch and Release methods that there were no casualties amongst the fish.

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore.  The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!

Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.

New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

Tough conditions restrict kayak angling in southwest

Thought the fog had gone!
Thought the fog had gone!

Tough conditions (and the Angling Show) in February restricted the number of trips for members of the Irish Kayak Angling Club with Catch Reports submitted for only 2 sea fishing outings.

Irish Kayak Angling Club Stall at the Angling Show

Pat Gill & Ian found shelter at Blind Strand, south of Courtmacsherry, Co. Cork on 5th February.  Fishing was very poor, with the water murky due to the wind and rain in the

previous days.  Nevertheless small whiting, a conger and a thronback ray were landed.

Donal Harrington & Tim O’Herlihy launched in calmer conditions at Roches Point, Cork Harbour on 18th February.

Better to wait!
Better to wait!

Fog, which appeared to be clearing at 11am, returned forcing the anglers to retreat to shallow water close to shore for the first half of the day.  While waiting for the fog to clear, plagued by red shore crabs, dogfish, whiting and a solitary mackerel were landed with a single flatfish lost at the side of the kayak.

Once the fog had cleared drifting over the Habour Rock and outside the Point resulted in a handful of small coalfish and some reasonable whiting.

Anglers’ Preferences for Fishing Site Attributes

Fisheries Research
Fisheries Research

The ESRI would like to draw your attention to a Research Bulletin and corresponding journal article which are published on the Institute’s website.

Extract…
Fishery managers seek to create a high quality fishing experience for anglers. What constitutes ‘high quality’ is likely to vary across anglers but is affected by the attributes of, and services available, at fishing sites. For instance, factors such as fishing bank access, fishing guides (ghillies), parking, boating, accommodation, tackle shops, water quality, amongst others, as well as fish stocks and catch rates all can affect an angler’s enjoyment from a fishing trip. Fishery managers have good data on fishing site attributes but only anecdotal information about anglers’ preferences for such attributes and their relative importance. Knowing which fishing site attributes have the most relevance for anglers is valuable information for fishery managers seeking to improve angler satisfaction. Given an angler’s choice of fishing location, this research investigates the relative importance of site attributes in decisions on angling trip duration, that is, which site attributes are associated with fishing trips of longer duration. Such information is beneficial to those seeking to increase the economic benefit of angling as a tourism attraction…
