New research reveals new information about sea trout in Irish Sea set to inform conservation management

Inland Fisheries Ireland launches Celtic Sea Trout Project Report following Irish-Welsh Collaboration

Friday, 27th of January 2017: Inland Fisheries Ireland has published a new report called The Celtic Sea Trout Project (CSTP) which addresses significant knowledge gaps around sea trout. This migratory trout has a significant fisheries value however some sea trout fisheries in parts of Ireland and the UK bordering the Irish Sea are suffering decline.

The project, which consisted of a multi-agency partnership investigation into sea trout stocks and fisheries of rivers entering the Irish Sea, aimed to address the knowledge gaps, and identify the causes of decline with a view to supporting potential management solutions. Current understanding suggests that the incidence of sea trout and the composition and status of their stocks is sensitive to changes in the environments in which they live. These life history features and the sea trout’s widespread occurrence, make it a unique and potentially sensitive indicator of environmental change.

The structure of the Irish Sea and the variety of rivers draining to it, ranging from the mountainous rivers of West Wales to the lowland rivers of East Ireland, meant there was a wide range of marine and freshwater environments for the study. Funded under the INTERREG IVA Ireland Wales Programme, the Celtic Sea Trout Project was the first project in Ireland and the UK to combine a variety of disciplines in the study of sea trout and their fisheries on a large scale.

Dr Willie Roche, Senior Research Officer at Inland Fisheries Ireland, Minister Sean Kyne T.D. and Dr Cathal Gallagher, Head of Research and Development at Inland Fisheries Ireland at the launch of the Celtic Sea Trout Report.

Sean Kyne TD, Minister with responsibility for Inland Fisheries said, “I particularly welcome this report and the exemplary collaboration between Irish researchers at Inland Fisheries Ireland and other bodies and their international counterparts.  The research has resulted in a better understanding of the Sea Trout stocks in the Irish and Celtic seas and this will underpin logical and well-informed decisions on the management requirements that are needed to safeguard these stocks into the future and to ensure the maximum social and economic contribution is secured”.

Dr Cathal Gallagher, Head of Research at Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “This is a ground-breaking multi-agency partnership investigation which aims to fill some of the information gaps around sea trout conservation. The first study of its kind, the Celtic Sea Trout Project is a wide-scale comprehensive, cross-disciplinary project which has provided valuable insight into many important research needs in this area, which were first identified at the International Symposium on Sea Trout in 2004. Its primary purpose of improving understanding of sea trout stocks in order to support better management in the freshwater and marine environments has been achieved.”

The research will improve the management and long term future of sea trout in the Irish Sea by providing information and advice for management which can be translated into fishery and conservation benefits for countries bordering the Irish Sea. It has also established a wider awareness and long term network of people working to secure the future of sea trout.

Inland Fisheries Ireland put 188,000 person hours into Fisheries Protection in 2016

Huge effort invested into safeguarding resource contributing €836m to Irish economy every year

Inland Fisheries Ireland spent 188,404 person hours and carried out 31,180 patrols in 2016 to protect the fisheries resource, it was announced today at the launch of the Inland Fisheries Ireland Protection Review. The review highlights the results of recent protection work of the fisheries resource, which contributes €836 million to the Irish economy every year and supports 11,000 jobs.

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s programme saw fisheries officers patrol the entire resource which includes 74,000 kilometres of rivers and streams, 128,000 hectares of lakes and 5,500 kilometres of coastline in their attempts to apprehend those responsible for illegal fishing and environmental offences.

Some key findings from the Fisheries Protection 2016 Review include:

  • 103 prosecution cases initiated for breaches of fisheries and environmental legislation, regarded as one of the most important tools in the prevention of illegal fishing activities in the long term.
  • 1,487 items of illegal fishing equipment seized, including 301 illegal fishing nets which measured 14,782 metres in total, approximately the same distance it takes to travel from Leinster House on Kildare Street to Dublin Airport.
  • 22,066 environmental inspections across a variety of sites including farms, industrial premises, wastewater plants, forestry sites, wind farms as well general inspections for pollutants in the natural habitat. Inspections were carried out by environmental officers with a view to mitigating against potential environmental incidents which could have a detrimental impact on fish populations and fish habitats.
  • 36,979 inspections of recreational anglers carried out nationwide to ensure anglers were compliant with the fisheries acts, which aim to protect fish populations.

Sean Kyne TD, Minister with responsibility for Inland Fisheries, who opened Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Oireachtas Briefing Day event said, ”close to 200,000 man hours speaks for itself but I want to commend Inland Fisheries Ireland for the immense and dedicated efforts they have put into protecting our invaluable inland fisheries resource. The vast array of river, lake and coastal based habitats present huge logistical challenges for our front line protection staff and for Inland Fisheries Ireland Management.  These challenges are being met by augmenting traditional patrol and protection methods with state-of-the-art surveillance technologies and new and innovative patrol methods in the ever changing environment in which services are delivered.”

Dr Ciaran Byrne, CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “The role of Inland Fisheries Ireland is to act as steward of the inland fisheries resource and that role is crucial as we endeavour to protect and conserve Ireland’s aquatic habitat and the wild, indigenous fish populations who live within it. Our fisheries and environmental officers worked relentlessly in 2016 to ensure the continued availability of this resource to communities nationwide for recreational and business opportunities.

“The resource contributes €836 million to the Irish economy every year and in particular, it supports rural and peripheral communities through tourism opportunities which may not be there otherwise. Our National Strategy for Angling Development outlines how we can grow the economic contribution by an additional €96 million per year and our protection programme goes hand in hand in helping us realise those ambitions.”

The fisheries protection programme comprised planned day and night patrols, covert patrols and intelligence led surveillance operations and specifically targeted the fish species most at risk during particular seasons. The principle methods used for patrols were boats (1,151 patrols), kayaks (188 patrols) and personal water crafts (37 patrols) while land based patrols were carried out using quad bikes (84 patrols), bicycles (363 patrols) and by vehicles and foot (29,357 patrols). In addition to the use of traditional methods, fisheries officers used advanced surveillance equipment including night vision scopes, thermal imaging scopes and enhanced optical surveillance scopes to help them in their work.

Bavarian trout fly tempts Mullingar perch

Mick Flanagan’s friend, Heiko, from Bavaria in Germany was back over in Westmeath for a few days…

Heiko keeps a close eye on our angling reports, and when back in Ireland always drops into Brian Conlon in Wild Total Outdoors where he first got my contact details last season. On this trip Heiko wanted to do a day at the pike and perch. We had some mighty sport catching plenty of colorful perch. Heiko is also a keene fly angler, and told me he had some beautiful trout from the Mullingar stretch of the Brosna in 2016. We tried some of his eye catching river flies which he tied himself on the perch and they worked a treat. Some of his trout lure fries were very impressive looking, and some are on there way from Bavaria hopefully in time for the opening of the trout season here in the Shannon Region, which is March 1st.

Competition time as we drift into the 2017 season

The trout season kicks off on February 15th on the Western lakes and Hugh O’Donnell of Clonbur Angling Center is all fired up for opening day. Clonbur is situated in the narrow isthmus between Lough Corrib and Mask. Hugh is slap bang in the middle and runs the Lake Shore Holiday Homes on Lough Corrib, plus the Village Apartments in Clonbur Village, and has boats and Motors for hire on both lakes. Hugh has sponsored a weekend away in his Clonbur Village Apartment’s for one of our readers and angling pal. This competition will run into March as on March 1st the trout season will open right across the Country, and the winner will be announced end of March. Hugh can be contacted on 087-0537791. Check it out www.clonburanglingcentre.com.

Inny pike on a fly

Mick Flanagan was out on the River Inny with a client visiting from America who had some good pike on fly…

Jimmy Murray from Lanesbourough, who we featured from time to time, was back over from Queens in New York. Jimmy was just over for a few days for his daughter’s Graduation from college in Limerick, and managed to squeeze in a days fly-fishing for pike.

The River Inny has being dropping fast with the cold frosty spell of weather but we did manage to drift along towards Lough Iron. It was a tricky run getting back up river as when we hit some of the fast flowing stretches it was quite low, and there are some huge clay banks, and large rocks dotted across the river. Not to worry we motored on and also had 7 lovely pike on the day. The fish were in mint condition and Jimmy was very surprised with the power of the river pike in the fast current.

Great Results for the Irish Kayak Angling Club at Cork Harbour

Codling
Codling

On Sunday, 7 members of the Irish kayak Angling Club took advantage of the settled weather to launch at Roches Point and fish Cork Harbour.  The calm conditions and small tide allowed fishing the Harbour Rock and, with the lack of commercial traffic, drift fishing of the shipping channels.

Triple
Triple shot!

A small pod of 3 bottle nose dolphins kept the anglers company getting very close to some!  While Cod were caught on soft plastic lures, Sabiki rigs tipped with squid and mackerel yielded great results with double hook ups of Codling to 3lb and anglers landing multiple Whiting, Dabs and Pollack.

It was great to see the numbers of Codling as the Munster League, earlier in January, had only seen one in almost 3,000 fish.  There was the usual banter between good firends on the VHF as catches were announced.   Good sized Mackerel were also caught in surprising numbers for this time of year allowing a switch from frozen to fresh bait.

Codling
Codling

All anglers landed 3 or more species with 2 landing 7 each.  Species caught were Ballan Wrasse, Coalfish, Codling, Dab, Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Mackerel, Pollack, Poor Cod, Whiting and Scorpion fish.  A great result for January and, following on from similar species counts in November, shows that the harbour is fishing well.

On shore as backs were slapped, and stories were told where the fish that got away got bigger, we planned for our next trip.

Why I’m a sucker for perch, Irish Examiner

Why I’m a sucker for perch
Why I’m a sucker for perch

I’ve been an angler all my life and I’ve fished for a huge range of species in salt and fresh water. But at different times in my life I’ve been obsessed by different kinds of fish — for a while it was fly-fishing for trout, before that pollock fishing but recently I’ve become very fixated on perch. If you want to catch a particular species of fish it’s a good idea to learn as much about them as you can, so I’ve been studying perch…

Coalfish to 5lb for saltwater fly anglers on Cork Harbour

5lb coalfish
5lb coalfish on fly for Richie

It was great to see the amount of angling activity in Cork Harbour over the weekend. The Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan took a run out with some friends as conditions were perfect for chucking fluff. Calm weather and great water clarity held out good prospects , unusual for this time of year. Richie picks up the story…

“As we arrived at the mouth of the harbour I noticed great kayak activity,” Richie reports. It turns out that Irish Kayak Angling Club were having an outing, “great to see” the guide enthuses. A few nice pollack were landed on the fly-only winter outing aboard “Sea Hawk” but nothing spectacular. “Then we noticed a large shoal of fish under the boat,” Richie said. ” We couldn’t connect until Dr. Jacques came up with a tactic to lure this species on board. Experience counts, and the first coalfish of the session came on board. Over 100 fish were landed as Richie kept in contact with the huge shoal. Kevin Mc Loughlin had a team of flies up and was managing to hook up 3 fish at a time, even a huge mackerel at one stage.

Double coalfish for Kevin

Most of the coalfish were between 1-2 lbs weight but gave a great account of themselves on the fly rods. One gave the skipper a mighty fight, a 5 lber, his personal best for that species on the fly.

5lb coalfish

Richie has been given a challenge by Dr. Jacques we’ve been told; catch a Pollack on the fly in every month of the year. We’re not sure if this has ever been done before in Ireland. But the guide is almost there – he has only to catch a Pollack on the fly in February, so no pressure. The Doc is also on the chart for the challenge , but as Richie says, ” he has to work in February , I’m working at fishing, so no pressure Jacques ! ”
