Robsinsons little and large get an early start to fishing

Gary Robinson reports that a quick session with his young son last week provided some enjoyable sport before the weather drove them back indoors.Using just a set of small sabikis tipped off with tiny pieces of mackerel the father and son duo had some feisty blennies only moments after starting to fish.

Gary was out on his own at the weekend – this time from the kayak. Fishing a spot that he had not done well at but really like the feel of he was rewarded for his persistence and going with his gut instinct…

“I launched and with the way the tide and wind were setting up the drift I headed for the far side of the bay to drift back and fish baits over a sandy bottom in 14 to 16 metres of water. Out went the drogue and two rods with offerings of squid, peeler crab and mackerel strips. All I had to do was wait for the bites. There were none after an hour and a half and I was getting cold and frustrated.

Impatience got the better of me so I headed off to deeper water towards the mouth of the bay. The ground here was a little rougher so I dropped anchor and put the baits back down to the bottom to test my luck. I was well wrapped up but despite that it was cold! I had a spinning rod with me so I started to chuck a lure about just to keep myself moving and a little bit warmer. First cast and I was walloped by a pollock. Small but it warmed up a cold day.

Just as I had it unhooked the bait rod started to nod and it was a dogfish. I unhooked that and sent fresh bait to the bottom and had another cast of the lure rod. Another pollock followed. Then another dogfish. then another pollock, followed by another dogfish. This scenario played itself out for the next couple of hours with me hitting fish every cast and drop and managing to hook and land most of them. I can’t seem to get away from pollock and dogfish but on a day like today they were very welcome.”

Kayak angling in Ireland

Gary discovered the thrill, freedom and pure joy of kayak fishing almost by accident. After purchasing kayaks with the intention of paddling trips with his long-suffering partner, he started to assess the suitability of such a craft as a fishing platform. Some internet searches showed him that he was not alone in his thoughts. America and Australia already had blossoming populations of kayak anglers. Needing no more encouragement, he set about rigging his first sit on top kayak and transforming it into a fishing platform to gain access to some of the more inaccessible waters. .

Reports in from the various fisheries on the Munster Blackwater are that water levels are currently good. Heavy rain forecast for Kerry may bring the river up but the levels will will have plenty of times to sort themselves out for salmon angling next Wednesday. Some fresh fish have been seen lying in the river. It will be all down to the fishermen to get one out…

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery

Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

No sign of a fresh run salmon on the Laune

Fish on... but what will it bee. Unfortunately after the excitement another kelt to be safely released

Billy Downes reports from the River Laune in Kerry which open last week…

As of Wednesday 25th of January the Laune is at 1.3m, this is low for January.  The season is now open for nine days but no sign of a fresh fish so far.  Same is true for the rest of Ireland.  But lots of spents being met on all methods including the fly.  Kevin Walker on his second trip to the Laune as a member of the Association landed and safely returned a lovely 2016 fish on Beat 3. Danny Joy has met a good few fish spinning and on the fly but no fresh fish so far.  While the water level is at 1.3m there is no serious chance of a fresh fish There have been a good few sea trout caught also which is unusual.

No salmon as storm brews on Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports on the first week of the season on Lough Currane…

Wind ESE light with reasonable cloud cover, air temperature 7c felt like 5c
Saturday: Wind ESE light with reasonable cloud cover, air temperature 7c felt like 5c

18 Jan – 24 Jan There have been a few boats manipulating but no reports of any real action except for the odd Kelt being caught and talking of Kelts, if you catch one I would appreciate it if you would report to me and remember to put your Kelts catches down in your log book.  Not all the kelts are salmon,  one was an 8lb sea trout kelt that went back safely and hopefully will return again to give sport and spawn once more.

25/1/17 Anglers were not manipulating their flies or lures this day and for good reason, all fishing  stations were at a standstill , reason being there was a strong Southerly gale wind blowing across the lakes with gusts up to 100 kilometres and just for the record Kerry is on a yellow alert until tomorrow and heavy rain for the SW and talking of rain the amount of rainfall yesterday there  was 9.7mm. Tomorrow’s  forecast  isn’t much better.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Nice cod and other species out of Courtmacsherry

Mark Gannon, skipper at Courtmacsherry Angling,  reports that while fishing was slower over the weekend, good conditions allowed them to get out and target some bigger fish, with some good bull huss, cod, ling, coalfish and pollack boated. Inshore there is some good flounder fishing and a few bass are still showing up, with peeler crab the preferred method.

Irish Angling Update 19 January 2017

The sea trout are most definitely on sand eels
The sea trout are most definitely on sand eels

After the brief cold snap of late last week, this week has seen a return to much milder conditions, with temperatures up to 12C at times. Unseasonably mild for January, and it saw fish on the feed in many fisheries.

Pike anglers had some great sport, with the Dublin Pike Anglers enjoying a day out in Roscommon, and two 20lbs+ pike caught in a Tullamore & District Anglers competition. The Shannon in Co. Roscommon has also been producing some good pike recently, with a 21lbs 7oz fish winning the recent Camlin Anglers competition for local man Joe McDermott. Pike were sulking on Lough Ennell, according to Mick Flanagan, but the perch provided alternative sport, while a change of venue to Lough Derravaragh saw Mick land a cracking pike not far short of 30lbs, our Catch of the Week!

The River Suck is producing good roach fishing at the moment, with the new match stretch at Emlagh providing good fishing for the Sensas Connacht match last Sunday. Good numbers of small roach kept anglers busy for the four hour competition.

The salmon season has opened on Lough Currane, in the beautiful County Kerry. Calm settled conditions for the opening day proved a hindrance to angling, and the 9 boats who ventured out failed to encounter any fresh salmon, although one or two kelts were recorded. We look forward to Vincent Appleby’s “No spin, no fly, just facts” regular updates throughout the season. Meanwhile, Shane Gallagher reports that while fresh salmon were seen this week, anglers have not yet managed to tempt one to the bank, although a number of kelts were caught. Water conditions are excellent, with water level just below 0.6 on the gauge.

Cork Harbour and surrounding area is providing good sea angling sport at the moment, with literally thousands of whiting and dab caught in the Munster League competition held last Sunday. 13 species were caught in the competition, won by Pat Condon with an incredible 135 fish. Small boat fishing is also worth braving the cold, as Krzysztof Walczak and Robert Dyjasek discovered last week, small plastics providing them with excellent sport including pollack to 5kgs, as well as good coalfish and ling. Nearby, Mick Dennehy of Kinsale Charters reports unusual numbers of mackerel for so early in the year. Mick has also been catching good numbers of haddock and hake over the last week. Further west, Mark Gannon reported good bull huss, cod, ling, coalfish and pollack over the weekend, with good flounder fishing and still a few bass inshore taking peeler crab.

Further afield, the very active Killybegs SAC have been on the beaches, where sea trout have been feeding hard on sandeel and providing good sport, as well as coalfish and flounder. The mild conditions are definitely more conducive to shore fishing, but wrap up warm regardless! Anglers in Galway who are interested in taking up sea angling might do well to head along to Silverstrand beach this evening (19th, 7.30p.m.) where Galway Bay SAC are holding an introductory meet to show anglers the basics of shore fishing.

The forecast for the rest of the week is settled weather up to and including the weekend, colder than the last few days with night frosts, but changing to a more southwesterly airflow with rain in the early days of next week. SW winds will kick up the surf on the west coast beaches, which could provide great conditions for shore fishing next week.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.
