Lindsey Clarke reports on the fishing on the Drowes last week…

Spring seemed to arrive with a vengeance this week bringing dry and bright sunny weather. The river fell slightly over the week, as expected, and is now reading just over 0.5 metres on the gauge. The fishing was a little on the tough side under the bright sun but a number of rods did fair well. On Tuesday, Billy Grimes recorded a 7lb salmon caught on prawn from the Old Sea Pool and Kevin Burke accounted for a 10lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Black Hole. On Wednesday, Paul McCausland registered a 5½lb grilse caught on worm from the Island Pool and Billy Grimes reported a further salmon caught which weighed 8lb and fell to worm at Foggan’s Bushes. On Thursday, Brain McEvoy caught and released a 6lb grilse on a spinner from the Island Pool.

On Saturday, Pauric Deeney recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from The Blackwater and Justine Mannion accounted for a 7lb salmon caught on worm from The Blackwater.

The forecast for the coming week is for more unsettled weather. The duller conditions will suit angling and there may be enough rain to top the river up though present levels are good anyway.
